Sequential psychological testing during the course of autoimmune hyperthyroidism.

Although the psychological disturbances accompanying Graves' disease are well known, the time required for normalisation of these disturbances during antithyroid drug treatment is not known. Therefore sequential psychological testing during the course of Graves' disease was done. There are also contradictory results concerning the possible correlation of neurophysiological and psychological test results during the course of Graves' disease with thyroid hormone values. Finally, psychological disturbances have been proposed as possible etiologic factors in Graves' disease. In our study, a signif

Network analysis of anxiety and depressive symptoms among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted the mental health and well-being of medical personnel, including nursing students. Network analysis provides a deeper characterization of symptom-symptom interactions in mental disorders. The aim of this study was to elucidate characteristics of anxiety and depressive symptom networks of Chinese nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: A total of 932 nursing students were included. Anxiety and depressive symptom were measured using the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and two-item Pati

Obervations on subjective symptomatology, coping behavior, and medical decisions is asthma.

The Asthma Symptom Checklist (ASC), describing the subjective symptoms reported to occur during asthmatic attacks, has been developed previously. In the present study, the ASC key cluster solution was replicated and refined within a sample of 374 asthmatic inpatients. All of the original symptom categories were reporduced, including two mood categories, Panic-Fear and Irritability, a Fatigue category, and two somatic categories. Hyperventilation-Hypocapnia and Airway Obstruction. Two refinements were notable: (1) The Airway Obstruction category was empirically divided into two conceptually cle

Mood and anxiety regulation by nicotinic acetylcholine receptors: A potential pathway to modulate aggression and related behavioral states.

The co-morbidity between smoking and mood disorders is striking. Preclinical and clinical studies of nicotinic effects on mood, anxiety, aggression, and related behaviors, such as irritability and agitation, suggest that smokers may use the nicotine in tobacco products as an attempt to self-medicate symptoms of affective disorders. The role of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in circuits regulating mood and anxiety is beginning to be elucidated in animal models, but the mechanisms underlying the effects of nicotine on aggression-related behavioral states (ARBS) are still not understo

Mania in six preschool children.

At least nine cases of apparent preschool manic-depressive illness have been previously reported in the literature. In each of these children, a strong family history of affective illness was noted. In this report, the case histories of six preschool children ages 3 to 5 years with bipolar illness are summarized. These six were obtained from a sample of 36 consecutively hospitalized preschool children. Thus 17% of these hospitalized preschool children had bipolar illness. All had irritable mood, strong family history of affective illness, and previous presentation with symptoms of attention de…

Affective disorders and endocrine disease. New insights from psychosomatic studies.

This is a review of psychosomatic interactions between affective disorders (depressive and anxiety disturbances, irritable mood) and endocrine disease. Particular reference is made to stressful life events in the pathogenesis of endocrine disease, psychopathology of hormonal disturbances, and pathophysiology of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function in depression and Cushing's disease. These psychosomatic interactions may lead to appraisal of common etiological mechanisms in endocrine and psychiatric disorders, of the value of retaining the category of organic affective syndromes in psyc…

Characterization of kynurenine pathway in patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

Our objectives are to demonstrate whether the kynurenine pathway is activated in diarrhea-type irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) patients, and whether the neurotoxic metabolite quinolinic acid (QUIN) is out of balance with the neuroprotective metabolite kynurenic acid (KYNA), and further explore whether this can lead to increase of N-methyl D-aspartate receptor 2B (NMDAR2B) expression in the enteric nervous system and in turn leads to intestinal symptoms and mood disorders. All enrolled healthy controls and patients accepted IBS symptom severity scale (IBS-SSS) score, Self-rating Depression Sca

Common Questions About Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a disruptive behavior disorder characterized by a pattern of angry or irritable mood, argumentative or defiant behavior, or vindictiveness lasting for at least six months. Children and adolescents with ODD may have trouble controlling their temper and are often disobedient and defiant toward others. There are no tools specifically designed for diagnosing ODD, but multiple questionnaires can aid in diagnosis while assessing for other psychiatric conditions. ODD is often comorbid with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, and mood diso…

Symptomatology, quality of life and economic features of irritable bowel syndrome--the effect of hypnotherapy.

AIMS: The purposes of this study were to quantify the effects of severe irritable bowel syndrome on quality of life and economic functioning, and to assess the impact of hypnotherapy on these features. METHODS: A validated quality of life questionnaire including questions on symptoms, employment and health seeking behaviour was administered to 25 patients treated with hypnotherapy (aged 25-55 years; four male) and to 25 control irritable bowel syndrome patients of comparable severity (aged 21-58 years; two male). Visual analogue scales were used and scores derived to assess the patients' symp

Identifying the presence and timing of discrete mood states prior to therapy.

The present study tested a novel, person-specific method for identifying discrete mood profiles from time-series data, and examined the degree to which these profiles could be predicted by lagged mood and anxiety variables and time-based variables, including trends (linear, quadratic, cubic), cycles (12-hr, 24-hr, and 7-day), day of the week, and time of day. We analyzed ambulatory data from 45 individuals with mood and anxiety disorders prior to therapy. Data were collected four-times-daily for at least 30 days. Latent profile analysis was applied person-by-person to discretize each individua

Associated mood changes with naloxegol therapy for opioid-induced constipation in a patient with psychiatric disease.

The objective of this clinical case report is to highlight unusual adverse effects brought on by naloxegol therapy in a patient with underlying psychiatric illness. The patient is a 68-year-old female, with a psychiatric history of bipolar disorder, who presented for chronic pain management and opioid-induced constipation. After failing other therapies, she was trialed on naloxegol on three separate occasions. She experienced mood lability with symptoms including agitation, confusion, irritability, hysteria and unprompted crying spells on each occasion. Notably, the drug manufacturer does not

Cognitive flexibility in phenotypes of pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians and researchers debate whether children with chronic, nonepisodic irritability should receive the diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD). To address this debate, we evaluated cognitive flexibility, or the ability to adapt to changing contingencies, in three groups of children: narrow-phenotype BD (NP-BD; full-duration manic episodes of elevated/expansive mood; N = 50; 13.1 +/- 2.9 years), severe mood dysregulation (SMD; chronic, nonepisodic irritability; N = 44; 12.2 +/- 2.1 years), and healthy controls (N = 43; 13.6 +/- 2.4 years). Cognitive flexibility is relevant to sympto

Illness beliefs of depressed Chinese American patients in primary care.

This study investigated the illness beliefs of 40 depressed Chinese Americans in a primary care setting using the Exploratory Model Interview Catalogue (EMIC). Twenty-two depressed Chinese Americans (76%) complained of somatic symptoms; 4 (14%) reported psychological symptoms including irritability, rumination, and poor memory. No patients reported depressed mood spontaneously. Yet, 93% endorsed depressed mood when they filled out the CBDI. Twenty-one patients (72%) did not know the name of their illness or did not consider it a diagnosable medical illness, and five patients (17%) attributed t

Clinical use of mood stabilizers beyond treatment for bipolar disorder: The REAP-MS study.

OBJECTIVE: Mood stabilizers are psychotropic drugs mainly used to treat bipolar disorder in the acute phase or for maintenance therapy to prevent relapse. In clinical practice, mood stabilizers are commonly prescribed for conditions other than bipolar disorder. This study investigated the distribution of mood stabilizer prescriptions for different psychiatric diagnoses and studied differences in the drugs, dosage, and plasma concentration in 10 Asian countries including Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, China, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Indonesia, and Myanmar. METHODS: Patients prescr

Using a Developmental Approach to Investigate Behavioral, Neurodevelopmental, and Depressive Irritability Types.

OBJECTIVE: Irritability is highly heterogeneous and a common challenge in youth clinical services. Albeit transdiagnostic, the diagnostic manuals conceptualize severe irritability differently: the ICD-11 primarily recognizes it as behavioral (oppositional defiant disorder specifier), and the DSM-5-TR, as depressive (core to disruptive mood dysregulation disorder). Irritability is also highly prevalent in, and genetically linked to, neurodevelopmental conditions. It is unclear whether irritability represents a unitary construct or multiple different types. We examined whether distinct behaviora
