[Disorders due to iodine deficiency].

1. An insufficient dietary supply of iodine results in the development of a variety of disorders of thyroid function and development of the fetus and young infants, grouped under the general heading of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, IDD. Endemic goiter constitutes the most spectacular disorder from the clinical and epidemiological point of view. However, the most serious consequence of iodine deficiency is the impact on neuro-intellectual development at a population level, varying from endemic mental retardation to the complete picture of endemic cretinism. 2. Considering that mental retardation

[Iodine prophylaxis in Poland in light of the WHO recommendation on reduction of the daily salt intake].

Iodine prophylaxis started in Poland in 1935, was suspended in periods of time 1939-1945 and 1980-1988. In 1991 Polish Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (PCCIDD) was established and epidemiological survey performed in 1992-1993, defined Poland as an area with moderated - at seaside part as light - severity of iodine deficiency. In 1996 the Minister of Health introduced disposition on obligatory iodization of household salt with 30+/-10 mg KJ/kg and neonates formula with 10 ug/100 ml. Additionally supplementation the pregnant and breast feeding women with daily dose of iodides

[Surgical therapy of benign thyroid gland diseases].

Operations due to benign thyroid diseases are one of the most common elective surgical procedures performed in Germany. In the majority of cases, the preoperative determination of the serum thyrotropin concentration and an ultrasound of the thyroid region are sufficient preoperative investigations. In cases of thyroid functional disorders a scintigram should be additionally performed. Indications for operation in nodular goiter are local, mechanical compression, suspicion of malignancy and focal or disseminated autonomy. In Graves' disease the indication for operation is usually recurrent hype

The status of iodine nutrition in newborn infants, schoolchildren, adolescents and adults in former East Germany.

In the former East Germany (GDR) like in the former West Germany (FRG) iodine deficiency and endemic goiter have been described since more than 2 decades. After a program of salt iodization which was started in East Germany in 1985 the urinary iodine excretion of the population increased significantly. The thyroid gland of the newborn is much more sensible to changes of the iodine supply than the thyroid of older children. A total of 1732 subjects was enrolled in the study. After the implementation of the mandatory salt iodization the goiter prevalence in newborns decreased markedly to less th

Effect of humic acids on thyroidal function.

Humic substances (HS) have been implicated as environmental goitrogens. Increased prevalence of goiter has been recently noticed in the blackfoot disease endemic area on the southwest coast of Taiwan, where well water is rich in HS. This study investigated the in vivo effects of humic acids (HA) on the thyroid gland of rats and mice. Groups of mice and rats were fed regular or moderately iodine deficient (approximately 167 vs 700 micrograms l- per kg) chow and distilled water or HA water (1mg/ml) for 3 or 4 months. Serum T4, T3, reverse T3, and/or TSH were measured by radioimmunoassay. Thyroid

Thyroid function studies in normal pregnant Tanzanian women.

Iodine deficiency is well known as a cause of several disorders such as endemic goiter and cretinism, along with a wide spectrum of psychoneurologic development disorders including endemic mental deficiency, which are generally correlated with damage to the fetus. Since as much as 40% of the Tanzanian population is at risk for iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) because they live in iodine-deficient areas, and although the effects of iodine deficiency on human reproduction in Tanzania have not been objectively studied, it is estimated that there are approximately 600,000 cretins and cretinoids i

Need for neonatal screening program in India: A national priority.

In India, out of 342 districts surveyed, 286 have been identified as endemic to iodine deficiency (ID). Research studies conducted in school age children (SAC), Adolescent girls, Pregnant Mothers (PMs) and Neonates have documented poor iodine nutritional status. As observed by total goiter rate of more than 5% and median urinary iodine concentration level of <100 μg/l in SAC and <150 μg/l in PMs as prescribed cutoff of World Health Organization. And higher thyroid stimulating hormone levels among neonates. ID leads to compromised mental development and hence which remain hidden and not visible

Endemic goitre--iodine deficiency disorders.

Endemic goitre occurs when the prevalence of thyroid enlargement in the population of an area exceeds 10%. With few exceptions its cause is iodine deficiency superimposed on other goitrogenic factors normally present and responsible for sporadic goitre. Iodine deficiency causes significant health problems and so, the term iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) has been introduced. The earliest sign of IDD is goitre, but these disorders also include cretinism, neonatal hypothyroidism and congenital defects, as well as retardation of mental and physical development etc. IDD are a worldwide problem: W

DISGUISED THYROID DISORDERS.

In six cases of hyperthyroidism and two of chronic thyroiditis herein described, the initial features of the diseases were misinterpreted as attributable to other kinds of illness such as myocardial infarction, gastrointestinal malignant disease, malabsorption syndrome, psychosis, simple exophthalmos and endemic goiter. The characteristic signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism (in six patients) and chronic thyroiditis (in two patients) were present at the outset but were not identified. Intensive questioning and alertness were required to elicit these characteristics. The symptoms improved or d

Evaluation of iodine, iron, and selenium in biological samples of thyroid mother and their newly born babies.

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating facts that the metabolism of essential trace elements is altered in thyroid patients. AIM: The aim of present study was to compare the status of essential trace elements, iodine, iron (Fe), and selenium (Se) in biological samples (serum and urine) of goitrous mothers (age ranged 30-40) and their newly born infants (n=76). An age matched 68 non-goitrous mothers and their infants, residing in the same locality, were selected as referents. For a comparative study, the biological samples of non-goitrous and goitrous pregnant and non pregnant female subjects of th

Prevalence of goiter in schoolchildren--a study on the influence of adequate iodine prophylaxis in Poland.

Poland has been known as an area with iodine deficiency. Surveys carried out in 1992/1993 and 1994 revealed that the voluntary model of iodine prophylaxis introduced in 1986 was ineffective. In 1997 a new model of iodine prophylaxis based on obligatory household salt iodization has been implemented. In order to assess its effectiveness new studies were undertaken in 1999-2001. The study involved 1471 school-children aged 6-15 years from 12 sites. In every subject thyroid volume by means of ultrasound and urinary iodine concentration were assessed. The results were compared with data obtained f

An epidemic of hyperthyroidism following salt iodination in Lebanon.

Salt iodination, in Lebanon, started partially in late 1992, and was implemented in a uniform manner by January 1995. Following salt iodination, an epidemic of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis occurred, as noted by the author, in his private clinic. The number of thyrotoxic patients increased sharply by 2 to 6 folds, and the yearly incidence rose from a baseline of 0.02% up to 0.07%. The younger patients have predominantly Graves' disease (32% of the cases), while 17% have solitary thyroid nodules, and 44% of the cases were elderly subjects with multinodular goiter. The pathogenesis and possible
