Comparative 4-year risk and type of hospital admission among homeless and housed emergency department attendees: longitudinal study of hospital records in England 2013-2018.

OBJECTIVES: People experiencing homelessness are frequent users of secondary care. Currently, there is no study of potentially preventable admissions for homeless patients in England. We aim to estimate the number of potentially preventable hospital admissions for homeless patients and compare to housed patients with similar characteristics. DESIGN: Retrospective matched cohort study. SETTING: Hospitals in England. PARTICIPANTS: 16 161 homeless patients and 74 780 housed patients aged 16-75 years who attended an emergency department (ED) in England in 2013/2014, matched on the basis of age,

[Adherence to guidelines on management of acute coronary syndrome in Russian hospitals and outcomes of hospitalization (data from the RECORD-2 Registry)].

BACKGROUND: Complete following existing guidelines for management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is known to be associated with better outcomes. Partly this is explained by lesser adherence to recommendations in high risk patients. Aim of our study was to assess relationship between degree of following current guidelines and in hospital outcomes independently from initial assessment of risk. METHODS: Each key recommendation from guidelines issued between 2008 and 2011 (13 for STE ACS, 12 for NSTE ACS) was given weight of 1. Sum of these units constituted index of guideline adherence (IGA).

Assessment and Use of Electronic Patient Records for Smoking Cessation Support in Hospital Setting: A Cross-Sectional Study.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable illness and death. Hospital admissions offer a critical opportunity to support smoking cessation. Electronic patient record (ePR) systems can enable systematic identification and coordination of cessation care; however, clinician engagement with smoking-related ePR functionality is not well understood. This study examined smoking-related assessment and documentation practices, and determinants influencing use of the ePR for smoking cessation support in a regional Australian hospital. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was dist

The economic burden of stomas in the UK: a retrospective observational study of health records and hospital encounters.

BACKGROUND: Stomas divert waste from the small intestine (ileostomy), large intestine (colostomy) or ureters (urostomy), and complications are common. AIMS: This study evaluated healthcare resource utilisation (HCRU) and costs of stomas from a UK perspective. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study of adults with new stomas (New Stoma Group) or new/existing stomas and >6 months of follow-up (Established Stoma Group) using health records linked with hospital encounters (January 2009-December 2018). Age- and sex-matched controls were identified for each stoma case (1:50). FINDIN

Study of skin neoplasms in a university hospital: integration of anatomopathological records and its interface with the literature.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer is a highly prevalent condition with a multifactorial etiology resulting from genetic alterations, environmental and lifestyle factors. In Brazil, among all malignant tumors, skin cancers have the highest incidences. OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively evaluate the incidence, prevalence and profile of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and cutaneous melanoma in Campos dos Goytacazes and region. METHODS: In total, 2,207 histopathological reports of a local reference hospital were analyzed between January 2013 and December 2015, of which 306 corresponded to the neo

[Local communalization of clinical records between the municipal community hospital and local medical institutes by using information technology].

We introduced the electronic health record system in 2002. We produced a community medical network system to consolidate all medical treatment information from the local institute in 2010. Here, we report on the present status of this system that has been in use for the previous 2 years. We obtained a private server, set up a virtual private network(VPN)in our hospital, and installed dedicated terminals to issue an electronic certificate in 50 local institutions. The local institute applies for patient agreement in the community hospital(hospital designation style). They are then entitled to a

A retrospective survey of human hydatidosis based on hospital records during the period 1990-2003 in Ngorongoro, Tanzania.

A 13-year (1990-2003) retrospective study was carried out to investigate the occurrence of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in patients at Wasso hospital in Ngorongoro district, Tanzania. Hospitalization records were reviewed and confirmed cases of CE were classified according to ward of residence, age, sex, cyst location and type. A total of 171 hydatidosis patients were diagnosed and operated giving an average of 13 cases per year, equivalent to approximately 10 cases per 100,000 people per year. Cystic echinococcosis affected more females (59.1%) than males (40.9%). A significantly higher number

[Positive predictive value of ICD-9-CM codes in hospital inpatient discharge abstract records, for identifying adverse events].

A retrospective study was conducted in the ambit of Risk Management research, in order to assess adverse events in patients hospitalised in hospitals in one Local Health Authority of the Piemonte region. Specifically, the aims of the study were to: evaluate the relative frequency of ICD-9-CM codes used to define adverse events, with respect to the total number of hospital discharge records submitted in 2003; identify true and false positives, by hospital chart review; estimate the positive predictive value (VPP) of the ICD-9-CM codes used, and determine, in each case, whether the adverse event

Historical birth records from 1896 to 1944 from the Basel maternity hospital, Switzerland, reveal significant obstetric selection pressures.

Maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality have declined dramatically during the last century. Historical data are therefore important sources to study the evolutionary selection pressures related to childbirth and how they have fluctuated over time. We analyzed birth records detailing 17,473 births of the years 1896 to 1944 from the maternal hospital Basel, Switzerland. This enabled the evaluation of changes in anthropometric data across several generations during times of varying socioeconomic stress. Our results revealed very weak correlations (r< 0.2) of maternal measurements such as st
