Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) are oncogenic retroviruses linked etiologically to human diseases. In Chile, these viruses have been studied in ethnic populations, or patients diagnosed clinically with HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis, but have not been studied in patients with malignant hematological diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and viral prevalence of HTLV-1/2 among patients with malignant hematological diseases. Eighty-eight patients with malignant hematological diseases were tested by enzyme-linked immu

Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) is a retrovirus with two subtypes, HTLV-1 and HTLV-2. HTLV-1 is linked to severe diseases such as adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and HTLV-associated myelopathy, while HTLV-2 is considered less pathogenic but can cause fibromyalgia, hairy cell leukemia, and neurological disorders. Although HTLV-2 is less prevalent than HTLV-1, it is common in specific populations, such as indigenous groups and injection drug users. In Brazil, an estimated 200,000-250,000 people are infected with HTLV-2, mostly in the North, yet data on its prevalence in pregnant women re

BACKGROUND: Millions of lives around the world are being saved annually through blood transfusion. However, blood transfusion is among the essential vehicles for transmitting infections. The overall prevalence of Transfusion Transmissible Infections among blood donors differs around the world, reflecting the variation in the prevalence of these infections. This study aims to assess the prevalence and trends of Transfusion Transmissible Infections among blood donors in Qatar.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study utilizing donation records of 5 years from January 2013 to December 2017. We i

BACKGROUND: Selection of voluntary donors who are at low risk of transfusion-transmissible viral infection (TTVI) is central in maintaining the safety of the blood supply. Evaluation of its effectiveness and the dynamics of the process may offer opportunities to further improve transfusion safety.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The impact of donor selection on prevalence of TTVI was analyzed in all allogeneic donations in Australia between July 2000 and June 2006 by interviewing donors found to have a TTVI. The presence and disclosure of infective risks was reassessed.
RESULTS: A total of 6.3 mil

Blood donations are routinely screened by multiple serologic assays for antigens/antibodies associated with infection by blood-borne viruses, including hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1 and HIV-2), and human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-I and HTLV-II). A direct detection of these viruses would be more effective for the prevention of transfusion-transmitted infections than the indirect measurement of the variable host immune response to these agents. Because the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for viral gene amplification offers the most

BACKGROUND: Viral contamination of platelet (PLT) concentrates can result in transfusion-transmitted diseases. A photochemical treatment (PCT) process with amotosalen-HCl and long-wavelength ultraviolet light (UVA), which cross-links nucleic acids, was developed to inactivate viruses and other pathogens in PLT concentrates.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: High titers of pathogenic or blood-borne viruses, representing 10 different families, were added to single-donor PLT concentrates containing 3.0 x 10(11) to 6.0 x 10(11) PLTs in approximately 300 mL of 35 percent plasma and 65 percent PLT additive

We report the case of a middle-aged man who presented de novo with abdominal pain and hepatomegaly and was found to have positive serology for hepatitis C and subsequently a primary hepatic lymphoma. An increased incidence of primary hepatocellular cancer is well characterized in both cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic cases of chronic hepatitis C. The relationship between chronic hepatitis C and primary hepatic lymphoma remains obscure. It has been established that hepatitis C can sustain the clonal B-cell expansion that occurs in associated cryoglobulinaemia, and hepatitis C RNA has been detected w

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) cells express TNF receptor type-2 (TNFR2) on their surface and shed its soluble form (sTNFR2). We previously reported that sTNFR2 levels were highly elevated in the plasma of patients with acute ATL. To investigate whether its quantitation would be helpful for the diagnosis or prediction of the onset of acute ATL, we examined the plasma levels of sTNFR2 in a large number of specimens obtained from a cohort of ATL patients and asymptomatic human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) carriers (ACs) and compared them to those of other candidate ATL biomarkers

INTRODUCTION: Human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is endemic in the Caribbean, Japan, South America and regions of Africa. HTLV-2 is present in Native American populations and associated with IV drug use in Europe and North America. In Brazil, it is estimated that 1.5 million people are infected with HTLV-1/2. The study objective was to determine HTLV-1/2 prevalence in pregnant women in the prenatal care from three public services in São Luis, State of Maranhão, Brazil, and to counsel seropositive women to reduce viral transmission.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted f

In France, the screening for human T-cell leukemia/ lymphoma virus type 1 and 2 (HTLV-1 and HTLV-2) during the donation of human milk has been carried out from 1992 with the application of the circular DGS 24 November 1992. The screening for antibodies against these viruses is regulated and done systematically during every donation of milk. Breast feeding being the main mode of transmission of the HTLV-1, the last ministerial decree of 25 August 2010 has made the screening test compulsory for the anonymous donation and for the personalized donation (of a mother for her own child) from all wome

Infection of cytomegalovirus (CMV) via contaminated blood may endanger immunocompromised patients that require transfusion therapy. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of CMV antibodies in the blood donor population in Southern-central Taiwan. A total of 1800 consecutive sera, obtained from Tainan Blood Center of Chinese Blood Services Foundation (CBSF), were tested for CMV antibodies by two commercial enzyme immunoassays (EIAs). Of the sera tested, 150 (8.3%) were found to be CMV seronegative. The frequency of CMV seropositivity revealed no significant difference between male

We report the clinical features and outcome of 16 patients with cryoglobulinaemia. Two patients with Type I cryoglobulinaemia both had IgG kappa monoclonal paraproteins. Nine of 10 with Type II disease had monoclonal IgM kappa and polyclonal IgG; one had monoclonal IgG kappa and polyclonal IgG in the cryoglobulin. Underlying disorders identified in 3 of the 4 Type III patients were Sjogren's syndrome, infective endocarditis, and non-A non-B hepatitis and HTLV III infection. The commonest presenting features were rash in 94 p. 100 (ulceration 25 p. 100), arthralgia in 63 p. 100 (erosive arthrit

The first description of the human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was made in 1980, followed closely by the discovery of HTLV-2, in 1982. Since then, the main characteristics of these viruses, commonly referred to as HTLV-1/2, have been thoroughly studied. Central and South America and the Caribbean are areas of high prevalence of HTLV-1 and HTVL-2 and have clusters of infected people. The major modes of transmission have been through sexual contact, blood, and mother to child via breast-feeding. HTLV-1 is associated with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), HTLV-associated myelopathy/t

Human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infects 15-20 millions individuals worldwide. This oncoretrovirus can be transmitted through 3 ways: horizontally, vertically (mother to child) and via blood transfusion. HTLV-1 causes 2 major diseases: adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1-associated myelopathy. Tax is a 40-kDa phosphoprotein that is encoded by the pX region of the virus. Several lines of evidence have demonstrated a central role for this protein in the immortalization or transformation of the HTLV-1 infected cells. Apart from its abi
