Ticks are the principal vectors and reservoirs of Coxiella burnetii. The identification of isolates is necessary for understanding the clinical diversity of Q fever in different geographic areas. This is the first report of isolation of C. burnetii from ticks by the shell-vial assay and by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of this pathogen in ticks. This study used proteomics to assess the impacts of metal contamination in the field on Sydney Rock oysters. Oysters were transplanted into Lake Macquarie, NSW, for two weeks in both 2009 and 2010. Experimental parenteral inoculation of Dermacentor reticulatus ticks with the rickettsia Coxiella burnetii (C.b.) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus resulted in a generalized rickettsial and viral infection, irrespective of whether the agents were given simultaneously or by a 7 days interval apart. Both agents multiplied intensively in ticks, C.b. being detectable predominantly in cytoplasmic vacuoles and TBE virus mostly in the endoplasmic reticulum.

There are two dose-dependent barriers to the transmission of western equine encephalomyelitis virus in infected female Culex tarsalis.
