BACKGROUND: The histology of benign disease of the human prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is heterogeneous. No other species demonstrates the same complexity, and current animal models do not appear to fully encompass the stromal and epithelial developmental changes involved in the human disease. This study describes age-related changes in the prostatic smooth muscle stroma of guinea pigs and humans, which may be pertinent to some aspects of the disease process in humans.

Dietary copper-deficient guinea pig dams (0.8 microgram Cu/g diet) were administered oxytocin to induce delivery of pups, whereas dietary copper-sufficient guinea pig dams (5.8 micrograms Cu/g diet) had uneventful deliveries with 79% surviving pups. Seven of 83 female guinea-pigs were found to have reproductive tract leiomyomas at necropsy. Sixty-three of these guinea-pigs also had cystic rete ovarii. Eleven separate leiomyomas were identified, the most common site of formation being the uterine body or horn. Hartley guinea pigs infected with guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GP-CMV) develop a mononucleosis syndrome during primary infection that is similar to that seen in immunocompetent humans. The first confirmation of chikungunya virus infection in Guinea is reported in the present study. The patient, a 68-year-old woman presumptively diagnosed with malaria and with no history of travel, was identified through a research project focused on the etiologies of febrile illnesses in Guinea. A whole-blood sample from the patient was analyzed using multiplex reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, yielding a positive result for chikungunya virus, and was subsequently sequenced. The unprecedented character of the 2013-2016 epidemic of Ebola in West Africa paved the way for a wave of investigations into the reservoir of the disease. A novel economy of health projects arose, which employed Guinean professionals to sample animals and fortify a hypothesis: that the disease spilled over from a bat. Through exploring virology research and its dangers in post-Ebola Guinea, I argue that the hypothesis of a bat reservoir has taken on a heuristic role that can be compared to the way that a fetish polarizes relations between the people who manipulate and fear this idea.
