CONTEXT: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in renal fusion, ectopia, renal rotational anomalies, renal hypoplasia, and pelvicaliceal aberration for complex calculi is challenging for fear of inaccessibility, vascular, colonic, and splanchnic injury. We report our experience with 48 such patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2002 to July 2007, 48 patients (mean age, 28 years) underwent PCNL for mean stone size of 39 mm. Fourteen patients had malrotated kidneys, 12 patients had bifid renal pelvis with complete or incomplete double ureter, 10 horseshoe kidneys, 8 hypo plastic kidneys, 3 with cr

Since 1980, extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) has become the first line treatment for most stones in adults and children. The indications are based on criteria depending on localization, chemical composition and size of the renal and ureteral calculi. Since the DORNIER HM 3 which remains the gold standard of first generation lithotripters, many devices of second and third generation have been built (electro hydrolic, piezo electric and electromagnetic) with fluoroscopic and ultrasound localization systems. SWL may now be performed on an out-patient basis without anaesthesia or unde

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess ureteroscopy's impact on renal function in patients with a solitary kidney (SK), where nephron preservation is paramount. With the rising prevalence of SKs due to congenital anomalies or acquired conditions, understanding the safety profile of ureteroscopy, particularly its effects on renal function, seems essential.
METHODS: A literature search following PRISMA guidelines was conducted to identify reports published until May 2024. Eligible studies were included if they focused on ureteroscopy in SK patients and reported renal function outcomes. Data extrac

BACKGROUND: Bilateral duplicated kidney and ureter is a rare condition in urology, and it is even rarer for patients to have multiple stones simultaneously. We delineate the diagnostic and therapeutic trajectory of a patient presenting with bilateral duplex kidneys and ureters, characterized by the presence of multiple stones. Notably, the left kidney is a complete duplication, whereas the right kidney exhibits an incomplete duplication.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old male patient was diagnosed with bilateral duplex kidney and ureter combined with multiple stones. Ureteral flexible lithotri

Ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, in addition to causing progressive renal function loss, can lead to the formation of retained stones. Management planning for concomitant stones and UPJ obstruction is a topic of debate in the literature. We performed laparoscopic pyeloplasty and extracted all 144 stones from the renal pelvis and calyces of a 37-year-old male with UPJ stricture, using wireless flexible cystoscopic guidance. No complications occurred during the perioperative and postoperative periods. In challenging cases of UPJ obstruction with stones in multiple calyceal locations, si

Urolithiasis is a rare complication after kidney transplant. Over the years, treatment of kidney stones has evolved radically, but a standard approach for transplanted kidneys has not yet been defined. Here, we present a 69-year-old male patient who received successful treatment of nephrolithiasis of the transplanted kidney. The patient, who had received a kidney from a deceased donor, was admitted to our department following a posttransplant Doppler ultrasonography showing severe hydronephrosis of the transplanted kidney associated with acute renal function decay. Computed tomography scan con

More than 20 second-generation lithotriptors have been introduced for extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy. Despite great technical progress, each machine still has its specific short-comings. In cooperation, Storz Medical (Kreuzlingen, Switzerland) and the Department of Urology (Klinikum Mannheim, FRG), have developed a new lithotriptor designed to overcome these drawbacks. Energy source: Electromagnetic cylinder with paraboloid reflector (40 cm) for focusing, providing a wide range of pressure (190-1,000 bar) and a focal zone of 28 x 6 mm. The focal depth is maximally 15 cm. Coupling and po

A percutaneous nephrostomy tract can serve both to decompress the renal pelvis and as a route for dissolving renal stones and assisting in basket retrieval of ureteral stones. These techniques are especially valuable in patients who are poor operative risks.

INTRODUCTION: We are a reporting on the indications, techniques, and limitations of robotic surgery in the management of renal stones disease. Robotic surgery is a good tool to manage large kidney and ureteral stones, particularly in patients with anatomic anomalies. We describe three techniques in managing staghorn kidney stones: robotic anatrophic nephrolithotomy, robotic pyelolithotomy, and robotic nephrolithotomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Robotic pyelolithotomy (RP) is ideal for patients with large renal pelvis and partial staghorn stone with a wide extra-renal pelvis. Robotic nephrolithotom

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate indications for and complications, efficacy, and effects on renal function of unilateral nephrectomy in dogs with renal disease, and to evaluate the role that scintigraphy had in the decision to excise a kidney.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
ANIMALS: 30 dogs with renal disease that underwent unilateral nephrectomy. A comparison group of 12 dogs with renal calculi that underwent renal scintigraphy but not nephrectomy was included.
RESULTS: Indications for nephrectomy included renal or ureteral calculi (n = 10), renal mass (8), chronic pyelonephritis (5), perirenal

While most kidney stones are made of typical substances like calcium oxalate, patients with uncommon metabolic disorders or exposures/ingestions can crystallize rare materials in their urinary tracts, leading to unusual stone compositions. Six stones in 5 individuals were evaluated when their composition did not match known lithogenic substances. We report the first ever identified human urinary calculi composed of steviol, a metabolite of the no-calorie sweetener, stevia.

Human immunodeficiency virus prevalence was increasing worldwide. Medication-associated urinary calculi are very commonly caused by medications used to treat HIV-positive patients. We present a case of an HIV-positive 39-year-old male with ureteral stent encrustation and kidney stone. Ureterolithotripsy using a disposable flexible ureteroscope is performed. The postoperative evolution was favorable. The disposable flexible ureteroscope is effective in the treatment of HIV combined with ureteral stent encrustation.

Primary hyperoxaluria is a genetic disorder in glyoxylate metabolism that leads to systemic overproduction of oxalate. Functional deficiency of alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase in this disease leads to recurrent nephrolithiasis, nephrocalcinosis, systemic oxalosis, and kidney failure. We present a young woman with end-stage renal disease who received a kidney allograft and experienced early graft failure presumed to be an acute rejection. There was no improvement in kidney function, and she was required hemodialysis. Ultimately, biopsy revealed birefringent calcium oxalate crystals, which r

Objectives: To complement our previous findings regarding effect of ureteral access sheath (UAS) use, we checked RIRSearch database for patients who operated without using UAS. The aim of the study was to understand these new data better by comparing outcomes of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) that continued sheathless after a failed UAS insertion vs those planned and completed sheathless. Materials and Methods: Data of 195 patients who underwent sheathless RIRS for kidney and/or ureteral stones between 2011 and 2021 were retrieved from the database. Patients divided into two groups: case

Localization, stone-size as well as type of lithotriptors influence the extent of disintegration of stones and the individual rate free of stones after treatment with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. The piezoelectric lithotriptors do not require anaesthesia, but perform insufficient stone disintegration requiring no repeated treatments. Another draw-back is stone localization by ultrasound, which prevents treatment of some ureteral stones. Used voltage and rate of shock waves per treatment affect the extent of damage no the renal parenchyma. Risk of hypertension, residual disintegrated
