Beyond Surgical Repair: Psychosocial Recovery and Social Reintegration for Obstetric Fistula Survivors in Somalia.

Obstetric fistula is a preventable childbirth injury with profound physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences for women. In Somalia, fistula reflects delayed access to skilled childbirth care and emergency obstetric services, but its effects continue long after the clinical injury. Drawing on Somalia-specific evidence and relevant global literature, this commentary argues that fistula care should move beyond a procedure-centered model toward a survivor-centered continuum of psychosocial recovery and social reintegration. Surgical repair remains essential, yet recovery is incomp

OBJECTIVE: To identify the employment outcomes of greatest importance as defined by those with SCI who have worked since injury. METHODS: A qualitative approach was used with 6 focus groups at 2 sites (Minnesota and Georgia). Participants (N = 44) were a minimum of 10 years after injury and had been employed at some point after SCI. We identified participants through a 40-year longitudinal study

Exceptional Financial Support for Introduction of Inactivated Polio Vaccine in Middle-Income Countries.

In May 2012, the World Health Assembly declared the completion of poliovirus eradication a programmatic emergency for global public health and called for a comprehensive polio endgame strategy. The Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-2018 was developed in response to this call and demands that all countries using Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) only introduce at least 1 dose of Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) into routine immunization schedules by the end of 2015. In November 2013, the Board of Gavi (the Vaccine Alliance) approved the provision of support for IPV introduction in the 72

The assessment is aided by the triangulation, or combining of assessment methods and strategies. Measures used to assess the coalition's formation, implementation of community initiatives, and production of community impacts are described, along with the triangulation strategies used to enhance the assessment findings.

St. Louis enhancing engagement and retention (STEER) in HIV/AIDS care: a participatory intersectional needs assessment for intervention and implementation planning.

BACKGROUND: Missouri is one of seven priority states identified by the Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative, and St. Louis contains almost half of the people living with HIV (PLWH) in Missouri. As St. Louis has a marked history of structural racism and economic inequities, we utilized the Intersectionality Based Policy Analysis (IBPA) framework to guide a participatory needs assessment for planning and program development. METHODS: The planning team included researchers, the lead implementer from our community partner, and two community representatives, and had biweekly 60-90 min meetings for 1

Health outcomes of incarcerated pregnant women and their infants in a community-based program.

An experimental, community-based, residential program, focused on health promotion, was established in 1990 for incarcerated pregnant women with short-term sentences and histories of drug abuse in a large, midwestern metropolitan area in the United States. Infants resided with mothers after birth. Prenatal care, delivery, postpartum, and family-planning services were initiated and provided by a nurse-midwifery service. Community-based health care, job training, and drug rehabilitation were provided for women during pregnancy through the fourth postpartum month. Program participants' prenatal,

A novel application of process mapping in a criminal justice setting to examine implementation of peer support for veterans leaving incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Between 12,000 and 16,000 veterans leave incarceration every year, yet resources are limited for reentry support that helps veterans remain connected to VA and community health care and services after leaving incarceration. Homelessness and criminal justice recidivism may result when such follow-up and support are lacking. In order to determine where gaps exist in current reentry support efforts, we developed a novel methodological adaptation of process mapping (a visualization technique being increasingly used in health care to identify gaps in services and linkages) in the contex

Interpretation of China's Action Plan for Viral Hepatitis Prevention and Care (2025-2030).

Viral hepatitis is a major public health concern in China. In alignment with the World Health Organization (WHO) 2016 global strategy to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030, and in further implementation of the "Healthy China 2030" initiative, the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, together with eight other government departments, jointly issued China's Action Plan for Viral Hepatitis Prevention and Care (2025-2030) ("Action Plan"). Compared with the 2017-2020 Plan, the new Action Plan introduced, for the first time, explicit 80% diagnosis and treat

WikiBuild: a new application to support patient and health care professional involvement in the development of patient support tools.

Active patient and public involvement as partners in their own health care and in the development of health services is key to achieving a health care system that is responsive to patients' needs and values. It promotes better use of the health care system, and improves health outcomes, quality of life and patient satisfaction. By involving patients and health care professionals as partners in the creation and updating of patient health support tools, wikis--highly accessible, interactive vehicles of communication--have the potential to empower users to implement these support tools in daily l

Determinants of respectful maternity care among women who gave childbirth in Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Having a good provision of respectful maternity care (RMC) to a woman who gives childbirth is a crucial component of maternal health care to result in positive maternal and neonatal outcomes. Disrespect and lack of women-centered care in birth discourage a woman from seeking healthcare during childbirth contributing to poor healthcare-seeking behaviour and dissatisfaction with the maternity service. The current study aimed to assess key determinants of RMC during childbirth at selected public health facilities of the Gofa zone, Southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study d

Assessment of State, Local, and Territorial Zika Planning and Preparedness Activities - United States, June 2016-July 2017.

The emergency response to Zika virus disease required coordinated efforts and heightened collaboration among federal, state, local, and territorial public health jurisdictions. CDC activated its Emergency Operations Center on January 21, 2016, with seven task forces to support the national response. The State Coordination Task Force, which functions as a liaison between jurisdictions and federal operations during a response, coordinated the development of CDC Guidelines for Development of State and Local Risk-based Zika Action Plans, which included a Zika Preparedness Checklist (1). A comparison of specialist rehabilitation and care assistant support with specialist rehabilitation alone and usual care for people with Parkinson's living in the community: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease is a degenerative neurological condition that causes movement problems and other distressing symptoms. People with Parkinson's disease gradually lose their independence and strain is placed on family members. A multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation for people with Parkinson's is recommended but has not been widely researched. Studies are needed that investigate cost-effective community-based service delivery models to reduce disability and dependency and admission to long term care, and improve quality of life. METHODS: A pragmatic three parallel group r
