Positional and surface area asymmetry of the human cerebral cortex.

Previous studies of cortical asymmetry have relied mainly on voxel-based morphometry (VBM), or manual segmentation of regions of interest. This study uses fully automated, surface-based techniques to analyse position and surface area asymmetry for the mid-surfaces of 112 right-handed subjects' cortical hemispheres from a cohort of young adults. Native space measurements of local surface area asymmetry and vertex position asymmetry were calculated from surfaces registered to a previously validated hemisphere-unbiased surface-based template. Our analysis confirms previously identified hemispheri

Quantitative ultrasound in the assessment of skeletal status.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is a non-invasive technique for the investigation of bone tissue in several pathologies and clinical conditions, especially in the field of osteoporosis. The versatility of the technique, its low cost and lack of ionising radiation have led to the diffusion of this method worldwide. Several studies have been conducted in the last years to investigate the potential of QUS in multiple areas with promising results; the technique has been applied in the prediction of osteoporotic fractures, in monitoring therapies, in the investigation of secondary osteoporosis, in pa

Multi-level semi-supervised GAN enables accurate segmentation of breast ultrasound images.

Ultrasound imaging is a crucial modality for breast cancer diagnosis, with lesion segmentation being an essential component of computer-aided diagnosis systems. However, the high cost and effort associated with pixel-level annotation significantly hinder the advancement of breast ultrasound (BUS) image segmentation algorithms. In this paper, we propose a multi-level semi-supervised generative adversarial network (MLSS-GAN) that incorporates a generator and a novel multi-level classifier acting as the discriminator. While some previous approaches have incorporated multi-level adversarial learni

DRSeg: a weakly supervised framework for breast ultrasound image segmentation.

Automatic segmentation of breast tumors in ultrasound images can assist physicians in making accurate and effective decisions. However, fully supervised learning methods typically require large amounts of pixel-level annotations, which are often difficult to obtain. Weakly supervised segmentation using image-level labels offers a promising alternative, but generating high-quality pseudo-segmentation labels remains a major challenge. In this study, we propose DRSeg, a weakly supervised segmentation framework for breast ultrasound (BUS) images that explicitly addresses the variability of pseudo-

KPIs 2024 challenge: Advancing glomerular segmentation from patch- to slide-level.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health issue, affecting over 10% of the population and causing significant mortality. While kidney biopsy remains the gold standard for CKD diagnosis and treatment, the lack of comprehensive benchmarks for kidney pathology segmentation hinders progress in the field. To address this, we organized the Kidney Pathology Image Segmentation (KPIs) Challenge, introducing a dataset that incorporates preclinical rodent models of CKD with over 10,000 annotated glomeruli from 50 Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS)-stained whole slide images. As a preclinical benchmar

Integrated deep learning model for multi-label retinal disease diagnosis.

The multi-label retinal disease classification is a difficult one since fundus images might comprise many co-occurring abnormalities, extreme in relation to the class, as well as significant lesion appearance variation. In order to deal with this issue, this paper suggests a combined deep learning architecture to diagnose retinal diseases automatically with the help of the MuReD dataset, which includes 2208 fundus images that were gathered at ARIA, STARE, and RFMiD and reformulated with 19 retinal disease labels, excluding the non-diagnostic category of OTHERS. The proposed model is based on a

Enhanced gallbladder cancer detection via active and self-supervised learning integration: Innovating B-ultrasound image analysis.

Gallbladder cancer, a common yet often under diagnosed malignancy, is typically characterized by late detection and a poor prognosis. The rise of deep learning has introduced new methods for its early identification through B-ultrasound imaging, but there are still challenges of inefficient data labeling and feature extraction. This paper introduces a novel classification algorithm, ASGBC, intended to tackle related challenges in diagnosing gallbladder cancer using B-ultrasound images. Firstly, we combine active learning with self-supervised learning to decrease the reliance on labeled data. S

Recognition of diabetic retinopathy and macular edema using deep learning.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are both serious eye conditions associated with diabetes and if left untreated, and they can lead to permanent blindness. Traditional methods for screening these conditions rely on manual image analysis by experts, which can be time-consuming and costly due to the scarcity of such experts. To overcome the aforementioned challenges, we present the Modified CornerNet approach with DenseNet-100. This system aims to localize and classify lesions associated with DR and DME. To train our model, we first generate annotations for input samples

CytoGAN: Unpaired staining transfer by structure preservation for cytopathology image analysis.

With the development of digital pathology, deep learning is increasingly being applied to endometrial cell morphology analysis for cancer screening. And cytology images with different staining may degrade the performance of these analysis algorithms. To address the impact of staining patterns, many strategies have been proposed and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) images have been transferred to other staining styles. However, none of the existing methods are able to generate realistic cytological images with preserved cellular layout, and many important clinical structural information is lost. To

Application of computer-generated images to train pattern recognition used in semiquantitative immunohistochemistry scoring.

This study aimed to clarify whether the pattern recognition involved in scoring proliferation fractions can be trained by abstract computerized images of virtual tissues. Twenty computer-generated images with randomly distributed blue or red dots were scored by 12 probands (all co-workers or collaborators of the Institute of Pathology, University of Bonn). Afterward, the probands underwent a training phase during which they received an immediate feedback on the actual rate of positivity after each image. Finally, the initial testing series was rescored. In a second round with 15 different prob

Anatomical structure segmentation from early fetal ultrasound sequences using global pollination CAT swarm optimizer-based Chan-Vese model.

The structure of an early fetal heart provides essential information for the diagnosis of fetus defects. Accurate segmentation of anatomical structure is a major challenging task because of the small size, low signal-to-noise ratio, and rapid movement of the ultrasound images. In recent years, active contour methods have found applications to ultrasound image segmentation. The familiar region-based Chan-Vese (RCV) model is a strong and flexible technique that is able to segment many types of images compared to other active contours. However, the solution trapping in local minima is the main dr

Novel Cardiac Coordinate Modeling System for Three-Dimensional Quantification of Inflow Cannula Malposition of HeartMate II LVADs.

Optimal function of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) depends on proper alignment of the inflow cannula (IC). Quantitative guidelines for IC angulation are lacking because of variation in cardiac geometry and difficulty in analyzing three-dimensional (3D) cannula orientation relative to the left ventricle (LV). Based on contrast-enhanced computed tomography images from five normal and five clinically malpositioned IC cases in patients with HeartMate II LVADs, we developed a method for 3D quantification of IC malpositioning. Using Mimics image software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium), the

Splenomegaly Segmentation on Multi-Modal MRI Using Deep Convolutional Networks.

The findings of splenomegaly, abnormal enlargement of the spleen, is a non-invasive clinical biomarker for liver and spleen diseases. Automated segmentation methods are essential to efficiently quantify splenomegaly from clinically acquired abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. However, the task is challenging due to: 1) large anatomical and spatial variations of splenomegaly; 2) large inter- and intra-scan intensity variations on multi-modal MRI; and 3) limited numbers of labeled splenomegaly scans. In this paper, we propose the Splenomegaly Segmentation Network (SS-Net) to introd

Simulation-Informed Evaluation of Microvascular Parameter Mapping for Diffusion MR Imaging of Solid Tumours.

PURPOSE: We aim to inform the design of new diffusion MRI (dMRI) approaches for microvasculature quantification that enhance the biological specificity of imaging towards cancer. METHODS: We adopted simulation-informed modelling of the vascular dMRI signal. We synthesised signals from 1500 synthetic vascular networks, for a variety of protocols (flow-compensated [FC], non-compensated [NC], hybrid), featuring different b $$ b $$ samplings and diffusion times. We estimated the number of independent, recoverable signal degrees of freedom in presence of noise (signal-to-noise ratio of 5), and r

Breaking error coupling via divergent-convergent coordination for semi-supervised medical image segmentation.

This study addresses the challenges of Error Coupling and model homogenization that commonly arise in dual-model collaborative learning for semi-supervised medical image segmentation by proposing a Divergent-Convergent Framework (DCF). The core innovation of this framework lies in abandoning the traditional blind pursuit of strong prediction consistency and instead dynamically quantifying the confidence and disagreement between the two models through a Guidance Mask (GM). In regions of high confidence and low disagreement, a Convergence Stabilization Mechanism is applied to reinforce the learn

MIMI-ONET: Multi-Modal image augmentation via Butterfly Optimized neural network for Huntington DiseaseDetection.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a chronic neurodegenerative ailment that affects cognitive decline, motor impairment, and psychiatric symptoms. However, the existing HD detection methods are struggle with limited annotated datasets that restricts their generalization performance. This research work proposes a novel MIMI-ONET for primary detection of HD using augmented multi-modal brain MRI images. The two-dimensional stationary wavelet transform (2DSWT) decomposes the MRI images into different frequency wavelet sub-bands. These sub-bands are enhanced with Contract Stretching Adaptive Histogram Eq

Tractography in the presence of multiple sclerosis lesions.

Accurate anatomical localisation of specific white matter tracts and the quantification of their tract-specific microstructural damage in conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) can contribute to a better understanding of symptomatology, disease evolution and intervention effects. Diffusion MRI-based tractography is being used increasingly to segment white matter tracts as regions-of-interest for subsequent quantitative analysis. Since MS lesions can interrupt the tractography algorithm's tract reconstruction, clinical studies frequently resort to atlas-based approaches, which are convenien

Deep visual detection system for oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is a widespread and aggressive malignancy where early and accurate detection is essential for improving patient outcomes. Traditional diagnostic methods relying on histopathological examination are often time-consuming, resource-intensive, and susceptible to subjective interpretation. Moreover, inter-observer variability can further compromise diagnostic consistency, leading to delays in timely intervention. In recent years, advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer-aided diagnostic systems have shown transformative potential in medic

SIB-MIL: Sparsity-Induced Bayesian Neural Network for Robust Multiple Instance Learning on Whole Slide Image Analysis.

Multiple instance learning (MIL) has shown prominent success in analyzing whole slide histopathology images (WSIs). However, existing MIL methods often suffer from overfitting due to weak supervision and the "needle-in-a-haystack" nature of WSIs. Additionally, most deterministic approaches lack a mechanism for uncertainty quantification. While Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) have emerged as a promising solution to mitigate overfitting and enable uncertainty estimation by imposing prior constraints, commonly used Gaussian BNNs exhibit unstable posterior predictive distributions under weak super
