Human figure drawings of gender-problem children: a comparison to sibling, psychiatric, and normal controls.

The Draw-a-Person test was used to evaluate a number of questions regarding children referred for potential problems in their gender-identity development (N = 36). Sibling (N = 31), psychiatric (N = 23), and normal (N = 30) children served as comparison groups. The major results included the following: (1) The gender-referred children were more likely to draw an opposite-sex person when requested to "draw a person" than were the other three groups; (2) the gender-referred children who drew an opposite-sex person were more likely to play with opposite-sex toys and dress-up apparel on a free-pla

Gender-deviant boys compared with normal and clinical control boys.

The physical movement and social characteristics of effeminate behavior-problem, referred boys (N = 13) were compared with those of normal boys (N = 25) and boys (N = 12) referred for nongender problems. Parent reports, observer ratings, and videotapes were collected in a series of structured tasks. As expected, mothers described gender-problem sons as much more feminine than the other two groups in interests, activities, and mannerisms. Gender-problem sons were also seen as relatively inactive and introverted. Further, they were nonsignificantly lower than the clinical control boys in perceiv

Sex-role stereotyping in assessments of mental health made by psychiatric-mental health nurses.

To determine the amount of sex-role stereotyping in judgments of mental health made by psychiatric-mental health nurses, 150 of these nurses, divided into three equal groups, were asked to rate ideal states of mental health in males, females, and adults, respectively. An 83 percent return rate was obtained. Results showed: 1) there was less sex-role stereotyping than in a similar study reported in 1970 with other mental health professionals; 2) judgments of mental health closely resembled assessments of social desirability; 3) healthy females were rated closer to that which was considered desi

First do no more harm: female rape victims and the male counselor.

As the crisis of women who have been raped is more frequently brought to the attention of mental health workers, male counselors are increasingly being confronted with responsibility for aiding female victims. This paper considers the difficulties inherent in men fulfilling this therapeutic task, and discusses male misconceptions and responses that may undermine the efforts of well-meaning counselors.

[Participation of spouses of neurotic inpatients on the neurotic's views pertaining to their superiors and place of employment].

In a total of 72 sessions, 40 neurotic patients and their partners in marriage, who were interrogated separately, expressed their views of the superiors and employers of the patients. Statistical analyses showed that there was a great similarity between the comments made by the patients and their spouses. The basic psychodynamic process of identification was considered responsible for this. Six modes of identification with the neurotic partner were described. Also discussed by the author are the value and limits of "objective anamnesis". The need for including the entire family in the program

Integrating pain management in clinical practice.

There is much evidence to suggest that psychological and social issues are predictive of pain severity, emotional distress, work disability, and response to medical treatments among persons with chronic pain. Psychologists can play an important role in the identification of psychological and social dysfunction and in matching personal characteristics to effective interventions as part of a multidisciplinary approach to pain management, leading to a greater likelihood of treatment success. The assessment of different domains using semi-structured clinical interviews and standardized self-report

Family resources as resistance factors for psychological maladjustment in chronically ill and handicapped children.

The hypothesis that their psychological adjustment is related in part to resources present in their families was investigated in 153 children, age 4-16, who had one of five chronic physical disorders: juvenile diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obesity, spina bifida, or cerebral palsy. Their mothers completed standardized psychometric instruments to measure specific dimensions of family psychological and utilitarian resources and of child adjustment. Variation in children's psychological adjustment was related both to their psychological and utilitarian family resources. Psycholo

Recent stressful life events and identity development in emerging adults: An examination of within-person effects.

OBJECTIVE: To examine longitudinal associations among stressful life events and identity processess in emerging adults while accounting for within-person and between-person effects. BACKGROUND: Theoretical perspectives suggest that stressful life events may impact one's identity (i.e., coherent sense of self), but few studies have considered how changes in stressful life events are associated with changes within an individual's identity development over time (within-person effects). METHODS: Recent stressful life events (i.e., academic problems, friendship problems, romantic problems, and ti

What's race got to do with it? Factors contributing to self-change from cocaine use disorder among Black adults.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial number of people with substance use disorders recover without formal treatment, though we know little about the process of self-change among Black adults with cocaine use disorder (CUD) and whether racism contributes to the development of CUD and these adults' process of self-change. METHODS: The study team conducted qualitative interviews with 29 Black adults using a narrative and phenomenological approach. At the time of the interview, all participants met criteria for DSM-5 CUD prior to the past year but did not meet criteria for CUD in the past year and reporte

Criminal social identity and suicide ideation among Pakistani young prisoners.

PURPOSE: Suicidal behaviour is a common in prisoners, yet little is known about the factors that may protect against thoughts of ending one's life. The purpose of this paper is to specify and test a structural model to examine the relationship between three criminal social identity (CSI) dimensions (in-group affect, in-group ties, and cognitive centrality) and suicide ideation while controlling for period of confinement, age, criminal friends, and offense type (violent vs non-violent). DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Participants were 415 male juvenile offenders incarcerated in prisons in Khyber

A comparison of counselors and matched controls in maintaining different brain responses to the same stimuli under the self-perspective and the other-perspective.

To perceive the world from the perspective of their clients, counselors need to transpose themselves into the inner states of their clients when empathizing with them. Without a self-other distinction, the counselors may confuse their clients' experience with that of their own, which leads to personal distress and has detrimental effects on their well being. The present study recorded event-related potentials (ERP) of two groups of participants (counselors and matched controls) watching the same sets of unpleasant and neutral pictures from either the self-perspective or the other-perspective.

Shaping stereotypical behaviour through the discussion of social stereotypes.

In two studies, we demonstrate that small group discussions change the extent to which an activated stereotype affects performance in a relevant domain. In Study 1, female participants were asked why men are (or are not) better than them at maths. They generated their answers individually or through group discussion, and their subsequent maths performance was highest when they collectively challenged the stereotype and lowest when they collectively affirmed the stereotype. When participants affirmed the stereotype through discussion, they used more theories which supported the validity of the

Independent effects of colour on object identification and memory.

We examined the effects of colour on object identification and memory using a study-test priming procedure with a coloured-object decision task at test (i.e., deciding whether an object is correctly coloured). Objects were selected to have a single associated colour and were either correctly or incorrectly coloured. In addition, object shape and colour were either spatially integrated (i.e., colour fell on the object surface) or spatially separated (i.e., colour formed the background to the object). Transforming the colour of an object from study to test (e.g., from a yellow banana to a purple

Masculinity-femininity as a national characteristic and its relationship with national agoraphobic fear levels: Fodor's sex role hypothesis revitalized.

Hofstede's dimension of national culture termed Masculinity-Femininity [. Cultures and organizations: software of the mind. London: McGraw-Hill] is proposed to be of relevance for understanding national-level differences in self-assessed agoraphobic fears. This prediction is based on the classical work of Fodor [. In: V. Franks & V. Burtle (Eds.), Women in therapy: new psychotherapies for a changing society. New York: Brunner/Mazel]. A unique data set comprising 11 countries (total N=5491 students) provided the opportunity of scrutinizing this issue. It was hypothesized and found that national

Relationship between identification with the role of sport fan and trait aggression.

The current research was designed to test the hypothesis that there is no significant relationship between people's identification of themselves as sport fans and trait aggression. 70 participants were asked to complete the Sport Fandom Questionnaire to assess their fandom and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory to assess their trait aggression. As expected, no significant relationship between fandom and aggression was found.

Women who excel on a spatial task: proposed genetic and environmental factors.

A "bent twig" model which incorporates Annett's genetic handedness theory with an environmental component predicted characteristics of college women likely to excel on a mental rotation task. Those likely to have the necessary combination of genetic potential and prior experiences are right-handed women with non-right-handed relatives who rate themselves high in spatial experiences. This subgroup significantly outperformed all other groups of right-handed women on the Vandenberg Mental Rotation Test. This study provides support for the view that family handedness and spatial experiences are im

The development of gender-related behavior in females following prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES).

Animal research has shown that diethylstilbestrol (DES) present during the sensitive developmental periods of the hypothalamus and adjacent areas of the brain affects the development of sex-dimorphic brain structures and subsequent behavior. To test for corresponding behavioral effects in humans, 30 women with a history of prenatal DES exposure were contrasted with 30 unexposed women who had been referred to the same clinic for a colposcopic examination because of an abnormal Pap smear. Gender-role behavior of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood was assessed by means of a semistructured inte

George Beard and Lydia Pinkham: gender, class, and nerves in late 19th century America.

A historical comparison of the careers of George Beard, medical doctor, and Lydia Pinkham, feminist and patent medicine maker, demonstrates the complex social nature of the experience of nerves among late 19th century women. Special attention is paid to the roles played by changing gender and class ideologies in Pinkham's and Beard's theories of nerves during the period from the 1870s to World War I. A comparison of contemporary anthropological and historical studies of gender and nerves leads to the conclusion that nerves, as a female complaint, takes hold of the popular and medical imaginati

Parental and interpersonal relationships of transsexual and masculine and feminine homosexual men.

A group of transsexual and homosexual men was examined using the Leary Test as a psycho-sociogram, and findings were compared to those from a group of heterosexual men. It was found that the fathers of homosexuals and transsexuals were more hostile and less dominant than the fathers of the control group and hence less desirable identification models. The average mothers of transsexuals were close to the ideal person in our culture, e.g., dominant, strong and kindly, and thus an imposing identification model. Heterosexual men and transsexuals, in their behavior towards their wives, on the avera
