The genetics of idiopathic torsion dystonia.

The controversy regarding the mode of inheritance of idiopathic torsion dystonia in the Ashkenazi Jewish population has been resolved. At one time it was believed to be inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder. But recent studies, including a prospective, systematic, blinded analysis of the first- and second-degree relatives of 43 probands with age at onset less than 28 years found the disorder to be inherited in an autosomal dominant manner with a penetrance of approximately 0.30. Linkage analysis of Ashkenazi Jewish families with multiple affected members revealed that the gene for dysto

The adult polyglucosan body disease mutation GBE1 c.1076A>C occurs at high frequency in persons of Ashkenazi Jewish background.

Mutations of the glycogen branching enzyme gene, GBE1, result in glycogen storage disease (GSD) type IV, an autosomal recessive disorder having multiple clinical forms. One mutant allele of this gene, GBE1 c.1076A>C, has been reported in Ashkenazi Jewish cases of an adult-onset form of GSD type IV, adult polyglucosan body disease (APBD), but no epidemiological analyses of this mutation have been performed. We report here the first epidemiological study of this mutation in persons of Ashkenazi Jewish background and find that this mutation has a gene frequency of 1 in 34.5 (95% CI: 0.0145-0.0512

Living in a Genetic World: How Learning About Interethnic Genetic Similarities and Differences Affects Peace and Conflict.

Information about the degree of one's genetic overlap with ethnic outgroups has been emphasized in genocides, is frequently learned about through media reporting, and is increasingly being accessed via personal genetic testing services. However, the consequence of learning about whether your own ethnic group is either genetically related to or genetically distinct from a disliked ethnic group remains unknown. Across four experiments, using diverse samples, measures and contexts, we demonstrate that altering perceptions of genetic overlap between groups in conflict--in this case Arabs and Jews-

[From psychotherapy to psychoanalysis: Max Levy-Suhl (1876-1947)].

From psychotherapy to psychoanalysis: Max Levy-Suhl (1876-1947). Levy-Suhl can be considered one of the great practising psychotherapists in early 20th century Berlin. He was active in various fields, including ophthalmology, forensic adolescent psychiatry and hypnosis. Prominent among his publications were two handbooks of psychotherapeutic methods. His attitude towards psychoanalysis shifted from initial criticism to acceptance. Ca. 1930 he experienced some kind of conversion, resulting in his training at the Berlin Institute and becoming a member of the German Psychoanalytic Society. As a J

Pemphigus--analysis of epidemiological factors in 155 patients.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris is a chronic autoimmune mucocutaneous blistering disease. Only a few studies have evaluated the epidemiological and aetiological parameters of pemphigus vulgaris in a large group of patients over the long term. METHODS: The sample included 155 patients with a diagnosis of pemphigus who attended the pemphigus clinic of a major tertiary medical centre from 1976 to 2004. Data were obtained from the patient files and entered into an ad hoc form; patients were contacted by telephone for missing information. RESULTS: The female-to-male ratio was 1.5 : 1. Non-Ashkenaz

Increased incidence of Parkinson disease among relatives of patients with Gaucher disease.

In a previous study of 99 Ashkenazi Jewish patients with Parkinson disease from Israel who were tested for the six most common mutations for Gaucher disease, 31.3% had at least one Gaucher disease mutation, implying that carrier status per se my be a risk for Parkinson disease. The purpose of this survey was to ascertain the presence of Parkinson disease among Ashkenazi Jewish obligate carriers of Gaucher disease relative to its incidence in a comparable cohort of Ashkenazi Jews who are putatively non-carriers. There was no statistically significant difference in gender or age between the grou

Familial Mediterranean fever.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most frequent hereditary inflammatory disease characterized by self-limited recurrent attacks of fever and serositis. It is transmitted in an autosomal recessive pattern and affects certain ethnic groups mainly Jews, Turks, Arabs, and Armenians. FMF is caused by mutations in MEFV gene, which encodes pyrin. This protein is expressed mainly in myeloid/monocytic cells and modulates IL-1beta processing, NF-kappaB activation, and apoptosis. A mutated pyrin probably results in uncontrolled inflammation. The most devastating complication of FMF is amyloidosis

Molecular and clinical heterogeneity of adult GM2 gangliosidosis.

Adult GM2 gangliosidosis is a rare autosomal recessive disease with widely varying neurological and psychiatric manifestations. It is caused by marked deficiency, but not total absence, of beta-hexosaminidase (Hex) A, due to a single base change in the alpha-subunit gene of Hex, resulting in a substitution of Ser for Gly at position 269 in the alpha-subunit of the enzyme. The same mutation was identified in all investigated patients, most of whom are Ashkenazi Jews. Among previously studied non-Jewish patients of unrelated families this mutation appears either homozygously or in compound heter

Clinical, radiologic, demographic, and occupational aspects of hand osteoarthritis in the elderly.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hand is common in elderly patients. The aim of this study was to characterize OA frequency, severity, and distribution and to trace interrelationships between these findings and the demographic, occupational, and medical data from elderly Jewish nonrheumatologic patients. METHODS: Study participants were 253 consecutive patients admitted to a geriatric center for a variety of nonrheumatic medical conditions. Excluded patients were those with rheumatoid arthritis; neurologic, orthopedic, or other conditions that would interfere with symmetric hand function

Dr. Haakon Sæthre: a Norwegian neuroscientist and his resistance against Nazi Germany.

Dr. Haakon Sæthre was a leader of Norwegian neurology and psychiatry. He was resourceful, compassionate and had immense pride in his independent homeland. He described Sæthre-Chotzen syndrome (acrocephalosyndactyly type III). When Nazi Germany occupied Norway during World War II, Sæthre fearlessly and actively resisted, from revoking his medical association membership, to hiding persecuted Jews as patients in his psychiatric ward and aiding in their escape to Sweden, to managing the largest "illegal" food warehouse in Oslo with Danish humanitarian aid. As a prominent and noticeable citizen, he

Familial mediterranean fever in Arabs.

Autoinflammatory diseases are a group of disorders characterised by seemingly unprovoked inflammation in the absence of high-titre autoantibodies or antigen-specific T cells, and include the hereditary periodic fever syndromes. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an archetypal autoinflammatory disorder, which is autosomal recessive and has a high prevalence in non-Ashkenazi Jews, Armenians, Turks, and Arabs. The classic clinical picture is recurrent acute short-lived febrile and painful attacks with variable periods of remission. In a subset of patients, the disorder is complicated by amyloi

Familial hyperekplexia and refractory status epilepticus: a new autosomal recessive syndrome.

Hyperekplexia is a rare disorder characterized by an exaggerated startle response to noise and handling and by neonatal hypertonia. It is predominantly an autosomal dominant disease; however, atypical cases with additional variable manifestations have been reported. We report a hitherto undescribed association of hyperekplexia and refractory status epilepticus in two siblings. Both children were born after an uneventful pregnancy to healthy unrelated Ashkenazi Jews. Both had increased startle and tone from birth and later became hypotonic. A metabolic evaluation, including a muscle biopsy, was

Assay for Detecting the I1307K Susceptibility Allele within the Adenomatous Polyposis ColiGene.

Most germline mutations of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumor suppressor gene result in a classic inherited cancer syndrome called familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). FAP is characterized by thousands of colonic polyps, well-defined extracolonic manifestations that may include pigmented lesions of the ocular fundus, supernumerary teeth, osteomas, odontomas, desmoid tumors and epidermoid cysts, and a 100% lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer. Shortly after the APC gene was cloned in 1991 (1,2) the molecular basis of an attenuated form of FAP was recognized to be related to ge

Donor insemination in Israel. Recipients' choice of donor.

OBJECTIVE: To study the physiognomic preferences of Israeli Jewish recipients of donor insemination. STUDY DESIGN: Donors were "scaled" by both their general popularity and their popularity among single women and married recipients. Following this procedure, the donors' physiognomic features were analyzed and interpreted in terms of Israel's sociopolitical system and the influences of the media. RESULTS: The preferred donor was an educated Ashkenazi Jew who was about 180 cm tall and weighed 72 kg, with straight, light-brown hair and light-colored eyes. This profile deviates from the average

Seroprevalence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii among two rural populations in northern Israel.

The prevalence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii was measured in two rural populations in northern Israel--Jewish kibbutz members and Arab villagers. The respective prevalences in these two populations were 22.2% and 55.8% (P < 0.001). No correlation was found between the presence of antibodies and sex, occupation, contact with cats, a history of fever and/or lymphadenopathy, eye disease, abortions or delivery of children with congenital malformations. In contrast to Jewish children who were not found to have antibodies in the first decade of life, 20.5% of Arab children tested positive.

Torsion dystonia genes in two populations confined to a small region on chromosome 9q32-34.

Idiopathic torsion dystonia (ITD) is characterized by sustained, involuntary muscle contractions, frequently causing twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal postures. Most familial forms of ITD display autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced penetrance. Linkage analysis has been previously used to localize a dystonia gene to the 9q32-34 region in a large non-Jewish family and in a group of Ashkenazi Jewish families. Utilizing GT repeat polymorphisms from this region, here we demonstrate that the gene causing dystonia in Ashkenazi Jews can be localized to the 11-cM interval between AK

[Neuropsychological sequelae of deportation to the Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War].

The essential neuropsychic consequences of the deportation to the nazi concentration camps of adults during the second world war are the "KZ syndrome", the survival syndrome (or persecution syndrome) and reactive schizophrenias. The "KZ syndrome" puts together a psychic asthenia, a progressive intellectual deterioration, anxiety, depressive mood and vegetative disturbances. It is brought about as a consequence of malnutrition and the psychic traumas suffered by those deported. It shows up mainly in the non-jewish deported. The survival syndrome is chronic, puts together anxiety, insomnia and n

Alcohol, drug, and mental health problems among Jewish and Christian men at a university.

Data from a questionnaire sent to 704 male university students and nonacademic staff were reanalyzed to compare self-reports of drug and alcohol intake patterns and problems as well as family histories of psychiatric disorders for Jewish (N = 110, Group 1) and Christian men (N = 594, Group 2). Although the two groups did not differ significantly on the quantity and frequency of alcohol intake, men in Group 2 were more likely to report at least one episode of heavy drinking and alcohol-related problems, and their responses indicated a higher rate of a family history of alcoholism. There were no

The prevalence of cervicitis, reserve cell hyperplasia, squamous metaplasia, and cervical dysplasia in Jewish women.

The prevalence of cervicitis, reserve cell hyperplasia, squamous metaplasia, and dysplasia was studied in Jewish women and compared to that reported elsewhere in non-Jewish populations. The study was based on a histologic review of 250 women whose cervices were clinically either normal or presented with minor changes, and of 50 cases of squamous cell carcinoma. The findings indicate that the prevalence of the above-mentioned histologic features in the 2 groups of Jewish women is similar to that observed in comparable groups of non-Jews. It thus appears that in a majority of Jewish women the hi
