Effect of preceding home-visit nursing on time to discharge in hospitalization for the treatment of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia among patients with limited familial care.

BACKGROUND: During hospitalization for behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), it is imperative to build a support system for each patient in the community for after they obtain symptom remission. To this end, patients lacking adequate family support are less likely to be discharged to their own homes and need stronger support systems to be established. This study therefore investigated the effects of home-visit nursing before admission on time to home discharge among patients with limited familial care who were hospitalized for treatment of BPSD. METHODS: A single-centre c

Responses of schoolchildren with asthma to recommendations to reduce desert dust exposure: Results from the LIFE-MEDEA intervention project using wearable technology.

Current public health recommendations for desert dust storms (DDS) events focus on vulnerable population groups, such as children with asthma, and include advice to stay indoors and limit outdoor physical activity. To date, no scientific evidence exists on the efficacy of these recommendations in reducing DDS exposure. We aimed to objectively assess the behavioral responses of children with asthma to recommendations for reduction of DDS exposure. In two heavily affected by DDS Mediterranean regions (Cyprus & Crete, Greece), schoolchildren with asthma (6-11 years) were recruited from primary sc

The emotional experiences of family carers in Huntington disease.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study conducted to examine the emotional experience of caregiving by family carers of people with Huntington disease and to describe strategies they used to deal with that experience. BACKGROUND: Huntington disease, commonly diagnosed in young to middle adulthood, is an inherited single gene disorder involving loss of cognitive, motor and neuropsychiatric function. Many family members become caregivers as well as continuing as parents and wage earners. The emotional aspects of caregiving contribute to mental health risks for family members. METHODS: Focus gro

Multidrug and Mupirocin Resistance in Environmental Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Isolates from Homes of People Diagnosed with Community-Onset MRSA Infection.

Patients with community-onset (CO) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections contribute to MRSA contamination of the home environment and may be reexposed to MRSA strains from this reservoir. This study evaluates One Health risk factors, which focus on the relationship between humans, animals, and the environment, for the increased prevalence of multiple antimicrobial-resistant MRSA isolates in the home environment. During a trial of patients with CO-MRSA infection, MRSA was isolated from the household environment at the baseline and 3 months later, following randomization

Home care nurses' ethical compass in palliative decision-making processes.

This study explored home care nurses' experiences with shared decision-making regarding treatment and care for home-dwelling patients in the palliative phase, focusing on their perceptions of their role. An exploratory qualitative design was used to conduct and interpret four focus group interviews with 24 home care nurses from four municipalities, guided by Gadamer's hermeneutics. Two themes emerged: (1) Being captured between guidelines and personal values, highlighting the importance of covering one's back and the challenges of addressing a patient's ambivalence in decisions about life and

The Oley Foundation and Consumer Support Groups.

Patients with intestinal failure (IF) often require home parenteral and/or enteral nutrition (HPEN). There are many complications associated with both IF and the use of HPEN, including infection and intolerance. Psychosocial effects, such as depression, isolation, fatigue, anxiety, financial stress, are also associated with IF and HPEN and can be difficult to address. Support groups offer patients and caregivers the opportunity to talk to and learn from others who have had similar experiences. The Oley Foundation, a nonprofit organization for HPEN consumers, caregivers, and clinicians, fulfill

Reported communication abilities of individuals with severe mental retardation.

Little is known about the distribution of communication skills among individuals with severe mental retardation. The present study was designed to obtain basic descriptive information about the reported expressive communication status and other associated sensory and behavioral characteristics of four representative samples of this overall population. These samples include both children and adults and individuals living in large residential facilities as well as those living at home or in smaller, more natural community environments. Results of this study, based on completed questionnaires for

Halogenated flame-retardant concentrations in settled dust, respirable and inhalable particulates and polyurethane foam at gymnastic training facilities and residences.

Halogenated flame-retardants (FRs) are used in a wide array of polymer-containing products. Animal studies and structure-activity modeling exercises suggest that FR exposure may result in detrimental toxicological effects. Workers with extended contact with such polymers (e.g., electronic dismantlers, carpet installers and aircraft personnel) have previously been observed to exhibit elevated body burdens of FRs, e.g., polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Recently, elevated PBDE blood levels were also reported in a non-occupational exposure group, gymnasts. These levels were hypothesized to

Negative prompts aimed at maintaining eating independence.

BACKGROUND: Psychological abuse of older people is difficult to recognise; specifically, nursing home residents have been documented to be at higher risk of psychological abuse during daily care, such as during feeding. Healthcare professionals adopt positive and negative verbal prompts to maintain residents' eating independence; however, negative prompts' purposes and implications have never been discussed to date. RESEARCH AIMS: To critically analyse negative verbal prompts given during mealtimes as forms of abuse of older individuals and violation of ethical principles. RESEARCH DESIGN: T

Child Protection Investigations in Out-of-Home Care: Perpetrators, Victims, and Contexts.

Keeping children safe in out-of-home care requires an understanding of the contexts under which maltreatment occurs. This study examines how maltreatment investigations differ across four settings (nonrelative foster, informal kinship, formal kinship, and congregate care). I focus on four elements of maltreatment: the perpetrator's role (e.g., out-of-home caregiver and peer), maltreatment type, probability of substantiation, and victim characteristics. I use statewide Wisconsin administrative data in years 2005-2012, which has an analytic sample of over 96,000 placements. Data are analyzed usi

The clinical and social dimensions of prescribing palliative home oxygen for refractory dyspnea.

BACKGROUND: Chronic breathlessness is a significant problem in palliative care and oxygen is often prescribed in an attempt to ameliorate it. Often, this prescription falls outside the current funding guidelines for long-term home oxygen use. The aim of this qualitative study was to understand the factors that most influence Australian specialist palliative care nurses' initiation of home oxygen for their patients. METHODS: A series of focus groups were held across three states in Australia in 2011 involving specialist palliative care nurses. The invitation to the nurses was sent by e-mail th

Folie à deux and mental retardation: review and case report.

Despite the known association of folie à deux with low intelligence, very few reports of its occurrence in people with documented mental retardation have been published. A case of folie à deux in a 32 year old man with moderate mental retardation is described and the clinical implications discussed. The need for an increased awareness of the existence of mental illness in the mentally handicapped is also emphasized.
