Because broiler chickens are juvenile animals undergoing physical development, stocking density during rearing may influence this development. Some of these physical changes may cause welfare problems, for example, decreased bone quality, which may lead to fracture during catching and transport. Others do not influence welfare directly but can be used as indicators of the animal's ability to cope with its environment (e.g., fluctuating asymmetry). The present study evaluates the effect of stocking density on bone quality and fluctuating asymmetry. Birds were stocked at densities of 2.4, 5.8, 8

PHOSPHO1 is a bone-specific phosphatase implicated in the initiation of inorganic phosphate generation for matrix mineralization. The control of mineralization is attributed to the actions of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP). However, matrix vesicles (MVs) containing apatite crystals are present in patients with hypophosphatasia as well as TNAP null (Akp2(-/-)) mice. It is therefore likely that other phosphatases work with TNAP to regulate matrix mineralization. Although PHOSPHO1 and TNAP expression is associated with MVs, it is not known if PHOSPHO1 and TNAP are coexpressed duri

AIMS: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is associated with persistent strength deficits and thigh muscle atrophy, which may contribute to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Other potential musculoskeletal alterations, such as changes in bone morphology and mechanical properties, are less well understood. No study has comprehensively examined multi-tissue deficits post-ACLR, limiting insight into potential structural contributors to long-term joint vulnerability. Consequently, this cross-sectional study investigated differences in muscle size and quality, bone morphology, and

Bone infection, particularly of the skull and the long bones of the legs and arms, despite being a common characteristic of tertiary stage syphilis and congenital syphilis in the past, is seldom encountered clinically due to effective antibiotic therapy. We report a case of a 62-year-old man who presented with one-month acute pain in the left leg. Treponema pallidum particle agglutination test was positive, and radiography showed a pathological fracture of the left tibiofibula. Surgical debridement and biopsy of the bone marrow were performed and a pathological diagnosis of syphilis osteomyeli

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Osteochondrosis is a disease described in several bones of the human body. It is a condition that can lead to pain and antalgic gait, although it can also be asymptomatic. The present work aims to report an incidental finding of osteochondrosis that afflicted the medial cuneiform bone.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old boy injured his leg in a road traffic accident and there was no evidence of a fracture line on the dorsal-plantar foot radiograph. However, the findings of marginal irregularity and sclerotic areas were considered to be indicative of osteochondrosis.

Background: This investigation examines the extraction of metals from animal bones into broth, and assesses whether bone broths are good sources of essential metals and the risks associated with the consumption of toxic metals. Method:Three sets of controlled experiments were performed to study the factors (cooking time, acidity, bone type and animal species) that influence metal extractions. Three types of animal bone broth-based foods were also tested. Results: Reducing the broth pH from 8.38 to 5.32 significantly (p < 0.05) increased Ca and Mg extraction by factors of 17.4 and 15.3, respect

Composite synthetic bones are a commercially available substitute for cadaveric specimens, and they have previously been validated to replicate natural bone under quasistatic, non-destructive testing. Synthetic tibias could be used to analyse injury risk to the lower leg during impact events, but their failure mode must be validated by way of comparative tests to human bone. Synthetic tibias were instrumented with strain gauges and subjected to axial impact loading. Two different projectile masses were used for the tests, and the effects of force, momentum, and energy on failure were compared

Osteoid osteoma is a primary, benign, bone tumor with a typical X-ray appearance. The diagnosis is usually straightforward when it involves the long bones of the leg. However it may occur in unusual locations, such as in flat and cancellous bones. The following case demonstrates the difficulty in diagnosing it in an extremely rare site. A 25-year-old woman with long-standing anterior, right knee pain had had 3 interventions: 2 diagnostic arthroscopies and a distal, femoral biopsy. Since there had been no improvement in her condition, the diagnosis of osteoid osteoma of the patella was suggeste

The uniaxial tibial loading model is commonly used to promote bone formation through mechanoadaptation in mice. Sciatic neurectomy on the other hand recruits osteoclasts, which results in bone loss. Previous studies have shown that combining sciatic neurectomy with high magnitude loading increases the amount of bone formed. Here we determine whether low-intensity loading (low magnitude and few cycles) is sufficient to maintain bone mass after sciatic neurectomy, either by promoting bone formation (balance between concurrent resorption and formation), or by preventing bone resorption altogether

UNLABELLED: Older women with low bone mass are at higher risk of fracture and there is limited data on what is associated with risk of falls. We found explosive jumping to relate most strongly to postural control. It may be beneficial to include power or speed training into falls prevention programs.
INTRODUCTION: Post-menopausal women with low bone mass are at higher risk of bone fractures subsequent to falls. Understanding the correlates of postural control in this collective informs intervention design for falls prevention.
METHODS: We examined postural control in single-leg stance on sta

Giraffes have remarkably long and slender limb bones, but it is unknown how they grow with regard to body mass, sex, and neck length. In this study, we measured the length, mediolateral (ML) diameter, craniocaudal (CC) diameter and circumference of the humerus, radius, metacarpus, femur, tibia, and metatarsus in 10 fetuses, 21 females, and 23 males of known body masses. Allometric exponents were determined and compared. We found the average bone length increased from 340 ± 50 mm at birth to 700 ± 120 mm at maturity, while average diameters increased from 30 ± 3 to 70 ± 11 mm. Fetal bones incre

BACKGROUND: Delays in bone age, the onset of puberty, and skeletal growth in gymnasts could be, in part, the reason for an interest in gymnastics, rather than being the result of vigorous exercise. We hypothesized that short stature and delayed bone age are present at the start of gymnastics, and training delays growth, producing short stature, even after retirement.
METHODS: Sitting height and leg length were measured in 83 active female gymnasts, 42 retired gymnasts, and 154 healthy control subjects. Results were expressed as age-specific SD scores (mean +/- SEM).
RESULTS: In the cross-sec

Visual evaluation of bone changes around an osseointegration (OI) implant in femoral amputees examined on plain radiographs shows that periprosthetic bone resorption takes place during the first years after OI surgery, but the bone mineral density (BMD) change has not been previously quantified by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Precision is vital when monitoring BMD changes around implants, and thus the aim of this study was to evaluate the precision and feasibility of a scan protocol for BMD measurements in proximity of OI implants. The proximal part of 2 human cadaveric femoral bone

INTRODUCTION: Nonunion after open fracture of the lower leg is a frequent complication with a prevalence of up to 40%. In cases with major bone defects, revision of the osteosynthesis with bone grafting is commonly performed. Until today, there is no report on treatment of a tibial nonunion with transplantation of a heterotopic ossification.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a case of a 27-year-old male patient, who suffered from a paragliding accident with major injuries. An open fracture of the lower leg (Gustilo-Anderson IIIB) was initially treated with external fixation and vacuum-assisted

Treatment of segmental tibial bone defects after high-energy trauma or atrophic nonunion resection is challenging. In the last two decades, distraction osteogenesis Ilizarov bone transport has become a gold standard for the treatment of segmental tibial bone defects and lengthening in spite of the fact that frequent frame modifications and the need for sequential correction of deformities during bone transport are the main limitations of the device itself. The Taylor Spatial Frame applies the concept of the Stewart platform to the standard Ilizarov frame while applying the same principles of d

The management of high-energy trauma to the foot often requires multiple tissues reconstructive procedures with various technical options. The authors report the case of a patient presenting an extensive defect of the medioplantar region of the right foot involving an almost complete (90%) medial cuneiform bone loss. A deferred operation with saphenous cross-leg flap and interposition of a cement spacer was first performed. Reconstruction of the bone defect with corticocancellous iliac bone graft was subsequently carried out at two months post-trauma. At four months follow-up, the bone and sof

Seventy-nine open tibial fractures were treated with unilateral uniplanar tubular external fixators. Excellent stability allowed early weight-bearing. All comminuted fractures, with or without bone loss, and some transverse or short oblique fractures with intermediate fragments were treated by early bone grafting through a posterolateral approach. The external fixator was dynamised as soon as periosteal callus was seen on the radiograph. Bone healing times ranged from 11 to 40 weeks (mean 20). Significant ankle stiffness occurred in 10.9% and leg shortening in 2.8%. Pin track infection was see

We measured prospectively early changes (0-6 months) in bone mineral of the hip, the lumbar spine, and the tibia following tibial shaft fractures (n = 12), and in a cross-sectional study we evaluated the maximal amount of bone loss possible at the hip and tibia following long-term (average 3 years) impaired limb function as a consequence of complicated tibial shaft fractures [delayed union or nonunion (n = 7), chronic osteomyelitis (n = 5), decreased limb length (n = 1), or bone defect (n = 1)]. Bone mineral measurements were performed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Following tibial shaf
