Time To Pregnancy and occupational lead exposure.

BACKGROUND: Lead exposure is known to be harmful to the male reproductive system, including impairment of fertility. However, it is unclear whether currently existing low levels of exposure have this effect. AIMS: To study retrospectively current workers in lead using industries (battery manufacture, smelting, etc), and in non-lead using control industries, in four European countries, with Time To Pregnancy as the outcome variable, as part of the EU funded Asclepios Project. METHODS: Exposure assessment was mainly by blood lead values, which were available from the late 1970s, supplemented b…

Lead exposure in Mexican radiator repair workers.

BACKGROUND: Lead exposure was investigated among 73 Mexican radiator repair workers (RRWs), 12 members of their family (4 children and 8 wives), and 36 working controls. RRWs were employed at 4 radiator repair shops in Mexico City and 27 shops in Cuernavaca and surrounding areas. METHODS: Exposure was assessed directly through the use of personal air sampling and hand wipe samples. In addition, industrial hygiene inspections were performed and detailed questionnaires were administered. Blood lead levels were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). RESULTS: The mean…

Adult lead poisoning from a herbal medicine.

A 56-year-old Indian lady presented with one week history of abdominal pain, jaundice and chronic polyarthralgia. She had evidence of hemolytic anemia and hepatitis. Her blood lead level was high and a peripheral blood film showed dense basophilic stippling. It is believed that the lead toxicity was due to the use of Indian herbal medicine.

Early exposure to lead and juvenile delinquency.

Cross-sectional studies have reported an association between lead (Pb) levels in bone and delinquent behavior in later childhood and adolescence. This is the first prospective longitudinal study of Pb and child development to address this question with comprehensive assessments of toxicant exposure and other developmental cofactors. A prospective longitudinal birth cohort of 195 urban, inner-city adolescents recruited between 1979 and 1985 was examined. Relationships between prenatal and postnatal exposure to Pb (serial blood Pb determinations) and antisocial and delinquent behaviors (self- an…

Lead reduces the nephrotoxicity of mercuric chloride.

The nephrotoxic effect of a single intraperitoneal dose of mercuric chloride (HgCl(2); 6 mg/kg) on adult CD-1 female mice was reduced at 24 and 48 h after injection, by a 48-h pretreatment nontoxic dose of lead acetate (Pb; 5 mg/kg) delivered by intravenous tail-vein injection (intravenous). While protection is temporally associated with lead-induced mitosis, occurring about 39 h after intracardiac lead injection (D. D Choie and G. W. Richter, 1974, Lab. Invest. 30, 447-451), the mechanism of the observed protection remains to be established.

Occupational exposure to lead and neuropsychological dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the neuropsychological effects of current low level and previous higher levels of exposure to lead and evaluate the relation between effects of lead and bone lead. METHODS: A neuropsychological test battery was given to 54 storage battery workers with well documented long term exposure to lead. The effect was studied in two subgroups: those whose blood lead had never exceeded 2.4 mmol/l (the low BPbmax group, n = 26), and those with higher exposure about 10 years earlier (the high BPbmax group, n = 28). In both groups, the recent exposure had been low. Correlations betw…

Maternal influences on cord blood lead levels.

We constructed models of umbilical cord blood lead (PbB), with and without the addition of maternal PbB at delivery and earlier in pregnancy, to determine which factors explaining cord PbB depended upon maternal PbB and which did not. We prospectively studied women of low-to-middle socioeconomic status who lived in the Valley of Mexico from 12 weeks of pregnancy to delivery. We measured maternal venous PbB during pregnancy and at delivery, and umbilical cord PbB (1-38 micrograms/dl, 0.05-1.83 mumol/l). We used multiple regression analyses to model cord PbB and a logit analysis to model the mat…

Pacemaker and defibrillator lead entrapment: case studies.

Cadavers and cineradiographic analysis have been used to document the effects of the medial subclavicular musculotendinous complex (MSMC) upon lead function. Four cadavers with pacemakers were dissected and photographed to demonstrate the course a lead takes as it passes through the costoclavicular region. One lead had been placed into the cephalic vein. In the other three cadavers, leads placed by currently accepted techniques of subclavian venipuncture were all found to pass through the soft tissues of the subclavicular region before entering the venous system. Cineradiographic results from …

[Cardiac strangulation with permanent epicardial pacemaker lead].

A 3-year-old boy underwent corrective surgery for tetralogy of Fallot. During the operation, permanent epicardial pacemaker leads were implanted for complete A-V block, which was transient and a generator implantation was not necessary. The postoperative course was uneventful and he had been doing well until nine years of age, when he was admitted to our hospital with general fatigue. The data of echo cardiogram and cardiac catheterization showed the biventricular heart failure with right ventricular outflow tract obstruction (RVOTO). Because of his rapid deterioration refractory to the intens…

Lead nephrotoxicity and associated disorders: biochemical mechanisms.

Lead may exert toxic effects on several organ systems, but those in the kidney are the most insidious. Acute lead nephropathy is characterized by proximal tubular dysfunction with the development of a Fanconi-type syndrome, alterations in mitochondrial structure and the development of cytosolic and nuclear inclusion bodies. Intracellular lead is associated with specific high affinity proteins and can also bind to metallothionein. Chronic lead nephropathy is irreversible and is typically accompanied by interstitial fibrosis, both hyperplasia and atrophy of the tubules, glomerulonephritis and, u…

Six areas lead national early immunization drive.

On June 13, 1991, President George Bush announced in a White House ceremony a local planning effort to break down barriers and provide better access to immunization in six representative localities "to solve the problem of late immunization." (children need to be immunized appropriately by their second birthday, not just in time for school.). The community "Immunization Action Plans" (IAP) are one of several Federal, State, and local responses to an outbreak of measles that produced 27,600 cases and 89 deaths in 1990. The community effort and subsequent early childhood immunization plans aroun

Pigmentary epitheliopathy, disc edema, and lead intoxication.

A 52-year-old lead-exposed worker presented with disc edema, nerve fiber layer infarcts, and an acute bilateral pigment epitheliopathy that phenotypically resembled APMPPE. The patient had definite laboratory evidence of increased total body lead burden. The simultaneous involvement of retina, disc, and choriocapillaris suggests that what has been reported as the spectrum of APMPPE may represent a nonspecific vascular response to multiple injurious stimuli, including lead.

An outbreak of lead poisoning in dogs.

An outbreak of lead toxicosis in working dogs on a sheep farm is described. The affected dogs exhibited neurological signs which appeared to be initiated by strenuous physical activity. Radiological examination and estimation of urinary delta aminolevulinic acid (U-ALA) was not found to be useful for clinical diagnosis but blood lead estimation was helpful in detecting and confirming dogs that were exposed to lead. Gross pathological lesions were absent in a lead poisoned dog. However, histopathological lesions were seen in brain and bone. Acid-fast lead inclusion were not detected in liver an…
