Extensive hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans in Norwegian travellers to the tropics.

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans is a common dermatosis in travellers to the tropics and typically presents as one or a few migrating serpiginous lesions on the lower extremities or buttocks. We present two Norwegian holidaymakers who developed extensive disease after returning from Brazil and Tanzania, respectively. Both patients responded to the treatment with ivermectin.

Anisakis simplex: analysis of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of third-stage larva.

This study analyzed the expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of the third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex, in an attempt to gain further insight into its genomic expression patterns. An A. simplex cDNA library was constructed using the Uni-ZAP XR expression vector. A total of 493 clones (insert DNA>400 bp) were sequenced out of 580 clones selected randomly from a cDNA library of the A. simplex third-stage larva. After BLAST search analyses, 154 (31.2%) ESTs were found to have very low similarity, or no match at all to any of the proteins and gene sequences in the published databases. Most matched c…

Pulmonary computed tomography findings of visceral larva migrans caused by Ascaris suum.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively evaluate the computed tomography (CT) findings of pulmonary involvement in patients with visceral larva migrans caused by Ascaris suum. METHODS: Institutional review board approval was obtained, and informed consent was waived. Chest CT scans obtained between January 1994 and November 2005 in 32 patients infected with A. suum were retrospectively evaluated by 3 chest radiologists. In 4 patients who underwent surgical or transbronchial biopsy, comparisons of the CT images with the actual specimens were performed. RESULTS: On CT scans, abnormal findings were seen …

Cytochemical characterization of the third-stage larva of Wuchereria bancrofti (Nematoda: Filarioidea).

In the present paper, we report the results we obtained using several cytochemical techniques to analyze the infective larva of Wuchereria bancrofti. An imidazole osmium tetroxide solution was used to visualize unsaturated fatty acids. A highly contrasted material forming a continuous structure was observed on the larval surface and over the epicuticle. A strong reaction was observed on the esophagus and also on the inner secreted material. Carbohydrates containing vic-glycol groups were not observed on the cuticle of the third-stage larva of W. bancrofti submitted to the Thiéry technique. Usi…

[Studies on detecting Brugia malayi larva in mosquitoes by polymerase chain reaction].

OBJECTIVE: To establish a specific, sensitive and simple assay for the detection of Brugia malayi larva in Anopheles sinensis. METHODS: Using a new DNA purification technique (Microcon 100) and two pairs of oligonucleotide primers (p1, p2 and p3, p4) suitable for detecting B. malayi in seven areas in our country, the mosquito vectors infected by B. malayi were detected by polymerase chain reaction(PCR). RESULTS: This PCR method could amplify separately a 322-basepair(bp) and a 155 bp DNA fragment and detect as few as 1/64 of one L1 in 1 mosquito, the detectable limit was nearly 4 pg DNA of f…

Defensive use of a fecal thatch by a beetle larva (Hemisphaerota cyanea).

The larva of the tortoise beetle, Hemisphaerota cyanea (Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae), constructs a thatch from long filamentous fecal strands, beneath which it is totally concealed. The thatch is not discarded at molting but is enlarged by addition of strands as the larva grows. Thatch construction begins when the larva hatches from the egg. Pupation occurs beneath the thatch. Two predators, a coccinellid beetle larva (Cycloneda sanguinea) and a pentatomid bug (Stiretrus anchorago), were shown to be thwarted by the thatch. However, one predator, a carabid beetle (Calleida viridipennis), feeds on…

[Lung manifestation of visceral larva migration syndrome due to Toxocara canis infection].

32 year-old patient was hospitalized because of disseminated lung lesions. 2 years earlier he manifested chorioditis. Exact disease history suggested suspicion of toxocare infection. The diagnosis was confirmed by serological tests with anti-Toxocara canis antibodies, bronchial lavage and chest CT scan. Administration of 450 mg of dietylokarbamasin (Hetrazan) resulted in complete resolution of pulmonary lesions.

[Cross reaction of Trichinella spiralis larva antigens with sera of schistosomiasis japonica].

Cross reactions of T. spiralis muscular larva antigens (TsMLA) against several sera from patients with other parasitic diseases by ELIB (enzyme-linked immunoblotting technique) were studied. The proteins of 31-100 KDa were recognized by sera of two cases of acute schistosomiasis, while proteins of 44/45, 51/53, 62/64 and 100 KDa were recognized by sera of 11 cases of chronic schistosomiasis. The proteins of 60 KDa showed varied cross reactions against sera of five kinds of patients with other parasitic diseases (filariasis, hookworm diseases, paragonimiasis, ascariasis and clonorchiasis). Only…

Cerebrospinal larva migrans due to Baylisascaris procyonis in a guinea pig colony.

Four guinea pigs from a colony of approximately 50 animals were examined for progressive neurologic disease of 5 days' duration. Signs of neurologic dysfunction included cachexia, stupor, hyperexcitability, lateral recumbency, and opisthotonos. Results of gross pathologic, microbiologic, and serologic examinations were unremarkable. Histologic examination of cerebral and cerebellar sections revealed multifocal malacia and regions of eosinophilic granulomatous inflammation. Cross-sections of nematode larvae, identified as Baylisascaris sp., most likely B. procyonis, the raccoon ascarid, were se…

Visceral larva migrans in mice experimentally infected with Baylisascaris transfuga (Ascarididae: Nematoda).

Laboratory bred albino mice, weighing 20 to 25 g, were orally infected with 2000 Baylisascaris transfuga infective eggs each. Mice were randomly chosen and sacrificed on days 1, 2, 3, 10, 15, 24 and 70 post-infection. Samples of intestine, mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, lungs, heart, spleen, kidneys, uterus, brain and skeletal muscles were collected and processed for conventional histopathology. In the early infection the major necropsy findings were focal haemorrhages on the intestinal wall, liver, lungs and brain. Histologically, larvae were found in haemorrhagic areas. In the subacute-chron…

[Human gnathostomiasis manifested by cutaneous larva migrans syndrome. Apropos of a case].

The authors report a case of cutaneous Larva migrans attributed to a gnathostomiasis in a Laotian man living in France since 3 years. The diagnosis was suggested on the basis of epidemiological and clinical context (he often ate raw fresh fish in Thailand) and blood eosinophilia. It was confirmed by ELISA method which showed a very high antibody titer to Gnathostoma spinigerum. The patient was treated with cortisone and diethylcarbamazine and he has remained asymptomatic since.

[Visceral larva migrans syndrome. Description of a case caused by Toxocara canis].

Visceral larva migraine syndrome in most often caused by the migration of Toxocara canis larvae in the tissues after ingestion of the embryonated eggs. The disease, characterised by granulomas, is most commonly found among children in whom it causes fever, hepatomegaly, respiratory disturbances and eosinophilia. Diagnosis is by biopsy and serum tests and prophylaxis is essential since no specific therapy exists. The case of toxocariasis described was encountered in a middle aged women and is unusual as it had lasted for several years whereas spontaneous remission is the rule.

Human external ophthalmomyiasis caused by the horse bot fly larva (Gasterophilus spp.).

We report the case of a 20-year-old woman who presented with a subconjunctival maggot. The maggot was removed and identified as the larval form of the horse bot fly (Gasterophilus spp.). The patient had been grooming infected horses in a stable prior to presentation. To our knowledge, this is the first well documented case in the ophthalmic literature of external ophthalmomyiasis caused by Gasterophilus spp.
