When Subtle Neurologic Changes Speak: A Reflective Narrative of Central Cord Syndrome After Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion.

This reflective narrative explores the lived experience of developing central cord syndrome (CCS) following a postoperative spinal epidural hematoma after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion and examines implications for holistic nursing practice and education. Grounded in Watson's Theory of Human Caring, this reflective narrative examines lived experience through a caring science lens. Findings indicate that early postoperative neurologic symptoms were initially minimized, contributing to delayed escalation and emergent surgical intervention for hematoma evacuation. The subsequent course

As health-related research on children shifts from seeking information about children to seeking information directly from them, researchers … n the United Kingdom and the United States. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used within a grounded theory approach and included drawing to accompany the traditional grounded theory methods of interview and observation. Findings indicate that children, regardless of their ethnicity and other cultural components, respond to the childhood cancer experience …

A descriptive and exploratory pilot study into school re-entrance for adolescents who have received treatment for cancer.

The purpose of this exploratory and descriptive pilot study was to explore the process of school re-entrance for adolescents receiving outpatient treatment for cancers, using grounded theory. All adolescents who had received a minimum of 3 weeks' hospital-based schooling, but had since returned to their own schools, and were booked for an outpatient appointment on a paediatric oncology unit during a specified 2-week period, took part in an audio-tape-recorded, semi-structured interview. The sample consisted of five such adolescents. Data were analysed using the constant comparison method of gr…

A Qualitative Study Into the Relative Stigmatization of Mental Illness by Mental Health Professionals.

Mental health professionals stigmatize mental illness, which has significant ramifications for public health and policy. Within this domain, there is a lack of comprehensive research on relative stigma, emotions, and behaviors and an absence of literature that can guide research on these topics. The current study sought to address these limitations. Unstructured interviews were conducted with 22 mental health professionals, and data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. The current study identified a collection of mental disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder), stereotypes …

Family consequences of refugee trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To construct a model on the consequences of political violence for refugee families based upon a qualitative investigation. Healing from incest: resurrecting the buried self.

Writers on the incest experience estimate conservatively that 10% to 30% of all girls and 30% of all boys have had at least one childhood experience of incest. Incest is emotionally devastating to a child as it involves betrayal, and the irretrievable loss of trust in the adults in the child's life. Little is written about the healing processes of incest survivors. The purpose of this study was to generate a substantive grounded theory that provides an explanatory schema for understanding the healing process of adult female incest survivors. The sample consisted of 10 adult women who had a his…

Mapping a psychosocial syndemic among methamphetamine-using sexual minority men living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: While research with sexual minority men (SMM) has focused on disparities related to HIV, substance use and mental health, synergistic psychosocial pathways driving these epidemics remain underexplored. We used syndemic theory to assess how psychosocial factors sustain methamphetamine use and hinder recovery efforts for SMM living with HIV. METHODS: A triangulation of network analyses and constructivist grounded theory approaches is utilised to elucidate pathways through which psychosocial factors influence methamphetamine use among this population. Survey data (N = 129) are used…

Disclosing sexuality: Gay and bisexual men's experiences of coming out, forced out, going back in and staying out of the 'closet' in prison.

Many papers have been written on the process of coming out by individuals with predominantly same-sex sexual orientation but few of these papers have explored the concept of how people negotiate the idea of coming out in prison. We conducted in-depth interviews with 13 prisoners and one ex-prisoner in New South Wales, Australia, who self-identified as gay, homosexual or bisexual men. Data was collected and analysed using an inductive or grounded theory framework since very little was known on the sexual behaviours and identities of Australian prisoners prior to the study and elsewhere. We exam…

Epigenetics, Structural Determinants, and Race: An Integrated Conceptual Framework for Embodied Stress, Resilience, and Black Women's Cardiometabolic Health.

By integrating epigenetic science using a multidisciplinary approach, grounded in nursing theory, this concept paper offers a transformative frontier for understanding and addressing cardiometabolic health inequities experienced by Black women. Building on the legacy and insights of the Black Women's Health Study and drawing on the Social Ecological Model, the Neuman Systems Model, and the weathering hypothesis, we present a conceptual framework that elucidates how systemic drivers of health shape cardiometabolic health outcomes through psychosocial pathways that mediate epigenetic changes. Echoes of Trauma: Experiential Insights into Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Psychotherapists.

Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) presents considerable emotional and psychological hazards to psychotherapists continually exposed to clients' trauma histories. While quantitative research has demonstrated an overlap between STS and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), qualitative studies have not explicitly examined the extent to which psychotherapists' lived accounts align with the four PTSD clusters delineated in DSM-5. Using constructivist grounded theory and in-depth interviews with 16 psychotherapists from diverse clinical settings, this study found that therapists' experiences mirrore…

Finding the Sweet Spot: Exploring Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction, Burnout and Resilience.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) report concerning levels of burnout that can negatively impact patient outcomes and job turnover. Little is known about how NPs effectively navigate their practice and mitigate worklife stressors. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, this study explored this gap by investigating burnout, job satisfaction and resilience among 10 hospital-based NPs. Data analysis revealed three key themes: (1) making a difference … keeps me going; (2) finding the sweet spot; and (3) being the safety net.
