Mammalian γ2 AMPK regulates intrinsic heart rate.

AMPK is a conserved serine/threonine kinase whose activity maintains cellular energy homeostasis. Eukaryotic AMPK exists as αβγ complexes, whose regulatory γ subunit confers energy sensor function by binding adenine nucleotides. Humans bearing activating mutations in the γ2 subunit exhibit a phenotype including unexplained slowing of heart rate (bradycardia). Here, we show that γ2 AMPK activation downregulates fundamental sinoatrial cell pacemaker mechanisms to lower heart rate, including sarcolemmal hyperpolarization-activated current (I f) and ryanodine receptor-derived diastolic local subsa

Autonomic neural control of the cardiovascular system in patients with Behçet's disease in the absence of neurological involvement.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multi-system disease presenting with recurrent oral and genital ulceration, and relapsing uveitis. Heart rate recovery (HRR) after exercise is a marker of parasympathetic activity. A delayed recovery of systolic blood pressure (SBP) after exercise might reflect sympathetic hyperactivity. The analysis of variations in heart rate has also been used to determine the balance between sympathetic and vagal nerve activities in the heart. Our objective was to determine HRR, the SBP response to exercise and heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with BD in the absen

The influence of heart rate on pulmonary arterial-left ventricular pressure relationships at end-diastole.

Increased resistance to blood flow stemming from structural and functional abnormalities of the lungs may cause pressure in the pulmonary artery to exceed that in the left ventricle at the end of ventricular diastole. This study explores the possible contribution of heart rate to the diastolic pressure gradient observed in the presence of acutely induced hypoxia. Pulmonary hemodynamics were examined in mongrel dogs with chronic atrioventricular dissociation with and without hypoxia at two different heart rates and during sequential increments in heart rate while the animals breathed room air.

Chronotropic response to exercise in patients with atrial fibrillation: relation to functional state.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relation between functional capacity and heart rate response to exercise in patients with atrial fibrillation. SUBJECTS: 73 consecutive patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Relation between functional capacity, measured as peak oxygen consumption (peak VO2; ml/min/kg), and heart rate at all stages of exercise in univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: Peak VO2 showed no correlation with resting heart rate, but it showed a negative correlation with heart rate during the first stage of exercise (r = -0.94, p < 0.01). Indeed, hear

Venous pressures and cardiac filling in turtles during apnoea and intermittent ventilation.

The amount of blood pumped by the heart (cardiac output) must be matched to the amount of blood returning to the heart (venous return), but the factors determining cardiac filling are sparsely understood in ectothermic vertebrates. Stroke volume is affected by heart rate along with central and peripheral venous pressures. In the present study, we investigated the heart rate dependency of cardiac filling in turtles, along with the changes in venous pressures that accompany ventilation. Experimental reductions in heart rate of anaesthetised turtles (Trachemys scripta) by the specific bradycardic

Therapeutic Considerations in Preventing Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 35.5 million US adults, but most patients are unaware of their diagnosis. Screening for CKD at-risk individuals is required, as symptoms do not appear until advanced stages. The combination of urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio and estimated glomerular filtration rate permits the classification of CKD stages and the determination of risk of CKD progression and cardiovascular disease, which is the most common cause of death in CKD. Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome highlights the complex interplay between the heart, kidney, and metabolic disorders, suc

Zero-Biased Photoelectrochemical Detection of Cardiac Biomarker Myoglobin Based on CdSeS/ZnS Quantum Dots and Barium Titanate Perovskite.

Cardiovascular diseases are considered one of the leading causes of premature mortality of patients worldwide. Therefore, rapid diagnosis of these diseases is crucial to ensure the patient's survival. During a heart attack or severe muscle damage, myoglobin is rapidly released in the body to constitute itself as a precise biomarker of acute myocardial infarction. Thus, we described the photoelectrochemical immunosensor development to detect myoglobin. It was based on fluorine-doped tin oxide modified with CdSeS/ZnSe quantum dots and barium titanate (BTO), designated as CdSeS/ZnSQDS/BTO. It was

Brain fog in neuropathic postural tachycardia syndrome may be associated with autonomic hyperarousal and improves after water drinking.

BACKGROUND: Brain fog is a common and highly disturbing symptom for patients with neuropathic postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Cognitive deficits have been measured exclusively in the upright body position and mainly comprised impairments of higher cognitive functions. The cause of brain fog is still unclear today. This study aimed to investigate whether increased autonomic activation might be an underlying mechanism for the occurrence of brain fog in neuropathic POTS. We therefore investigated cognitive function in patients with neuropathic POTS and a healthy control group depending on b

Relation among indices of effort and oxygen uptake in below-knee amputee and able-bodied children.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationships among simple methods for measuring effort in below-knee amputee (BKA) and able-bodied (AB) children. Ten BKA children and 13 AB children walked on a treadmill and selected a freely chosen walking speed (CWS). Children then walked for 2 minutes at each of three speeds: CWS, 20% above CWS, and 20% below CWS. Oxygen uptake, heart rate, physiological cost index, percent maximum heart rate, and vertical displacement of a surface marker on the sacrum were determined for each subject and speed. Linear regression with repeated measur

The optimal pacing rate: an unpredictable parameter.

A three phase relation has been demonstrated between increasing heart rate and cardiac output at rest. Phase I with cardiac output increasing with increasing heart rate, phase II a plateau, and phase III decreasing cardiac output with any further increase in heart rate. The "optimal rate" can be defined as the heart rate at the onset of phase II. Twenty patients were studied, 13 male, mean age 60 years (range 31-71 years). All had chronic complete heart block and established DDD pacing. A maximal exercise test was performed to determine peak sinus rate. Exercise hemodynamics were measured usin

Ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring in healthy newborn infants.

Twenty-four hour ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring is a useful method to document dysrhythmias and to assess treatment response. Various studies have been done in the pediatric age-group to determine normal heart rate values. In this study we determined the heart rate and rhythm patterns of 25 healthy newborn infants whose ages ranged between 3-10 days (mean 6.5 days). There were 15 males and 10 females. The maximum heart rate in these infants was 175-231 beats/min (207 +/- 14), minimum heart rate 60-121 beats/min (93 +/- 16) and the average heart rate was 130-161 beats/min (143 +/- 9

Effects of heart rate on extracellular [K+] accumulation during myocardial ischemia.

The effect of heart rate on extracellular [K+] ([K+]o) accumulation during total global ischemia was investigated in the isolated arterially perfused (37 degrees C) rabbit interventricular septum using intramyocardial K+-sensitive electrodes (tip diameter, 0.3 mm) and intracellular microelectrodes. The heart rates tested were 0, 25, 75, 125, and 150 beats/min in aqueous-perfused septa and 25, 75, and 125 beats/min in blood-perfused septa. In the lower range of heart rates (0-75 beats/min) the rate and magnitude of [K+]o accumulation during 10 min of ischemia were markedly rate dependent, but i

An Ensemble-Based AI Approach for Continuous Blood Pressure Estimation in Health Monitoring Applications.

Continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring provides valuable insight into the body's dynamic cardiovascular regulation across various physiological states such as physical activity, emotional stress, postural changes, and sleep. Continuous BP monitoring captures different variations in systolic and diastolic pressures, reflecting autonomic nervous system activity, vascular compliance, and circadian rhythms. This enables early identification of abnormal BP trends and allows for timely diagnosis and interventions to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as hypertension, stroke, h
