Remembering what did not happen: the role of hypnosis in memory recall and false memories formation.

Memory recall is subject to errors that can lead to the formation of false memories. Several factors affect memory processes, such as attention deficits or emotional distress. Additionally, cardiovascular diseases may lead to cognitive decline and memory loss, also increasing the occurrence of false events recall. Hypnosis has proved to affect the autonomic nervous system, positively impacting the cardiovascular response. Hypnosis has also been suggested as a tool to enhance memory and autobiographical events recall in both healthy and unhealthy individuals; however, this approach has led to s…

Application and Perception of Hypnosis in Dental Practice: A Cross-Sectional Survey in German-Speaking Regions.

Despite its benefits, hypnosis remains underutilized in dental practice, largely due to misconceptions. This study assessed its use and perception among dentists in German-speaking countries. A validated questionnaire was distributed to a total of 1,081 members of hypnosis societies in Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, yielding 271 replies (response rate: 25.1%). Of these, 57.6% were retired or nearing retirement, and only 10% had graduated in the past 15 years. Most (64.2%) first encountered hypnosis during postgraduate training, while 91.1% supported its inclusion in pre-graduate dent…

Research on the Identification of Road Hypnosis Based on the Fusion Calculation of Dynamic Human-Vehicle Data.

Driver factors are the main cause of road traffic accidents. For the research of automotive active safety, an identification method for road hypnosis of a driver of a car with dynamic human-vehicle heterogeneous data fusion calculation is proposed. Road hypnosis is an unconscious driving state formed by the combination of external environmental factors and the psychological state of the car driver. When drivers fall into a state of road hypnosis, they cannot clearly perceive the surrounding environment and make various reactions in time to complete the driving task. The safety of humans and ca…

Hypnosis for unplanned procedural pain in the intensive care unit: the HYPIC randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Pain and anxiety are frequent among critically ill patients undergoing unplanned invasive procedures, and pharmacological pain relief is not always possible. Although hypnosis is widely used in planned painful procedures, studies are lacking in this specific setting. Thus, we aimed to assess whether hypnosis plus standard care reduced pain and anxiety in critically ill patients undergoing an unplanned invasive procedure in comparison to standard care. METHODS: The HYPIC trial was a randomized, single-blind, multicenter clinical trial of hypnosis during unplanned invasive procedure…

The Role of Medical Hypnosis in Alleviating Procedural Anxiety in Pediatric Interventional Radiology: A Pilot Study.

Pediatric interventional radiology procedures often use general anesthesia to manage pain and anxiety, but general anesthesia carries risks. Medical hypnosis, a noninvasive technique, has shown potential, though its application in pediatric interventional radiology is underexplored. This pilot study compared medical hypnosis and general anesthesia in pediatric interventional radiology, focusing on pre- and post-procedural anxiety and overall patient experience. The mean age of the medical hypnosis group was higher than the general anesthesia group. Post-procedural anxiety was significantly low…

Hypno-cardiac physiology: Aiming for an organised study of the physiological effects of hypnosis on the cardiovascular system.

Hypnosis is a promising tool in the management of various conditions, such as anxiety and chronic pain. Preliminary studies have shown that hypnosis can directly affect the cardiovascular system, as it increases parasympathetic activation and reduces sympathetic activity. However, the literature related to the effects of hypnosis on cardiovascular health is scarce, mainly due to misconceptions about hypnosis among researchers and medical professionals. This opinion paper examines the role that hypnosis may play in cardiovascular health, highlighting the physiological mechanisms behind it. The …

Hypnosis as an Adjunct to Topical Anesthesia for Awake Intubation in a Patient With Difficult Airway: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Awake intubation is often distressing for patients, particularly in cases of difficult airway anatomy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of successful awake fiber-optic intubation in a 69-year-old male with limited mouth opening due to previous ENT surgeries. Hypnosis was used alongside topical anesthesia and low-dose dexmedetomidine. The patient entered a relaxed state, and the intubation proceeded without pain, discomfort, or complications. CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates the feasibility of using hypnosis as a noninvasive adjunct to improve comfort during awake intubation.…

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Hypnosis in the Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Control Trial.

We investigated whether adding hypnosis to CBT (CBTH) improved treatment outcomes for MDD with a two-armed, parallel-treated, randomized-controlled trial using anonymous self-report and clinician-blinded assessments. Expectancy, credibility, and attitude to hypnosis were also examined. Participants (n = 66) were randomly allocated to 10-weekly sessions of group-based CBT or CBTH. LMM analyses of ITT and Completer data at post-treatment, six-month and 12-month follow-up showed that both treatments were probably efficacious but we did not find significant differences between them. Analyses of re…

Hypnosis Intervention for Sleep Disturbances in Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Randomized Pilot Study.

Poor sleep quality is highly prevalent among individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Further, poor sleep quality is associated with reduced quality of life, increased stress response, memory impairments, and progression to dementia among individuals with MCI. Pharmacological treatments for sleep have mixed efficacy and can lead to dependency. Therefore, alternatives to pharmacological treatments for improving sleep among individuals with MCI are needed. The present study reports on the feasibility of a non-pharmacological self-administered hypnosis intervention focused on sleep quali…

Exploring Variables Associated with the Effects of a Self-Administered Hypnosis Intervention for Improving Sleep Quality.

About two-thirds of college students rate their sleep as suboptimal which is associated with a variety of additional issues. Poor sleep is shown to follow certain pre-sleep cognitive activity that inhibits sleep onset and reduces sleep quality. Preliminary evidence suggests that a self-administered hypnosis intervention is feasible in improving sleep within a college student population, and the current study explores potential correlating variables to inform future mechanistic research. Twenty-two college students who self-reported poor sleep quality utilized a three-week self-administered hyp…

Hypnosis Associated with 3D Immersive Virtual Reality Technology in the Management of Pain: A Review of the Literature.

Hypnosis is well documented in the literature in the management of acute and chronic pain. Virtual reality (VR) is currently gaining credibility in the same fields as hypnosis for medical applications. Lately, the combination of hypnosis and VR was considered. The aim of this scoping review is to understand the current studied contexts and effects of virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) for the management of pain. We searched on PubMed, Taylor & Francis Online, and ProQuest databases with the following terms: "virtual reality," "3D," "hypnosis," and "pain". We included 8 studies that combined hypnos…

A longitudinal study of the relationship between aging and the duration of hexobarbital hypnosis in male CFN rats.

The duration of hexobarbital hypnosis was determined for individual male CFN rats at three month intervals over their total adult lifespan. The mean duration of hexobarbital hypnosis for the cohort linearly with advancing age. However, the sleeptimes for individual rats fell into one of four categories (gradual increase, terminal step increase, no change, or not possible to assign) when assigned as a function of duration of response to the barbiturate over the lifespan of the animals. These results suggest that the generally well-accepted increase in duration of drug response in aging animals …

Parafacial GABAergic neurone ablation induces behavioural resistance to volatile anaesthetic-induced hypnosis without reducing sleep.

BACKGROUND: It is hypothesised that general anaesthetics co-opt the neural circuits regulating endogenous sleep and wakefulness to produce hypnosis. To further probe this association, we focused on the GABAergic neurones of the parafacial zone (PZGABA), a brainstem site capable of promoting non-rapid eye movement sleep. METHODS: To determine whether PZ neurones are activated by a hypnotic dose of anaesthetics, c-Fos immunohistochemistry was performed. The behavioural and physiological contributions of PZGABA neurones to anaesthetic sensitivity were assessed in mice transfected with an adeno-a…

Association between well-characterized gene polymorphisms and the hypnosis response caused by sevoflurane-induced anaesthesia.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Sevoflurane is the most widely used volatile anaesthetic in clinical practice. It exhibits a hypnotic (unconsciousness) effect and causes a loss of reaction to noxious stimuli (immobility). However, to date, the mechanism of action of sevoflurane is poorly understood. In this study, we explored the effects of genetic variations on sevoflurane-induced hypnosis. METHODS: Sixty-six SNPs in 18 candidate genes were genotyped using MALDI-TOF MassARRAY in a discovery cohort containing 161 patients administered sevoflurane. Significant polymorphisms were assessed in a val…
