[Occupational stress and assessment of human resources in health: from assessment to the changing process].

Health professionals are at risk for occupational stress, as confirmed by diverse sources including the Italian legislative decree, D.L. 626/94, the Health Promoting Hospital of the World Health Organization, and the Ottawa Charter. The aim of this study was to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the principal sources of stress in the work environment and the resources, both individual and organizational, that health professionals feel they possess to cope with it. The instruments utilized for the first quantitative phase were: the Maslach Burn out Inventory, the Job Content Questionnaire

Ergonomic study on the manual component insertion lines for occupational health and safety improvements.

The study aimed at reducing the occupational health and safety problems faced by the manual component insertion operators. Subjective and objective assessments, and direct observations were made in the printed circuit assembly factory. Simple and low-cost ergonomic interventions were implemented, that is, repairing chairs, reducing high workloads, assigning operators to a maximum of 2 workstations, confining machines that emitted bad smell and much noise, and providing finger work aids. The results of the interventions were reductions in operators' work discomforts, that is, chair discomfort (

[Post-occupational exposure HIV infection in health workers: an update and preventive measures].

The author reviews the worldwide references concerning the problem of HIV infection in health care workers (HCW) after occupational exposure in its different aspects: infection risk rate (0.36-0.4%); common types of exposure (percutaneous, contact, and mucomembranous); main risk factors related to the lesion, the patient (donor) and HCW (receptor); and preventive attitude to be adopted. In what concerns prevention, the author emphasises the universal precautions (nosocomial infection prevention) and drug prophylaxis with anti retroviral drugs-reasons for administration, inclusion and exclusion

Occupation risk of needlestick injuries among health care personnel in Saudi Arabia.

In a four-year study of penetrating injuries potentially contaminated with blood among health care personnel, the majority of cases occurred amongst nurses (65%). The wards were the commonest place for injury to occur (39%) which questions whether difficult practical procedures should be performed there. Injuries occurred most commonly during the afternoons (63%). Although needles were the most frequent implement (79%) causing injury, very few cases (7%) were related to the re-sheathing of cannulae. The commonest injured area (46%) was the palmar surface of the distal forefinger of the non-dom

Occupational hazards to health care workers: diverse, ill-defined, and not fully appreciated.

Health care workers are challenged by an imposing group of occupational hazards. These hazards include exposure to ionizing radiation, stress, injury, infectious agents, and chemicals. The magnitude and diversity of these hazards are not fully appreciated. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic has created additional occupational hazards and has focused attention on the problem of occupational hazards to health care workers. Concern over the nosocomial transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus has contributed to efforts to implement universal infection control precautions and t

Occupational health and safety policies in Brazil and France: contradictions analysis for the development of prevention.

Despite advances in occupational health and safety (OHS) policies around the world, the problem of occupational accidents and diseases intensifies in various economic sectors, with cuts based on gender, race, income, and occupation. This paper aims to answer two research questions: What are the main contradictions for the development and implementation of OHS policies? What are the implications of overcoming these contradictions in an attempt to improve OHS policies? Based on two previous scoping reviews developed to identify historical contradictions for Brazil and France, we performed a qual

Beyond Radiation Exposure: Occupational Health Challenges Across the Modern Radiology Workforce.

Radiology occupational safety has historically centred on radiation protection. Although radiation safety remains essential, the digital transformation of imaging has expanded the occupational-health profile of the radiology workforce. Diagnostic radiologists now spend prolonged periods at PACS workstations; radiographers and reporting staff work in display-dependent environments; sonographers are exposed to sustained scanning postures and forceful transducer use; and interventional radiology teams face procedural ergonomic stressors related to standing posture, monitor position, table height,

Occupational exposure to antimony from cement additives: Speciation and health risk insights.

Antimony (Sb) is an emerging environmental contaminant of concern due to its persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity. Its trivalent form [Sb(III)] is of particular relevance, as it is classified as a suspected human carcinogen. In the cement industry, Sb-based additives are increasingly used to mitigate water-soluble hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], a highly toxic and allergenic compound. However, the environmental fate, chemical speciation, and occupational exposure to Sb during cement handling are still poorly characterized. This study developed and validated a robust analytical wo
