Multi-impulsivity among bulimic patients in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: Studies in Western world patients suggest the possible existence of a subgroup of patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) who display multiple problems with impulsivity, such as suicidal attempts. We assessed impulsive behaviors among BN patients in Japan to discuss them crossculturally. METHOD: Impulsive behaviors in 64 BN patients were assessed and multi-impulsivity (MI) was defined according to the definition proposed by Fichter, Quadflieg, and Rief (Psychological Medicine, 24, 591-604,1994). RESULTS: Nineteen patients (30%) met the definition of MI. BN patients with MI had more sev…

Sleepiness and impulsivity: Findings in non-treatment seeking young adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although inadequate sleep has been linked to problematic behaviors, such as poor impulse control and emotion dysregulation, little research interest has been the role of sleep and sleep deprivation on impulsive behaviors in young adults. To further examine the relationship of sleepiness to impulsivity and impulsive behaviors, this study was designed to collect data on sleepiness, and a range of impulse control disorders and cognitive measures. METHODS: Young non-treatment-seeking adults were recruited from two US cities and completed a screening form for sleepiness, along…

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome with and without obsessive-compulsive disorder compared with obsessive-compulsive disorder without tics: which symptoms discriminate?

Stereotyped repetitive behaviors occur in Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome (GTS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The present study was undertaken to compare the distribution of obsessive-compulsive and Tourette-related impulsive behaviors in GTS with (+) OCD, GTS without (-) OCD, tic-free OCD, and control subjects. Fourteen GTS + OCD, 18 GTS-OCD, 21 OCD-tic, and 29 control subjects were evaluated using a semistructured interview designed to assess GTS and OCD-related repetitive behaviors. Each reported item was evaluated on the presence of anxiety and goal-directedness. This informati…

Examining the Relevance of Hostility for the Dual Systems Model: Predictive Power and Moderating Effects on Aggressive Behavior.

Imbalance in the development of impulse control and sensation-seeking is relevant for understanding the impact of cognition on antisocial behavior during adolescence and emerging adulthood. The role that hostility plays in the impact of impulse control and sensation-seeking on aggressive behavior remains understudied. The present study sought to address this gap in the literature by examining hostility as a moderator of the relationship between dual systems imbalance and aggressive behavior. All 11 waves of the Pathways to Desistance data were analyzed. Generalized estimating equations were us

Impulsive prepotent actions and tics in Tourette disorder underpinned by a common neural network.

Tourette disorder (TD), which is characterized by motor and vocal tics, is not in general considered as a product of impulsivity, despite a … ce nor structural or functional correlates were related to a psychometric measure of impulsivity or impulsive behaviors in general. Overall, the results suggest that waiting impulsivity in TD was related to tic severity, to functional connectivity of orbito-frontal cortex with caudate nucleus and to structural changes within limbic areas.

Motor impulsivity but not risk-related impulsive choice is associated to drug intake and drug-primed relapse.

INTRODUCTION: Motor impulsivity and risk-related impulsive choice have been proposed as vulnerability factors for drug abuse, due to their high prevalence in drug abusers. However, how these two facets of impulsivity are associated to drug abuse remains unclear. Here, we investigated the predictive value of both motor impulsivity and risk-related impulsive choice on characteristics of drug abuse including initiation and maintenance of drug use, motivation for the drug, extinction of drug-seeking behavior following drug discontinuation and, finally, propensity to relapse. METHODS: We used the

Impulsiveness, overactivity, and poorer sustained attention improve by chronic treatment with low doses of l-amphetamine in an animal model of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

BACKGROUND: ADHD is currently defined as a cognitive/behavioral developmental disorder where all clinical criteria are behavioral. Overactivity, impulsiveness, and inattentiveness are presently regarded as the main clinical symptoms. There is no biological marker, but there is considerable evidence to suggest that ADHD behavior is associated with poor dopaminergic and noradrenergic modulation of neuronal circuits that involve the frontal lobes. The best validated animal model of ADHD, the Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat (SHR), shows pronounced overactivity, impulsiveness, and deficient sustaine

Posting Sexually Explicit Images or Videos of Oneself Online Is Associated With Impulsivity and Hypersexuality but Not Measures of Psychopathology in a Sample of US Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Sending sexually explicit text messages ("sexting") is prevalent among US adults; however, the mental health correlates of this behavior among adults have not been studied adequately. Furthermore, there are few studies examining the related but distinct behavior of posting sexually explicit photos or videos of oneself online (posting sexual images [PSI]) and the mental health correlates of this behavior. AIM: To examine associations between sexting, PSI, impulsivity, hypersexuality, and measures of psychopathology. METHODS: Using a national convenience sample of 283 US post-dep

Development of a cortical delay discounting assay: a potential biomarker of externalizing disorders.

BACKGROUND: People who tend to impulsively choose smaller, sooner rewards over larger, later rewards are at increased risk for addiction and psychiatric disorders. A neurobiological measure of the tendency to overvalue immediate gratification could facilitate the study of individuals who are susceptible to these mental disorders. The objective of this research was to develop a cortical assay of impulsive choice for immediate rewards. METHODS: A cortex-based assay of impulsive choice was developed using 1105 healthy adults from the Human Connectome Project, and then cross-validated in two inde

Reward and executive control network resting-state functional connectivity is associated with impulsivity during reward-based decision making for cocaine users.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine addiction is related to impulsive decision making that is mediated by brain circuitry involved in reward processing and executive functions, such as cognitive control and attentional salience. Resting-state functional connectivity between reward and executive control circuitry is altered among cocaine users, with concomitant deficits in impulsivity and learning. Prior research has examined how select brain regions interact to influence impulsive decision making for drug users; however, research examining interactions between large-scale brain networks and impulsive behavior…

Precontemplated and impulsive suicide attempts among individuals with alcohol dependence.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol dependence confers risk for suicidal behavior. Some suicide attempts are precontemplated, whereas other attempts are impulsive. The purpose of this study was to compare characteristics and correlates of impulsive and precontemplated suicide attempts. METHOD: Data were derived from analysis of The Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA), which is a six-site family pedigree study of individuals in treatment for alcoholism (probands), relatives of probands, and control families. Subjects in the analysis were age 18 years or older with a diagnosis of current al

Delay discounting differentiates pre-adolescents at high and low risk for substance use disorders based on family history.

BACKGROUND: Youth with family histories of substance use disorders (FH+) are at increased risk for developing substance use disorders relative to those without such histories (FH-). FH+ individuals show deficits in impulse control that parallel those in individuals with substance use disorders. Elucidating how specific components of impulse control are affected in FH+ pre-adolescents would advance our understanding of how deficits in impulse control relate to risk of substance use disorders. METHOD: A total of 386 children (305 FH+, 81 FH-; ages 10-12) with no histories of regular alcohol or

Frequency of nonsuicidal self-injury is associated with impulsive decision-making during criticism.

Research indicates that nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is associated with impulsive traits, but not impulsive behavior on laboratory tasks, even in the context of negative mood. However, previous studies may not have induced forms of negative affect most relevant to NSSI. For example, evidence implicates both self-criticism and feeling criticized by others in NSSI engagement. We conducted two studies examining whether negative mood related to criticism increases impulsive decision-making among individuals with NSSI histories, using a gambling task embedded with auditory critical comments; part…

Developmental psychopathology and neurobiology of aggression.

The aim of this paper is to clarify how neural mechanisms at the molecular level, specifically the serotonergic (5-HT) system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis system (HPA) in conjunction with early life stress may contribute to the emergence of aggression, self-directed and otherwise, in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Chronic dysregulation of these biological systems, which function to regulate stress and emotion, may potentiate the development of impulsive aggression in borderline personality conditions. Our central premise in this paper is that brain development, stress re
