Visceral larva migrans (VLM) is a type of toxocariasis and is among the most widespread zoonotic parasitic infections of public health importance. This study aimed to describe the structure and epidemiological trends in hospitalization of patients with VLM in Poland (2014-2023). This population-based, retrospective study utilized hospitalization records of VLM patients in Poland obtained from the Nationwide General Hospital Morbidity Study. A total of 3559 hospital discharge records were assessed. The study group consisted of 1888 males (53% of all patients) and 1671 females (47%). Patients un…

Human toxocariasis is a helminth zoonosis resulting from accidental infection of humans by the roundworms Toxocara canis (T. canis) and cati (T. cati). The infection occurs in five forms: systemic (VLM), ocular, neurological, covert and asymptomatic. The aim of this study was to characterize the radiological and immunological findings in hepatic inflammation during the course of systemic infection by Toxocara sp. in children. Fifteen children, 2 to 17 years of age, with serological diagnosis of T. canis infection underwent abdominal ultrasonography and computer tomography (CT). Eosinophil coun

A 42-y-old female presented with common cold-like symptoms. Laboratory data showed mild liver dysfunction together with peripheral blood eosinophilia. She was suspected of having a helminthic infection, however parasite eggs or larvae were not detected by repeated stool examinations. Eventually she transpired to have a high IgG antibody titer against excretory-secretary (ES) antigen of Ascaris suum larvae, but not of Toxocara canis larvae, suggesting that she had been suffering from visceral larva migrans (VLM) caused by A. suum. Her sickness improved without any treatment. Current results cle…

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to evaluate chest radiographic and CT findings of patients with pulmonary lesions associated with visceral larva migrans due to Ascaris suum or Toxocara canis. CT investigation was focused on the location, size, contour, and internal features of the lesions; migration of lesions; mediastinal lymphadenopathy; and pleural effusion.
CONCLUSION: Pulmonary visceral larva migrans appears on CT as multifocal subpleural nodules with halo or ground-glass opacities and ill-defined margins.

A 27-year-old woman was admitted because of pain radiating through her back on neck flexion that had begun a month ago. She frequently ate r … RI lesions, and reduced the anti-Ascaris suum antibody titers in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Larva migrans of Ascaris suum involving the central nervous system is considered to be extremely rare, but such cases showing mild neurologic impairment without systemic symptoms may have been overlooked.

It was possible to detect in the sera of patients, for whom visceral larva migrans had been confirmed histologically, not only antibodies to the excretory–secretory antigens of Toxocara canis by means of fluorescence techniques, but also specific homocytotropic antibody measured by passive cutaneous anaphylactic tests in baboons and monkeys. It was observed that these patients had ten to fifteen times the average normal level of IgE as determined by the radioimmunosorbent test. All cases authenticated histologically gave these results, which suggests that these sort of serological findings can…

Toxocariosis is a parasitic disease caused by the larvae from genus Toxocara sp. There are two classic syndromes described for this entity: visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans, depending on larvae localization. Human being behaves as an accidental host in which Toxocara sp. does not become an adult worm. This infection is generally asymptomatic but clinical manifestations can be diverse, and they vary according to number and localization of entrenched larvae and host's immune system. In the last years it has been studied a relation between Toxocara sp. and some cutaneous manifestat…

BACKGROUND: Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) is a neglected tropical skin disease associated with significant clinical pathology. Little knowledge exists about prevalence and risk factors of HrCLM in endemic regions.
METHODOLOGY/ PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To understand the epidemiology of HrCLM in Amazonia, we conducted a cross-sectional study in a resource-poor township in Manaus, Brazil. HrCLM was diagnosed in 8.2% (95% CI, 6.3-10.1%) of the study population (N = 806) with a peak prevalence of 18.2% (95% CI, 9.3-27.1%) in children aged 10-14. Most of the tracks (62.4%) were locate…

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) is a clinical syndrome caused by infection of man by Toxocara spp, the common roundworm of dogs and cats. Tissue migration of larval stages causes illness specially in children. Because larvae are difficult to detect in tissues, diagnosis is mostly based on serology. After the introduction of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using the larval excretory-secretory antigen of T. canis (TES), the diagnosis specificity was greatly improved although cross-reactivity with other helminths are still being reported. In Brazil, diagnosis is routinely made after ab…

Visceral (hepatic) larva migrans is a parasitic disease which predominantly affects children. This usually presents with fever and abdominal pain with occasional respiratory symptoms. Radiologically, hepatic lesions are seen in cases of hepatic visceral larva migrans. However, the lesions causing pseudoaneurysms are uncommon. We report a 3-year-old girl who presented with prolonged fever, abdominal pain and haematemesis. Laboratory investigations demonstrated anaemia, raised eosinophil count, jaundice, elevated serum IgE levels and positive Toxocara serology. Ultrasonography revealed multiple …

Due to the recent recovery of brown bear populations in Central Europe, information about their ascarid parasite, Baylisascaris transfuga is necessary as the parasite represents a part of natural ecological networks. B. transfuga can lead to larva migrans syndrome in accidental hosts, but its zoonotic potential has not been confirmed. The resent study compares development of larva migrans in infected mice inoculated with two infectious doses (ID 200 and ID 2000) of B. transfuga embryonated eggs, and the clinical manifestation to evaluate the pathogenicity of the larvae. Histopathology revealed…

A Western blotting procedure with excretory/secretory antigens from Toxocara canis larvae was developed for immunodiagnosis of visceral larva migrans in mice. In this study, eighty Swiss albino mice were allotted into two groups of 40 each as control and experimental groups, and T. canis ova containing infective larvae were given to mice in the latter group to form visceral larva migrans. Blood samples were taken from 5 infected and 5 control mice on days 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60 after infection. After bleeding, the mice were necropsied. Slides were prepared from their brain tissues …

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) and visceral larva migrans (VLM) are neglected zoonoses caused by Ancylostoma spp. and Toxocara spp. Although investigations have been conducted in some areas of São Paulo State, Brazil, the presence of these helminth eggs in domestic carnivores' feces from public areas in Jaboticabal (SP) had not previously been studied. This study aimed to detect Ancylostoma spp. and Toxocara spp. eggs in fecal samples collected in public squares using the Willis-Mollay method and to assess the community's knowledge related to public health topics through a structured questionna…
