Impaired Driving Among Rural Appalachian Women in the Year Following Incarceration.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the known risks associated with substance use following incarceration, no studies have examined substance-impaired driving as a post-incarceration health risk behavior in rural Appalachia. PURPOSE: The present study examined differences by impaired driving following incarceration and identified predictors of impaired driving in sample of rural Appalachian women with a history of drug use and risky sex. METHODS: Women (N=340) from three rural Appalachian jails completed a baseline interview in jail and follow-up interviews at six and 12 months post-release. Interview que

Youth Incarceration in Adult Facilities and Mental Health in Early Adulthood.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between youth incarceration in adult correctional facilities and mental health in early adulthood. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representative data from 1997 through 2019 (N = 8,961) using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997. An ordinary least squares regression model using inverse probability weights was used to assess the influence of youth incarceration in an adult facility on average mental health scores from age 18 to 37. RESULTS: Respondents incarcerated in an adult facility as a youth had poorer average mental health than those not he

Mitigating COVID-19 Burden in People Experiencing Incarceration: A Systematic Review.

People experiencing incarceration (PEI) have poorer COVID-19 clinical outcomes compared with the general population. Many interventions were implemented in incarceration facilities to mitigate the burden of COVID-19. This systematic review seeks to analyze the effectiveness of these interventions. Twenty-two studies were included. Reduction of the incarcerated population/interfacility transfers, cohorting of new and infectious incarcerated people, mass asymptomatic testing (despite often low uptake), hygiene measures, and prioritization of PEI in vaccine policy had some evidence of effectivene

Juvenile Incarceration in an Adult Facility and Violent Victimization During Adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: A growing body of research indicates that being incarcerated in an adult jail or prison as a juvenile can elevate one's exposure to adverse childhood experiences, including violent and sexual victimization and neglect, and may lead to several long-term difficulties. This study investigates the relationship between being confined in an adult jail or prison as a minor and experiencing violent victimization as an adult. METHODS: Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-1997 cohort were used in the study. Subjects were between 12 and 33 years of age (N = 8526; 51% male, 4

Reexploring Female Pathways to Incarceration: Assessing the Role of Mental Illness.

The pathways framework represents an emerging body of work that emphasizes gendered-based influences on crime and incarceration. To date, studies on female pathways often minimize or exclude the role of mental illness. The current study employs Life Course Theory and the use of Life History Calendar to examine the pathways of a sample of 15 female prison inmates diagnosed with serious and persistent mental health conditions. Findings indicate that mental illness carried criminogenic risk throughout the life course, with crucial transitions of risk leading these women toward long term incarcera

Incarceration status at buprenorphine initiation and OUD treatment outcomes during pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a leading cause of pregnancy-associated deaths. OUD treatment with buprenorphine (BUP) reduces overdose risk and improves perinatal outcomes. Incarceration can be a barrier to receipt of OUD treatment during pregnancy and postpartum. The objective of this study was to examine differences in BUP continuation at delivery by patients' incarceration status at the time of BUP initiation. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a retrospective cohort study of pregnant patients with OUD who delivered at an academic medical center and initiated BUP between

Addressing Emergency Department Care for Patients Experiencing Incarceration: A Narrative Review.

Patients experiencing incarceration face a multitude of healthcare disparities. These patients are disproportionately affected by a variety of chronic medical conditions. Patients who are incarcerated often remain shackled throughout their hospital course, experience bias from members of the healthcare team, and have many barriers to privacy given the omnipresence of corrections officers. Despite this, many physicians report little formal training on caring for this unique patient population. In this narrative review, we examine the current literature on patients who are incarcerated, especial

Sleep duration among adults exposed to family member incarceration during childhood.

OBJECTIVES: The current study examines the association between family member incarceration during childhood and sleep duration among a national sample of adults (ages 18-80+). METHODS: We employ data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (N = 116,631). We use stepwise, multinomial logistic regression to examine associations between exposure to family member incarceration during childhood and sleep duration during adulthood. We also utilize the Karlson-Holm-Breen method to investigate whether indicators of socioeconomic disadvantage, and poor mental and physical health atten

Transverse colon and omental incarceration in femoral hernia: a case report.

A femoral hernia is one of the groin hernias with a high chance of incarceration and strangulation due to its narrow neck. Here, we report a case of transverse colon incarceration. A 65-year-old female patient presented with groin mass that failed to reduce and a dragging pain. Elective open femoral herniorrhaphy was done with the finding of viable incarcerated massive momentum along with transverse colon. Femoral hernias have a female-to-male ratio of about 10:1. Postmenopausal, increasing age, and constipation were some of the risk factors identified in our patient. Various types of organs c

Risk factors for toxocariasis during incarceration: the One Health intervention approach.

Despite potential exposure to soil-transmitted helminths, especially when stray dogs and cats are present, toxocariasis in inmate populations remains to be established. Accordingly, the present study assessed the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of toxocariasis at the Women's State Penitentiary of Parana, Brazil. A total of 234/370 (63.2%; 95% CI 58.2-68.0) women inmates and 28/87 (32.2%; 95% CI 23.3-42.6) correctional officers were seropositive for anti-Toxocara spp. IgG by ELISA, with inmates 2.62-fold more likely positive (p = 0.00000026). The univariate model has identified that

Association between incarceration and psychotic experiences in a general population sample.

Incarceration of individuals with mental disorders is an important public health topic. While incarceration appears to be associated with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, to the best of our knowledge, no study has examined the association between incarceration and psychotic experiences (PEs). The present study aimed to examine whether individuals with PEs had higher odds of incarceration among a general population sample using data from Baltimore and New York City (N = 974). We fitted three regression models to examine the association between incarceration and PEs, using hierarch

We Must Do Better: Addressing High Mortality After Release from Incarceration.

People who are incarcerated have high rates of mental illness, substance use disorder, suicide attempts, and chronic medical conditions. Mortality rates are also significantly elevated following release. Additional work needs to be done to understand the risk factors for increased morbidity and mortality of people impacted by incarceration to better inform future interventions and system changes.

Perforated Appendicitis and Bowel Incarceration within Morgagni Hernia: A Case Report.

Morgagni hernia (MH) is a result of abdominal organ protrusion through the congenital defect in the anterior retrosternal aspect of the diaphragm. The colon and omentum are the most commonly involved organs, followed by the small intestine, stomach and liver. Symptoms of MH may be absent, although the majority of patients will experience mild dyspnea or abdominal discomfort. We present a case of MH complicated with intrathoracic acute perforated appendicitis and intestinal obstruction.
