Differences in sexual risk behaviors among male and female HIV-seronegative heterosexual methamphetamine users.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased awareness and attention towards methamphetamine (MA) use among men who have sex with men (MSM), few studies have examined behaviors and effects of MA use among heterosexual populations. OBJECTIVE: To learn whether behaviors and effects of MA use among heterosexuals differ according to gender. METHODS: We examined gender differences in sociodemographic characteristics, drug use practices, sexual behaviors, and consequences and motivations for MA use among 452 HIV-negative MA users (306 men, 146 women) who had engaged in unprotected sex and used MA in the previous

Disparities in child abuse victimization in lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual women in the Nurses' Health Study II.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research documents multiple health disparities by sexual orientation among women, yet little is known about the possible causes of these disparities. One underlying factor may be heightened risk for abuse victimization in childhood in lesbian and bisexual women. METHODS: Using survey data from 63,028 women participating in the Nurses' Health Study II, we investigated sexual orientation group differences in emotional, physical, and sexual abuse in childhood and adolescence. Multivariable log-binomial and linear regression models were used to examine orientation gr

Sexually transmitted disease/HIV and heterosexual risk among miners in townships of Yunnan Province, China.

The HIV epidemics in some areas of Yunnan Province, southwestern China, are close to becoming generalized, demanding the need for a better understanding of sexually transmitted disease (STD) and heterosexual HIV risk. While female heterosexual risk is captured by sentinel surveillance, less is known about clients of commercial sex workers and other subsets of men at increased risk of STD/HIV. A convenience sample of 232 miners in townships of Yunnan Province completed a questionnaire and provided specimens for STD/HIV testing. Relative prevalences of HIV, gonorrhea, and chlamydia among sexuall

Concurrent partnerships among rural African Americans with recently reported heterosexually transmitted HIV infection.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate concurrent sexual partnerships among African Americans in North Carolina with recently reported heterosexually transmitted HIV infection. DESIGN: Population-based case series of persons with newly reported HIV infection. METHODS: Household interviews concerning sexual and other risk behaviors for HIV transmission were conducted among African Americans, 18-59 years old, who had been reported to the state health department within the preceding 6 months as having heterosexually acquired HIV infection. Dates of sexual partnerships were analyzed to identify concurrency

Nares occlusion eliminates heterosexual partner selection without disrupting coitus in ferrets of both sexes.

Using an airtight Y maze and a new method to induce peripheral anosmia in ferrets, we assessed the contribution of conspecific odors, either alone or in combination with visual and auditory signals, to heterosexual partner preference. Sexually naive ferrets were gonadectomized and treated with sex steroids, after which their nares were either bilaterally occluded using dental impression material or were sham-occluded. Behavioral and histological evidence suggested that nares occlusion blocked access of odors to the main olfactory epithelium for the duration of the study. Sham-occluded females

The mucosal immune system in the human female reproductive tract: potential insights into the heterosexual transmission of HIV.

Using isolated cell suspensions and in situ techniques, we have partially characterized the organization, functional capacity, and sex hormone regulation of the mucosal immune system in the human female reproductive tract. Isolated cells suspensions have been used to demonstrate that the uterus contains antigen-presenting cells that are functionally able to present antigen to autologous tetanus toxoid-specific T cells. Immunophenotypic analyses of the female reproductive tract by three-color immunofluorescent staining has been used to show that lymphoid aggregates, which are absent in postmeno

Factors associated with nonuse of condoms in heterosexual men and women attending an HIV testing clinic in Israel.

OBJECTIVES: To examine gender differences in HIV-related knowledge, perceived vulnerability, beliefs in self-control, type of sexual partnership, and their associations with nonuse of condoms. METHODS: Heterosexual men and women who voluntarily attended an HIV testing clinic in Israel were asked to complete a self-report questionnaire. Scales of HIV knowledge and control and a single item for vulnerability were used. Type of sexual relationship (monogamous vs. nonmonogramous) and condom use in vaginal sex (never vs. ever) referred to the previous 6 months. Response rate was 84%; 154 men and 1

Sexual relationships, risk behaviour, and condom use in the spread of sexually transmitted infections to heterosexual men.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of patient defined non-regular sexual relationships and other risk behaviours on the incidence of sexually transmitted infections in heterosexual men and the role of condom use in the prevention of their spread. DESIGN: A prospective cross sectional study of sexual behaviour reported by a standardised self administered questionnaire in new patients who presented for screening and diagnosis. SETTING: A genitourinary medicine clinic in west London. SUBJECTS: 957 consecutive newly attending heterosexual men who completed a sexual behaviour questionnaire in 1993

Hepatitis B virus infection in a group of heterosexuals with multiple partners in Amsterdam, The Netherlands: implications for vaccination?

The aim of the study was to assess prevalence and incidence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection among heterosexual men and women with multiple partners attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic and to establish risk factors of HBV infection in order to consider immunisation for those subjects. A prospective study of heterosexual men and women selected on having multiple partners and presenting to an STD clinic as new patients was carried out from October 1987 through December 1989. Follow-up continued until December 1990 at the STD clinic of the Municipal Health Service of Amsterd

Heterosexual transmission of hepatitis B virus in Belle Glade, Florida. Belle Glade Study Group.

A population-based serosurvey of human immunodeficiency virus in Belle Glade, FL, enabled evaluation of risk factors for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in this racially mixed community. Serum samples from 725 adults and 130 children were tested for markers of HBV infection, and histories of exposure to HBV were obtained by interview. The overall prevalence of past or present HBV infection was 26%; prevalence was 9% among whites, 5% among Hispanics, 30% among blacks, and 57% among Haitians. Prevalence of HBV infection was 3% in children aged 2-10 years and increased to 31% in adults greater

Community-acquired opportunistic infections and defective cellular immunity in heterosexual drug abusers and homosexual men.

Fourteen previously healthy young patients with unusual community-acquired opportunistic infections were seen over a period of three years. They differ from patients previously described in that 11 were heterosexual drug abusers (including two women) and only three were homosexual men. There were eight Puerto Ricans, five blacks, and one white. Infections included Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (seven), disseminated Mycobacterium intracellulare infection, histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and cytomegalovirus infection (one each), oral thrush (13), and Candida esophagitis (two). All patients had

Gonorrhoea in the asymptomatic patient: presentation and the role of contact tracing for heterosexual men and women and for homosexual men.

Clinically silent gonorrhoea is the major problem in the control of the disease. Only 12 per cent of infected women reported in 1974 because of symptoms, compared with 97 per cent of infected heterosexual men and only 35 per cent of homosexual men with gonococcal proctitis alone. Homosexual men, compared with heterosexual men, had twice as many subsequent sexual contacts after infection and had a higher incidence of early syphilis. Eighty-four per cent had experienced passive anorectal intercourse. Ninety-seven per cent of men with gonococcal urethritis reported because of symptoms, but occasi

Role of afterplay in female sexual satisfaction in heterosexual relationship: A prospective randomized two arm study.

Despite the recognized emotional importance of post-coital intimate behaviors such as hugging, cuddling, talking, kissing, massaging, listening to sensual music, showering, and reading erotic literature (collectively termed afterplay), their impact on female sexual satisfaction has not been systematically studied. This prospective randomized study evaluated the effect of afterplay on sexual satisfaction among sexually active women in heterosexual relationships. Couples with medical comorbidities, psychiatric disorders, or diagnosed sexual dysfunction were excluded. Participants were randomized

Preventing the heterosexual epidemic: Responses and contingencies during the HIV/AIDS crisis in Denmark, 1981-1997.

HIV/AIDS posed a significant health threat in Denmark from the early 1980s until the end of the 1990s, claiming approximately 2,000 lives. Gay men, hemophiliacs, drug users, sex workers and migrants were overwhelmingly among the victims of the disease. They also constituted the groups most associated with it. This led to a raised level of public attention to these groups; a heightened visibility that ambiguously resulted both in improving the life conditions of some while also increasing the stigma of others. This article analyses the roles of different cross-sector actors in shaping the respo

Approaches to HIV and STI Testing Among Heterosexually Active Women and Men in New York City.

New York City surveillance data document substantial heterosexual transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Existing research provides limited insight into how heterosexual adults approach and use HIV and STI testing, an intervention that can inform the need for treatment and reduce onward transmission. Through in-depth interviews with 50 heterosexually active women and men in New York City conducted in 2023 and 2024, we found that testing for HIV and STIs was widespread and integrated into broader health care routines. Our exploratory study identified three primary

Stigma and depression among heterosexual men and women living with HIV in the UK: Investigating a conceptual framework.

BACKGROUND: Examining the relationship of HIV stigmatisation in different social settings with internalised HIV stigma, loneliness and depression among people with HIV, may help in further understanding HIV stigma and informing approaches and interventions to help to mitigate the impacts. The aim of this paper was to investigate among heterosexual men and women, a devised conceptual model of hypothesized causal connections between socio-demographic, HIV-related and psychosocial factors, measures of HIV stigmatisation, and depressive symptoms, in which feelings of loneliness because of HIV are

The development and validation of the social media sexual objectification scale among Chinese heterosexual young women.

In recent years, an increasing number of researchers have shown interest in sexual objectification on social media and its harmful outcomes. However, reliable instruments to measure sexual objectification within the social media context remain limited. This research describes the development and validation of the Social Media Sexual Objectification Scale (SMSOS) among Chinese heterosexual young women across two studies. Study 1 (N = 590) employed exploratory graph analysis to identify a four-factor structure: Direct Sexual Objectification, Reduction to Sexual Object, Reduction to Body Appearan
