Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae strain INT1 was isolated from the blood of a young child with clinical signs of meningitis following acute otitis media. The increasing incidence of lymphomas is related to environmental factors including occupational exposures and HIV infection. Molecular and immunologic studies have recently defined some new clinico-pathologic entities such as mantle cell lymphoma and lymphoma of mucosal-associated lymphatic tissue. Four infants presented with the combination of food allergy, transient hypogammaglobulinemia (THI), and elevated serum IgE levels. Trichomonas vaginalis parasitizes in human genitourinary tract. The protozoon adhering to target cell plays a critical role in its contact-dependent cytotoxicity. The enzymes synthesized by T.voginalis can hurt vaginalis epithelial cells (VECs) directly. The focal immune reaction in the location parasitized by the parasite may provide an immunologic protection. Meanwhile, inflammatory factors and immune cells may aggravate the situation. In general, the T. vaginalis-induced contact-dependent cytotoxicity is a result of the involvement of some molecular and chemical factors.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), the first autoimmune disease to be recognized, is a manifestation of defective immune regulation. Melanoma demonstrates considerable biological heterogeneity and is associated with several routes of dissemination including lymphatic and hematogenous. Locoregional control via surgery may improve outcomes for patients with limited lymphatic metastases. Once stage IV disease is diagnosed, clinical outcomes are determined by molecular and/or immunologic factors and identification of tumor/microenvironmental features correlating with distant metastases is critical for future prognostic stratification.

Mixed cryoglobulinemia, renal syndromes, lymphoproliferative disorders, Sjögren syndrome, porphyria cutanea tarda, and neuropathies are all strongly associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Diabetes, thyroid disease, and the presence of autoantibodies in the serum are also linked to HCV, but less strongly. The pathophysiologic basis for most of these syndromes seems immunologic. Cirrhosis and chronic HCV infection seem to be risk factors.

African Americans are more likely to develop end-stage renal disease than other racial groups. Although transplantation is optimal therapy for most end-stage renal disease patients, many potential black recipients do not have ready access to cadaveric kidneys. Animal models have been instrumental in investigating otitis media. Experimental models have allowed for focused research on how such factors as eustachian tube dysfunction and microbial infection contribute to the pathogenesis of otitis media. Antibacterial therapy and immunologic prophylaxis have been developed using these models. Current research is aimed at generating an objective index of middle ear inflammation for guiding patient management.

It has been hypothesized that vaginitis emphysematosa is a manifestation of trichomonal or Gardnerella infection. In support of this etiologic concept, four cases of the disorder are described showing the apparent curative effect of treating the associated infection. The linkage of these and other reported cases with conditions of impaired immunity suggests that immunologic factors are involved in the pathogenesis.

To assess immunologic factors in the pathogenesis of idiopathic minimal-change nephrotic syndrome (INS), serum immunoglobulin concentrations were measured in 37 children with this syndrome and compared with those found in 36 with nephrotic syndrome secondary to chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN). Exacerbations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may be brought about by a number of factors, including stress, surgery, or infection. By interacting with immunologic mediators or by producing immune complexes, infections may exacerbate underlying autoimmune diseases such as SLE.
