Vaccine effectiveness against laboratory-confirmed influenza hospitalizations among young children during the 2010-11 to 2013-14 influenza seasons in Ontario, Canada.

Uncertainty remains regarding the magnitude of effectiveness of influenza vaccines for preventing serious outcomes, especially among young children. We estimated vaccine effectiveness (VE) against laboratory-confirmed influenza hospitalizations among children aged 6-59 months. We used the test-negative design in hospitalized children in Ontario, Canada during the 2010-11 to 2013-14 influenza seasons. We used logistic regression models adjusted for age, season, and time within season to calculate VE estimates by vaccination status (full vs. partial), age group, and influenza season. We also ass

Nanotechnology for photodynamic therapy: a perspective from the Laboratory of Dr. Michael R. Hamblin in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

The research interests of the Hamblin Laboratory are broadly centered on the use of different kinds of light to treat many different diseases. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses the combination of dyes with visible light to produce reactive oxygen species and kill bacteria, cancer cells and destroy unwanted tissue. Likewise, UV light is also good at killing especially pathogens. By contrast, red or near-infrared light can have the opposite effect, to act to preserve tissue from dying and can stimulate healing and regeneration. In all these applications, nanotechnology is having an ever-growing im

Minimum inhibitory concentrations of amphotericin B against Candida krusei isolates from a French teaching hospital laboratory: a retrospective study over 8 years.

Recent studies have shown decreased susceptibility of Candida krusei to amphotericin B (AmB), in addition to its inherent resistance to fluconazole. The susceptibility of C. krusei to AmB was studied in the Parasitology-Mycology laboratory of Grenoble Teaching Hospital, France. Between 2003 and 2011, we analysed 200 C. krusei isolates from 130 patients. The isolates were mainly collected in intensive care, cardio-thoracic and cancer/haematology units. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by the E-test method. The modal MIC was 0.5 μg ml(-1); the MIC(50) and MIC(90) (MICs en

Eighteen-year laboratory-based surveillance of human coronavirus OC43 in a single tertiary hospital in the Republic of Korea: Temporal inflection, seasonal stability, and age-dependent risk.

Human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43), a member of the betacoronavirus genus, is a seasonally circulating respiratory virus that persists globally; however, long-term laboratory-based surveillance data remain limited. We analyzed multiplex real-time PCR test results collected at Dankook University Hospital between 2007 and 2024 to comprehensively evaluate long-term annual trends, seasonal structure, and age-specific detection patterns of HCoV-OC43. Based on nasopharyngeal swab specimens, the annual positivity rate of HCoV-OC43 ranged from 0.16% to 3.05%. A marked suppression in detection was obse

The role of air pressure transients on the spread of bacteria from wash-hand basin sink traps in hospital en-suite bathrooms: a laboratory-based pilot study.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for the involvement of sink and wash-hand basin traps in the spread of hospital-acquired infections in clinical settings. This pilot study used a full-scale model of a hospital wash-hand basin and wastewater drainage system, typical in single-occupancy hospital bathrooms, to examine bacterial transmission from sink traps to wash-hand basins during drainage system air pressure surges. METHODS: Simulating real-world conditions in a laboratory, a 50-m pipe network was connected to the model en-suite bathroom. Air pressure surges were generated within the pip

Discrimination between Legionnaires' Disease and Pneumococcal Pneumonia Based on the Clinical and Laboratory Features: A Quantitative Approach Using the Modified Winthrop-University Hospital Weighted Point System.

Objective Legionnaires' disease (LD) is a common form of lobar pneumonia, but the optimum diagnostic modality has long been a subject of debate due to incomplete sensitivity and specificity. A delay in the initiation of specific therapy for LD is associated with increased mortality. The decision to treat a patient for Legionella must be made quickly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of the modified Winthrop-University Hospital WUH system to identify LD while discriminating against pneumococcal pneumonia at the time of hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia. Evaluation of clinical, laboratory, radiographical and histopathological characteristics in patients with spinal tuberculosis in the context of HIV infection: An analysis of 52 patients from a South African tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: South Africa (SA) has the highest prevalence of people with tuberculosis (TB) and HIV coinfection globally. People living with HIV have an increased risk of TB infection, and are more likely to develop extrapulmonary TB. Approximately 10 - 20% of extrapulmonary TB accounts for skeletal TB, with spinal involvement in 50 - 60% of instances. Previous studies have shown highly heterogenic results regarding the effect of HIV status on clinical and laboratory characteristics in patients with spinal TB (STB). OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical, laboratory, radiographical and histopathol
