METHODS: Using data from the Ontario Mental Health Reporting System (2013-2023), the authors analyzed 53,088 adult psychiatric detentions. Sociodemographic and clinical variables from the Resident Assessme…

HIV Prioritization and Risk Perception Among an Online Sample of Men Who Have Sex With Men in the United States.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) may prioritize interpersonal and structural factors, such as LGBTQ-related inequalities, housing instability, financial insecurity, and relationship seeking, over HIV prevention. The aim of this study was to assess how MSM prioritize HIV relative to other factors and the association between HIV prioritization, HIV testing and sexual risk behavior, and perceived risk. Data were collected from a national online survey of MSM in the United States assessing HIV knowledge and prioritization. Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevalence among Homeless Adults in the United States: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness significantly affects health and well-being. Homeless adults often experience co-occurring and debilitating physica … rable population. The Role of Architecture and Design in the Management of Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological condition characterized by the development of daily disabling symptoms. Although the architecture and design of a PD patient's environment can hinder or facilitate full participation in daily activities, their putative role in the management of these patients has received little attention to date. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the evidence of architectural and design features in the management of people with PD. METHODS: An electronic database search of observational and experimental studies was conducted in MED

Recently released with HIV/AIDS: primary care treatment needs and experiences.

The research objectives of this study are to describe the re-entry experiences of people recently released from jail who were living with HIV/AIDS, and to identify factors that influence their access to primary care and adherence to a treatment regimen. The research used a mixed-method, qualitative and quantitative research design. The findings indicate that the overall instability in the lives of many of the former inmates studied hampered their ability to attend to their HIV/AIDS-related health care needs. Most former inmates returned to the community with co-occurring problems related to ho

Mental Health Care Utilization Following Eviction Moratorium Expirations.

IMPORTANCE: Housing instability is associated with adverse mental health and increased health care use. Policies that reduce eviction risk may affect mental health-related health care utilization. Eviction moratoria enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic provide a natural experiment to examine these associations. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the lifting of eviction moratoria during the pandemic was associated with changes in mental health care utilization. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A synthetic difference-in-differences approach was used, with state-week level, nationwide data of all-…

Social instability during peri-adolescent asthma exacerbates airway inflammation but ameliorates anxiety-like behavior and prefrontal cortex expression of stress regulation genes in mice.

Allergic asthma is the most common chronic health challenge for youth in the United States, and it occurs during a critical time in neurobiological development when stressors can have long-lasting effects on adult mental health and stress regulation. Prior research has shown that youth who experience asthma or social challenges are at increased risk for developing anxiety. To determine if chronic social changes during development exacerbate allergic asthma immune function, anxiety, and/or stress physiology, we used a mouse model to test the influences of youth allergen exposure and constantly

Risk factors for stimulant use among homeless and unstably housed adult women.

BACKGROUND: One of the most common causes of death among homeless and unstably housed women is acute intoxication where cocaine is present. While correlates of stimulant use have been determined in prior research, few studies have assessed risk factors of use specifically in this high-risk population. METHODS: We sampled biological women with a history of housing instability from community-based venues to participate in a cohort study. Baseline and 6-month follow-up data were used to determine the relative risk of stimulant use (crack cocaine, powder cocaine or methamphetamine) among individu…

Examining women's agency in managing intimate partner violence and the related risk of homelessness: The role of harm minimisation.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has a detrimental impact on women and children's emotional, physical and social well-being and has been identified as one of the most common contributors to women's experiences of housing instabilities and homelessness. Women affected by IPV often experience a great level of uncertainty around housing solutions when trying to leave an abusive partner. This study explores women's responses to IPV and the related risk of homelessness through women's narratives (n = 22) in Queensland, Australia. Of particular interest are women's decisions and actions to minimise t
