Neural Mechanisms of Attentional Switching Between Pain and a Visual Illusion Task: A Laser Evoked Potential Study.

Previous studies demonstrated that pain induced by a noxious stimulus during a distraction task is affected by both stimulus-driven and goal-directed processes which interact and change over time. The purpose of this exploratory study was to analyse associations of aspects of subjective pain experience and engagement with the distracting task with attention-sensitive components of noxious laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) on a single-trial basis. A laser heat stimulus was applied to the dorsum of the left hand while subjects either viewed the Rubin vase-face illusion (RVI), or focused on their pa

Determinants of the direction illusion: motion speed and dichoptic presentation interact to reveal systematic individual differences in sign.

When two fields of dots with different directions of movement are presented in tandem, the perceived direction of one is biased by the presence of the other. Although this ‘‘direction illusion’’ typically involves repulsion, with an exaggeration of the perceived angular difference in direction between the dot fields, attraction effects, where the perceived difference is reduced, have also been found under certain presentation conditions. Earlier literature has been inconsistent, and there is debate surrounding the nature of the interactions that facilitate the direction illusion, as well as wh

Contributions of visible persistence and perceptual set to the flash-lag effect: focusing on flash onset abolishes the illusion.

Among other theories, visible persistence has been suggested to explain the flash-lag effect (FLE). According to this account, the flash is not compared to the moving object at its perceived onset, but at a later time while it is still subjectively visible. Therefore, it is reported to lag the moving object. We show that observers' perceptual set determines whether the persisting image of the flash or its onset is used to judge relative position. Spontaneously, observers use the persisting image, such that a flash-lag results. When forced to focus on the onset of the flash because flashes and

[Visual illusion with 90-degree forward rotation on the sagittal plane due to acute paramedian pontine infarction].

We report an unusual and dramatic type of visual illusion, a 90-degree forward rotation of vision on the sagittal plain in 2 cases of acute paramedian pontine infarction. At initial neurological examination, they were both alert and well-oriented. The one case had slight right lateral gaze palsy, left motor paresis and hallucinose pédunculaire, and the other case had slight right gaze palsy, right Horner's syndrome, slight left sensory deficit and left limb ataxia. They complained that they felt as if they themselves, the bed, the floor and the ceiling were standing vertically, although actual

An acceleration illusion caused by underestimation of stimulus velocity during pursuit eye movements: Aubert-Fleischl revisited.

When the eyes pursue a fixation point that sweeps across a moving background pattern, and the fixation point is suddenly made to stop, the ongoing motion of the background pattern seems to accelerate to a higher velocity. Experiment I showed that this acceleration illusion is not caused by the sudden change in (i) the relative velocity between background and fixation point, (ii) the velocity of the retinal image of the background pattern, or (iii) the motion of the retinal image of the rims of the CRT screen on which the experiment was carried out. In experiment II the magnitude of the illusio

Somatosensory motion after-effect following earth-horizontal rotation about the Z-axis: a new illusion.

During rotation about the Z-axos while recumbent one is exposed to a changing pattern of pressure cues over the body surface. If the body is only loosely padded in the experimental apparatus, then apparent motion of part of the body surface may be experienced sometime after rotation has been terminated. This somatosensory motion aftereffect of opposite sign is temporarily abolished if one looks at the affected body area, but is again re-experienced when the gaze is shifted elswhere. The similarity of this motion aftereffect to those contingent on vestibular and visual stimulation is discussed.

Shattering the Amyloid Illusion: The Microbial Enigma of Alzheimer's Disease Pathogenesis-From Gut Microbiota and Viruses to Brain Biofilms.

For decades, Alzheimer's Disease (AD) research has focused on the amyloid cascade hypothesis, which identifies amyloid-beta (Aβ) as the primary driver of the disease. However, the consistent failure of Aβ-targeted therapies to demonstrate efficacy, coupled with significant safety concerns, underscores the need to rethink our approach to AD treatment. Emerging evidence points to microbial infections as environmental factors in AD pathoetiology. Although a definitive causal link remains unestablished, the collective evidence is compelling. This review explores unconventional perspectives and eme

Variations in Oppel-Kundt Illusion Strength Among Depressive and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder Groups: Impact of Benzodiazepine Use.

Background and Objectives: The Oppel-Kundt (O-K) geometric optical illusion has been studied among people with mental disorders to understand the differences in their visual perception. Earlier studies were mainly focused on patients with schizophrenia, while less is known about patients with depression and the influence of medication use. The objectives were to compare illusion manifestation for schizophrenia, depression, and to evaluate possible differences depending on drug use. Materials and Methods: The stimuli consisted of three horizontally arranged dots, which were considered as termin

Cross-modal size-contrast illusion: Acoustic increases in intensity and bandwidth modulate haptic representation of object size.

Changes in the retinal size of stationary objects provide a cue to the observer's motion in the environment: Increases indicate the observer's forward motion, and decreases backward motion. In this study, a series of images each comprising a pair of pine-tree figures were translated into auditory modality using sensory substitution software. Resulting auditory stimuli were presented in an ascending sequence (i.e. increasing in intensity and bandwidth compatible with forward motion), descending sequence (i.e. decreasing in intensity and bandwidth compatible with backward motion), or in a scramb

Disruptions in neural connectivity associated with reduced susceptibility to a depth inversion illusion in youth at ultra high risk for psychosis.

Patients with psychosis exhibit a reduced susceptibility to depth inversion illusions (DII) in which a physically concave surface is perceived as convex (e.g., the hollow mask illusion). Here, we examined the extent to which lessened susceptibility to DII characterized youth at ultra high risk (UHR) for psychosis. In this study, 44 UHR participants and 29 healthy controls judged the apparent convexity of face-like human masks, two of which were concave and the other convex. One of the concave masks was painted with realistic texture to enhance the illusion; the other was shown without such tex…

Personality correlates of reporting Chinese words from the Deutsch "high-low" word illusion by Chinese-speaking people.

OBJECTIVE: When English-speaking people listen to the Deutsch "high-low" word illusion, they report hearing English words. Whether Chinese-speaking people report Chinese words when listening to the illusion, or whether any reported words might be correlated with personality traits as previous investigations have demonstrated for listening to music in other cultures, is open to question. The present study aimed to address this. METHODS: A total of 308 right-handed, healthy volunteers (177 women and 131 men) were given the illusion test and asked to answer the Zuckerman-Kuhlman personality ques

Electrophysiological correlates of the composite face illusion: disentangling perceptual and decisional components of holistic face processing in the human brain.

When the bottom halves of two faces differ, people's behavioral judgment of the identical top halves of those faces is impaired: they report that the top halves are different, and/or take more time than usual to provide a response. This behavioral measure is known as the composite face effect (CFE) and has traditionally been taken as evidence that faces are perceived holistically. Recently, however, it has been claimed that this effect is driven almost entirely by decisional, rather than perceptual, factors (Richler, Gauthier, Wenger, & Palmeri, 2008). To disentangle the contribution of percep

Age-Related Differences in Perception of the Rotating Snakes Illusion Among Young and Older Adults with Normal Visual Acuity.

PURPOSE: Visual illusions are utilized to elucidate mechanism of visual information processing. For example, the Rotating Snakes illusion creates the illusory perception of motion when viewing a static image. This study investigated the difference in perception of illusory rotation between younger and older adults with normal visual acuity. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The participants included 105 younger adults (mean age: 23.7 years) and 100 older adults (mean age: 74.2 years). Each participant was presented with the Rotating Snakes illusion, then asked to respond whether they perceived the sn…

New insights and a computational model for understanding induced motion revealed through novel variants of the Flying Bluebottle Illusion.

The Flying Bluebottle Illusion is a compelling example of how the perceived trajectory of moving objects can be greatly influenced by other motion sources in the visual scene. In this article, we present a series of simplified variants of the Flying Bluebottle Illusion in which the true motion of a target is a circular orbit around a central point. However, when a similar but offset orbiting motion trajectory is added to a set of surrounding inducers, the perceived trajectory of the target is drastically altered in both extent and direction. In other words, the perceived orbiting motion of the

Acute effects of local vibration inducing tonic vibration reflex or illusion of movement on maximal wrist force production.

Local vibration (LV) mainly stimulates primary afferents (Ia) and can induce a tonic vibration reflex (TVR) and an illusion of movement. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of these two phenomena on maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) capacity. LV (80 Hz) was applied to the wrist flexor muscles in two randomized experiments for 6 min. LV conditions were adjusted to promote either TVR (visual focus on the vibrated wrist) or ILLUSION [hand hidden, visual focus on electromyographic activity of the flexor carpi radialis muscle (FCR)]. Mechanical and electromyographic (EMG) responses

The third-person perspective full-body illusion induced by visual-tactile stimulation in virtual reality for stroke patients.

This paper attempts to induce the third-person perspective full body illusion (3PP-FBI) with virtual reality (VR) in stroke patients. Nineteen individuals with stroke were recruited. The 3PP-FBI induction method, which was well-established in healthy individuals, using synchronous visual-tactile stimulation on one body part was used. Questionnaire scores and proprioceptive drift values were collected under different conditions for characterizing the induced 3PP-FBI. Results showed that synchronous visual-tactile stimulation of a single body part (back or upper limb) was sufficient to elicit 3P
