Mortality pattern at a children's emergency ward, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria.

A retrospective study of the pattern of paediatric deaths at the children's emergency room (CHER) of the University College Hospital, Ibadan revealed a steady decline from 208 per 1000 admissions in 1978 to 179 per 1000 admissions in 1986. The study, however, showed that one in every five children admitted to the CHER died over the study period 1978, and 1981-1986. Measles has the highest proportionate death rate of 13.1% and it shares the highest fatality rate of 32.6% with tetanus. Gastroenteritis and bronchopneumonia, which were major causes of deaths in the CHER in the early 1970s decline

Maternal mortality at the Women's and Children's Hospital, South Okkalapa (1978-1982).

The maternal deaths between the years 1978 and 1982 were studied. There were 22,468 maternities and 10,623 abortion patients treated at the hospital. There were 44 maternal deaths; 22 due to abortion and 22 due to other causes. The maternal mortality rate including abortions was 1.33 per 1,000 maternities and that excluding abortions 0.98 per 1,000. The abortion was 2.0 per 1,000 abortions treated at the hospital. To reduce maternal mortality, ways and means should be found to reduce the abortion deaths, most of which were avoidable.

Analysis of variables affecting perinatal mortality: St. Louis City Hospital, 1969-1975.

A marked drop in perinatal mortality at St. Louis City Hospital No. 1 (SLCH) from 1974 to 1975 (39.7 vs 20.6 per 1000 births) prompted a detailed analysis of various factors which might have effected the change. Comparisons were also made between SLCH and St. Mary's Health Center (SMHC), a private hospital affiliated with St. Louis University. The significant drop in perinatal mortality at SLCH in 1975 seems to be due to a combination of various factors: 1) improvement in antepartum care, 2) increase use of cesarean sections, and 3) the influence of intrapartum fetal monitoring.

Hospital Medicaid payer mix associated with inpatient mortality following traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes are well-documented at the patient level, but less is known about how hospital-level Medicaid burden influences outcomes after TBI. We investigated whether hospitals with a higher Medicaid payer mix were associated with poorer outcomes for patients with TBI. METHODS: Using the ACS TQIP data set, we performed a retrospective cohort study of adult patients with TBI. We calculated the proportion of Medicaid-insured patients at each hospital and classified hospitals into quartiles of advancing Medicaid payer mix. Risk-adjusted multi

In-hospital mortality after pericardiocentesis: role of effusion etiology and hemodynamic physiology.

AIMS: This study evaluated the impact of effusion etiology, hemodynamic presentation, and comorbidity burden on in-hospital outcomes following pericardiocentesis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 62 adults who underwent pericardiocentesis at a tertiary academic hospital (2021-2024) was performed. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and a post hoc Pericardial Risk Score (PRS) were evaluated as predictors. RESULTS: Median age was 72 years (55% male; median CCI 2). Complications occurred in 13% and recurrence in 10%. In-hospital m…

Relationship between hospital mortality and readmission rates after transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial hospital-level variation in 30-day risk-standardized mortality rate (RSMR) and risk-standardized readmission rate (RSRR) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). However, the relationship between hospital RSMRs and RSRRs has not been well characterized. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed data on 141 905 Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries who underwent TAVR across 512 hospitals between 1 October 2015 and 31 December 2020. The primary and secondary outcomes of interest were 30-day all-cause mortality and 30-day all-cause readmissions, respectively.

Determinants of Mortality for Ventilated Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia and Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia.

UNLABELLED: Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is the most common hospital-acquired infection, accounting for 22% of all nosocomial infections. The available studies to date have not attempted to assess whether confounding factors may account for the observed difference in mortality for the two forms of nosocomial pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation, namely ventilated HAP (vHAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). OBJECTIVES: To determine if vHAP is an independent predictor of mortality among patients with nosocomial pneumonia. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Single-cente
