The association between knee airbag deployment and knee-thigh-hip fracture injury risk in motor vehicle collisions: A matched cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: In the U.S. alone, an estimated 30,000 knee-thigh-hip (KTH) injuries occur annually in frontal motor vehicle collisions. These fractures typically occur through occupant contact with the vehicle's knee bolster. Research has suggested that knee airbags (KABs) can mitigate the forces sustained during this contact, resulting in decreased injury risk; however, previous research has been limited by small sample sizes or by occurring in a controlled setting. The objective of the current study is to determine the effectiveness of KABs on KTH fracture risk using nationally representative

Mechanical Efficiency and Injury Risk in Leg Kicks Across Combat Sports: A Narrative Review of Stance, Hip Rotation, and Striking Surface Effects.

Leg kicks are fundamental techniques in combat sports based on a proximal-distal sequence involving several factors that can affect mechanical efficiency and injury risk. However, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews that integrate biomechanical and epidemiological evidence on injuries in an interdisciplinary context. Background/Objectives: This narrative review synthesizes current evidence to explore the relationship between mechanical efficiency and injury risk in kick-based combat sports. Methods: The search was conducted across Web of Science and Scopus (January 2000-March 2025) or stu

Association Between Preoperative Frailty and Postoperative Acute Kidney Injury, Complications, and Resource Utilization in Older Patients Undergoing Hip Fracture Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures are a major public health burden in older adults. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is among the most frequent complications following hip fracture surgery and is associated with poor clinical outcomes. We investigated the relationship between preoperative frailty and postoperative complications, including AKI, using a nationwide electronic medical records database in Japan. METHODS: We identified patients aged ≥ 65 years who underwent hip fracture surgery between April 2005 and December 2021. Frailty was measured using the Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS), with scores ≥ 5

Myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery and per operative fibrin metabolism in patients undergoing hip-fracture surgery: an observational study.

Myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS) is associated with a 2-3-fold increased risk of subsequent major cardiovascular events and postoperative mortality. The pathological mechanism behind MINS is not fully uncovered. We hypothesized that patients with MINS following hip fracture surgery would have an altered haemostatic balance pre- and postoperative compared with patients without MINS. This was investigated in a prospective single-centre observational study including patients consecutively. The outcomes were changes in thrombin generation, fibrinogen/fibrin turnover, tissue plasm

The effects of phenol neurolysis of the obturator nerve on the distribution of buttock-seat interface pressure in spinal cord injury patients with hip adductor spasticity.

OBJECTIVES: Hip adductor spasticity may adversely effect shear-force and pressure distribution on the buttocks, where ulcerations most frequently appear in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Phenol neurolysis of the obturator nerve (ON) is commonly used to manage hip adductor spasticity. This study aimed to determine the effects on the distribution of buttock-seat interface pressure (BSIP) in a group of SCI patients with adductor spasticity that underwent ON blockade with phenol. METHODS: We reviewed the records of SCI patients that were admitted to our clinic between January 2009 and De

Increasing hip and knee flexion during a drop-jump task reduces tibiofemoral shear and compressive forces: implications for ACL injury prevention training.

Although most ACL injury prevention programmes encourage greater hip and knee flexion during landing, it remains unknown how this technique influences tibiofemoral joint forces. We examined whether a landing strategy utilising greater hip and knee flexion decreases tibiofemoral anterior shear and compression. Twelve healthy women (25.9 ± 3.5 years) performed a drop-jump task before and after a training session (10-15 min) that emphasised greater hip and knee flexion. Peak tibiofemoral anterior shear and compressive forces were calculated using an electromyography (EMG)-driven knee model that i

Hip Muscle Strength Ratios Predicting Groin Injury in Male Soccer Players Using Machine Learning and Multivariate Analysis-A Prospective Cohort Study.

Despite ongoing efforts, the relationship between groin strength and injury remains unclear. The challenge of accurately predicting injuries presents an opportunity for researchers to develop prevention strategies to reduce the occurrence of such injuries. Consequently, this issue requires further investigation to obtain insights into effective mitigation strategies. In 120 male soccer players, the maximum isometric strength of the hip muscle groups was measured, and the strength ratios were calculated. Previous injury and anthropometric data were registered. Injury data were collected followi

Cueing Dancers to "Externally Rotate From the Hips" Improves Potentially Injurious Ankle Joint Angles and Contact Forces During a Demipointe Ballet Position.

Introduction: The demipointe dance position puts the ankle at high risk of overuse injury and posteromedial ankle pain due to increased ankle valgus forces. Previous work has shown that creating lower limb external rotation intrinsic to demipointe with hip external rotation reduces foot pronation that causes ankle valgus stress. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to examine long axis rotation kinematics of the hip, knee, and ankle as well as the ankle joint contact forces in demipointe to better understand the biomechanical impact(s) of the specific cue to increase hip external rotation i
