Microbes rarely exist alone; instead, they live in dynamic multi-species communities with a range of metabolic capacities. To establish within a polymicrobial community, an organism must compete with the other members of the community for space and nutrients. In addition, microbes form complex metabolic interdependencies in polymicrobial environments, and these nutrient exchanges are central to overall community function. Interactions between microbial community members dictate key processes, including nutrient cycling, tolerance to disturbances, and disease progression, and these interactions

During the last several years, mechanistic models appeared that attempt to describe virus-host interactions based on the fundamental laws of chemistry and physics, as well as to relate them to biological concepts of pathogenicity and virulence. However, the need to describe interactions (including biological interactions) with the most basic laws of physics and chemistry for deeper and more encompassing understanding still exists. Chemical and thermodynamic models give explanations for most biological phenomena (e.g. microbial lifecycle) by treating them as chemical reactions or physical proce

Sirtuins's central role in governing metabolic processes has been known for decades. However, over the past two decades, sirtuin functions have been linked to immune regulation and immunity. Sirtuins are NAD+ dependent protein deacylases involved in the regulation of several important biological processes ranging from energy homeostasis, metabolism, aging, apoptosis, autophagy, immunity, adipocyte, and muscle differentiation. Here, in this review, we discuss the role of sirtuins in several infectious diseases including viral, bacterial, and protozoan infections with detailed emphasis on bacter

Toxoplasma gondii is a remarkable species with a rich cell, developmental, and population biology. It is also sometimes responsible for serious disease in animals and humans and the stages responsible for such disease are relatively easy to study in vitro or in laboratory animal models. As a result of all this, Toxoplasma has become the subject of intense investigation over the last several decades, becoming a model organism for the study of the phylum of which it is a member, Apicomplexa. This has led to an ever-growing number of investigators applying an ever-expanding set of techniques to d

Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular pathogens. They undergo a biphasic developmental cycle differentiating between the infectious but metabolically quiescent elementary body and the vegetative, but non-infectious reticulate body. Chlamydia spends a significant portion of its development in the non-infectious stage, demanding an effective strategy of manipulating the host cells to ensure its intracellular survival and replication. A common target of all Chlamydia species studied so far is the host cell cytoskeleton, with past and recent findings revealing crucial roles in invasion, inclusion

Oral mucositis (OM) is among the most common, painful, and debilitating toxicities of cancer regimen-related treatment, resulting in the formation of ulcers, which are susceptible to increased colonization of microorganisms. Novel discoveries in OM have focused on understanding the host-microbial interactions, because current pathways have shown that major virulence factors from microorganisms have the potential to contribute to the development of OM and may even prolong the existence of already established ulcerations, affecting tissue healing. Additional comprehensive and disciplined clinica

This review of Brucella-host interactions and immunobiology discusses recent discoveries as the basis for pathogenesis-informed rationales to prevent or treat brucellosis. Brucella spp., as animal pathogens, cause human brucellosis, a zoonosis that results in worldwide economic losses, human morbidity, and poverty. Although Brucella spp. infect humans as an incidental host, 500,000 new human infections occur annually, and no patient-friendly treatments or approved human vaccines are reported. Brucellae display strong tissue tropism for lymphoreticular and reproductive systems with an intracell

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Haemophilus ducreyi, the causative agent of the sexually transmitted infection chancroid, is primarily a pathogen of human skin. During infection, H. ducreyi thrives extracellularly in a milieu of professional phagocytes and other antibacterial components of the innate and adaptive immune responses. This review summarizes our understanding of the interplay between this pathogen and its host that leads to development and persistence of disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: H. ducreyi expresses key virulence mechanisms to resist host defenses. The secreted LspA proteins are tyrosine-phos

Host-parasite interactions represent an evolutionary arms race, with parasites evolving strategies to exploit host resources, and hosts deploying mechanisms to resist or tolerate infection. Unlike vertebrates, which possess a sophisticated immune system, invertebrates rely entirely on innate immunity to combat pathogens. Yet, the molecular underpinnings and life-history consequences of immune activation remain little understood in non-insect invertebrates. Here, we combine life-history trait analysis with transcriptomics to investigate immune responses in an aquatic invertebrate exposed to a n

Time-resolved transcriptomic profiling has been used to study phage-host interactions for more than a decade. However, the resulting datasets are not readily accessible for custom re-analysis, and resources are lacking that provide standardized processing, storage, and analysis of transcriptomes from phage infections. Here, we present the PhageExpressionAtlas, the first bioinformatics resource for storing time-resolved dual RNA-sequencing data from phage infections. This data was processed uniformly using a custom analysis pipeline and is presented for interactive exploration through visualiza

The human vagina harbors a microbial community that differs markedly in compositional structure from all mammals, including closely related primates. Lactobacilli are the most abundant vaginal species, and their dominance in this niche is associated with protection against adverse health outcomes, including preterm birth, sexually transmitted infections, and bacterial vaginosis. However, the vaginal environment can also support compositions of diverse anaerobic bacteria, which have been linked to poor reproductive health outcomes. Here, we review current knowledge on host and microbial determi

Microorganisms colonize nearly all anatomical sites of the human body, with the oral cavity hosting one of the most diverse, accessible, and densely populated microbial ecosystems. The oral microbiome comprises a complex consortium of bacteria, fungi, viruses, archaea, and protozoa that inhabit distinct ecological niches. Each niche provides unique physicochemical conditions that shape microbial composition, structure, and function. In addition to oral and dental sites, oral biofilms frequently develop on dental materials, appliances, and prostheses, where surface characteristics such as rough

Vector-borne diseases are a leading cause of death worldwide and pose a substantial unmet medical need. Pathogens binding to host extracellular proteins (the "exoproteome") represents a crucial interface in the etiology of vector-borne disease. Here, we used bacterial selection to elucidate host-microbe interactions in high throughput (BASEHIT)-a technique enabling interrogation of microbial interactions with 3,324 human exoproteins-to profile the interactomes of 82 human-pathogen samples, including 30 strains of arthropod-borne pathogens and 8 strains of related non-vector-borne pathogens. The thymus is a vital organ of the immune system that plays an essential role in thymocyte development and maturation. Thymic atrophy occurs with age (physiological thymic atrophy) or as a result of viral, bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection (pathological thymic atrophy). Thymic atrophy directly results in loss of thymocytes and/or destruction of the thymic architecture, and indirectly leads to a decrease in naïve T cells and limited T cell receptor diversity. Thus, it is important to recognize the causes and mechanisms that induce thymic atrophy. In this review, we highlight current prog

The manipulation of animal behavior by parasitic organisms is one of the most complex adaptations to have arisen via natural selection. Among the most impressive examples of behavioral manipulation are the zombie-ant fungi [1]. In this association, ants are controlled to leave the colony and perform a stereotyped death grip behavior, where they bite onto vegetation over foraging trails, before being killed for the post mortem fungal growth. Manipulation functions to provide a platform outside the nest, from which fungal parasites actively shoot out spores, targeting foraging ants because withi

Infectious pneumonias affect millions of individuals annually worldwide, accounting for unacceptably high mortalities in many populations. Following pathogen introduction to the lower respiratory tract by inhalation or aspiration, complex interactions between the host and the microbe determine whether the microbe is cleared or establishes an infectious pneumonia. Even modest variations in the host immune response to pathogens may have potentially profound impacts on pathogenesis, severity, and eventual survival of infectious pneumonias. In this article, the authors summarize the most common co
