The patient perspective on use of Omalizumab in the in-hospital setting.

BACKGROUND: Omalizumab is approved for the treatment of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), allergic asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. While self-administration is licensed in Ireland, reimbursement restrictions require hospital-based delivery, placing significant burdens on patients and healthcare services. AIMS: To evaluate patient perspectives on hospital-based administration of Omalizumab, and assess the practical, financial, and environmental implications of current practices, alongside interest in transitioning to home-based therapy. METHODS: A cross-sectional surv

The history of smoking cessation support in Hungary: A narrative review.

Tobacco use remains the largest preventable cause of death worldwide, including Hungary with a smoking-related death rate in 2019 of 360/100000 (age-standardized death rate), among the highest in the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region. Despite the well-formulated tobacco control interventions defined by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in place, smoking prevalence in 2019 was high (27%) and has not decreased since 2014. Therefore, greater emphasis should be placed on addressing and treating smokers. This narrative review summarizes the progress in smoking

People, places, systems and society:A qualitative exploration of socio-cultural factors in head and neck cancer survivorship.

PURPOSE: People living with head and neck cancer (HNC) often endure permanent and life changing adverse effects of treatment and reduced health-related quality of life. Study of post-traumatic growth (PTG), is gaining traction to understand why some people living with cancer have better psychosocial outcomes than others. Current theoretical models on PTG point to the importance of 'socio-cultural influences' but do not provide insight into how such socio-cultural factors influence survivorship outcomes. This research aimed to illuminate pathways to PTG following HNC by exploring socio-cultural

Balancing Expectations: Navigating Medically Necessary Torso Procedures with Cosmetic Components in the Military Healthcare System.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons performing federal insurance-financed procedures involving medically necessary and cosmetic components must navigate patient expectations to avoid postoperative disappointment. This challenge is amplified in military healthcare, where different surgical specialties concurrently address the same diagnosis, while the Department of Defense policy on cosmetic fees and TRICARE's definition of excluded services adds further complexity. With the increasing prevalence of elevated body mass index, focus is directed toward diagnoses involving the torso, specifically gynecomastia in

Experiences of adults with opioid-treated chronic low back pain during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional survey study.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adults with opioid-treated chronic low back pain (CLBP), an understudied area. Participants in a "parent" clinical trial of non-pharmacologic treatments for CLBP were invited to complete a one-time survey on the perceived pandemic impact across several CLBP- and opioid therapy-related domains. Participant clinical and other characteristics were derived from the parent study's data. Descriptive statistics and latent class analysis analyzed quantitative data; qualitative thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data. The sur

The influence of selected factors on the attendance of the high-risk population in the early lung cancer detection program.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide, killing almost 22,000 people in Poland every year. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is the most promising tool of secondary prophylaxis leading to early detection and thus successful treatment of this malignancy. Knowledge about socio-demographic factors that affect participation in lung cancer early detection programs is essential for the future design and implementation of such programs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Among the 8649 participants of the Pomeranian Lung Cancer Screening Program (PLCSP), 1619 indiv

Global challenges and perspectives in acute and emergency general surgery in low and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Acute and emergency general surgery in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) faces critical disparities. Despite global and regional initiatives, surgical inequities persist due to fragile healthcare infrastructure, workforce shortages and insufficient policy integration. This study explores the systemic challenges and perspectives in acute and emergency surgical care in LMICs while evaluating global efforts to bridge these gaps. METHODS: We searched seven databases from inception to 26 November 2024, with an updated search through 12 June 2025. Records were screened in duplicat

Scaling up vaccination for people living in prisons: a global person-centred need for public health.

BACKGROUND: People living in prison (PLP) are at increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases due to overcrowding, high turnover, and limited healthcare access. Vaccination is a cost-effective preventive intervention, yet coverage in prisons remains inconsistent and frequently absent from national immunisation strategies. OBJECTIVE: To develop evidence-based guidance to strengthen vaccination services in prisons, ensuring equity, continuity of care, and alignment with international public health standards. METHODS: The EU-funded RISE-Vac project employed a multistage approach, including tw

Hospital readiness for implementation of health information system in public hospitals in Iraq: A mixed method approach.

BACKGROUND: Hospital Information Systems (HIS) are becoming increasingly vital to the digital transformation of healthcare; nevertheless, their implementation in low and middle-income countries is frequently obstructed by structural, financial, and governance issues. In Iraq, the extensive adoption of HIS is still at an early stage, with limited empirical evidence concerning institutional readiness. This study thus examined the organizational readiness for HIS implementation in the public hospitals located in Al-Amara, Iraq, and identified the structural and organizational determinants that sh

Is it feasible to implement a community-based participatory group programme to address issues of access to healthcare for people with disabilities in Luuka district Uganda? A study protocol for a mixed-methods pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: On average, people with disabilities face many difficulties in accessing healthcare and experience worse health outcomes. Yet, evidence on how to overcome these barriers is lacking. Participatory approaches are gaining prominence as they can generate low-cost, appropriate and scalable solutions. This study protocol is for the pilot testing of the co-created Participatory Learning and Action for Disability (PLA-D) groups to assess feasibility. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will pilot test PLA-D in five groups in Luuka district, Uganda during 2023. Each group will include approximately

Open lower limb fractures in Major Trauma Centers - A loss leader?

PURPOSE: Open lower limb fractures are resource intensive injuries. Regardless of the financing model, the cost of treatment is an important consideration for any healthcare provider. METHODS: Open lower limb fractures treated at our centre were identified over a six-month period. Isolated open femur or tibia fractures were included as well as cases with multiple fractures. Direct inpatient care costs were calculated and income was reviewed for each case according to 'Healthcare Resource Group' (HRG) cost codes. RESULTS: A total of 41 open lower limb fractures (32 patients) were identified.

Treating latent TB in primary care: a survey of enablers and barriers among UK General Practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Treating latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is an important public health intervention. In the UK, LTBI treatment is delivered in secondary care. Treating LTBI in the community would move care closer to home and could increase uptake and treatment completion rates. However, healthcare providers' views about the feasibility of this in the UK are unknown. This is the first study to investigate perceived barriers and enablers to primary care-based LTBI treatment among UK general practitioners (GPs). METHODS: A national survey amongst 140 randomly sampled UK GPs practising in areas

Prophylactic LYMphatic Reconstruction (LYMbR) to prevent lymphedema after node dissection for cutaneous malignancies: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cancer-related lymphedema (CRLE), a chronic complication of cancer treatment, affects 39-73% of patients post-lymph node dissection, impacting physical health, social participation, and finances. Prophylactic immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) via lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) has shown potential in reducing CRLE incidence by two-thirds following axillary and inguinal node dissection. However, rigorous phase III studies with long-term follow-up are still needed to confirm these promising results. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and long-term ou

Access to unauthorized hepatitis C generics: Perception and knowledge of physicians, pharmacists, patients and non-healthcare professionals.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes both acute and chronic infection, which can potentially develop into cirrhosis and liver cancer. Healthcare systems are struggling to finance costly direct-acting antiviral agents through public funding for uninsured patients, despite the unprecedented high cure rates of these agents. Vulnerable populations are at higher risk of HCV infection. The personal importation scheme is based on the legal right to import any unauthorized generics for personal use. This study was designed to assess the knowledge and perceptions of stakeholders on unauthorized g

Living with polio and postpolio syndrome in the United Kingdom.

The term Postpolio Syndrome (PPS) is used to describe new and late manifestations of poliomyelitis that occur later in life in polio survivors. Polio had been eradicated in the United Kingdom (UK) and most of Europe, although this is not the case in all countries. Research in this area has tended to focus upon the impact of polio and PPS on health status and functional health rather than its overall effect on people's lives. This study's two main aims were to explore the ways in which polio and PPS in the UK has affected the respondents' lives and to ascertain their views about how the quality

Understanding the crux of refugees' health inequities: the challenges of the health system in Nguenyyiel refugee camp in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has a longstanding history of providing refuge to forcibly displaced people. This commitment to refugee protection is underscored by progressive domestic policies and international commitments the country made to protect refugee rights. However, the country’s reliance on camp-based refugee protection has overshadowed these aspirations. Within these camps, highly regulated service provision and restricted out-of-camp movement limit refugees’ local integration and access to essential services. As a result, refugees have to rely on existing capacities and available services i

Societal Cost Analysis of Spinal Cord Stimulation in Chronic Pain Patients: A Danish Register-Based Study With 3 Years Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) constitutes a treatment option for patients with severe chronic pain responding insufficiently to pharmacological treatment. High device costs and expenses associated with surgical procedures and follow-up constitute a barrier to adoption. However, CNP patients also constitute a significant burden on public finances, with high public costs relating to health care utilisation, medicine, and lost work capacity. METHODS: We investigated the costs of SCS therapy from a healthcare perspective (primary and secondary healthcare and medicine costs) 3 years be
