Four patients with chronic hepatitis C who did not respond to treatment with alpha interferon were treated with oral ribavirin at a dose of 1.000-1.200 mg/day for 6 months. A marked, although transitory, decrease was observed in the transaminase values which returned to pre-treatment values on termination of the same. Serum beta-2-microglobulin (b2m) levels were studied in 10 patients treated with alpha interferon (IFN) for thrombocythaemia associated with chronic myeloproliferative diseases. In eight patients the IFN treatment decreased the blood platelet level to < 600 x 10(9)/l. Serum b2m levels rose significantly and dose-dependently immediately after the onset of treatment, by a median maximal increase of 72% with IFN 3 MU every other day, and 95% with 3 MU daily. The b2m rise caused by IFN abolishes the value of serum b2m in states where b2m is used as an indicator of disease activity.

We report the case of a patient with prolymphocytic leukemia in whom a lengthy survival of 5 years was observed after treatment with splenic irradiation and chemotherapy. The patient obtained a surprising improvement with a significant reduction in the absolute count of the prolymphocytes and considerable reduction in splenomegaly after 3 months' therapy with interferon alpha.

A 28 year old woman with hepatitis B (HB) related chronic active hepatitis was treated with a 12 week course of alpha-interferon (alpha-IFN). She developed acute mono-arthritis 1 week after completion of treatment. Her rheumatoid factor (RF) was positive before alpha-IFN and fell steadily during therapy. Sixty-five cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 54 infants and children with bacterial meningitis were analyzed for the presence of interferon (IFN)-alpha with a biologic assay. Of the 65 samples, 3 were positive (2-4 IU/mL) and only 1 of 56 collected early was at 4 IU/mL. The antibody response to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) was studied in 15 chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients who seroconverted following treatment with alpha interferon. The levels of anti-HBs (IU/l) attained were significantly lower than those recorded in patients with convalescent symptomatic or asymptomatic acute infection and in hospital personnel who received a plasma derived HBV vaccine.

Despite different treatment modalities, resistance to treatment is observed in 4-15% of patients with anogenital condylomata acuminata. A total of 16 patients with resistant condylomata acuminata or extended infection affecting an area of more than 6 cm2 were treated with a prospectively defined therapy entailing laser treatment and adjuvant systemic interferon-alpha 2B (3 x 1 MU/day for 7 days). PURPOSE: The clinical course of patients with myeloproliferative disorders and excessive thrombocytosis may be complicated by serious hemorrhagic or thrombotic events. We have previously reported that interferon-alpha can control severe refractory thrombocytosis in patients with advanced chronic myelogenous leukemia.
