BACKGROUND: Various treatment modalities are available for management of melasma, ranging from topical and oral to chemical peeling, but none is promising alone. Very few studies are available regarding efficacy of combination of topical treatment with chemical peeling. Icarapin is a bee venom protein found to induce IgE-mediated allergic reaction. In this study, icarapin of Asian honey bee was cloned and sequenced. By in silico screening, S198 was found to be the potential antigenic site. This site was changed to cysteine and coupled with PEG5K. Compared to the wild type icarapin and the S198C variant, PEGylated S198C variant induced lower level of IgG and IgE antibodies in mice, showing that it is indeed located in an antigenic site. Our work may be generalized to other proteins for the discovery of antigenic sites and the reduction of antigenicity.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent thoracotomies regardless of the cause are not a rare occurrence. However, each thoracotomy results in adhesion to some extent. This adhesions increase morbidity and mortality presents a significant inconvenience for surgeons and prolongs the length of operations.

A 62-year-old man, with a 20-year history of seborrhoeic dermatitis, presented with a worsening of his dermatitis. He had previously been demonstrated to be allergic to various topical corticosteroids, so he had been using an emollient cream (Sebclair), containing piroctone olamine and various anti-inflammatory substances, for 6 months, with good effect. To elucidate whether EGEE has any effect on sperm motion, especially in the case of short time exposure, we conducted a series of in vivo experiments with rats, as well as an in vitro study with rat sperm. The effects of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGEE) on testicular cell populations in rats were investigated by a flow cytometric method. Rats were administered by gavage with EGEE at the various doses of 0 (saline alone), 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks. BACKGROUND: The diagnostic approach to eyelid eczema is often a great problem in daily practice.
PATIENT AND METHOD: A 16-year old girl developed recurrent severe pruritic edema of the eyelids, followed by redness and scaling. The authors report a 57-year-old man who survived 18 days after swallowing an 8-oz. can of Sterno in a suicide attempt. Two days after ingestion, he developed confusion and acute renal failure requiring hemodialysis, followed on day 8 by a delayed but rapidly evolving ascending paralysis. Pathologic examination showed severe demyelination, with lesser axonal damage, of virtually all cranial and peripheral nerves sampled and sparing of central myelin. The diethylene glycol in the Sterno was considered responsible for this intoxication.
