A case of a leiomyosarcoma developing in a penile prepuce of a young patient is presented with ultrastructural studies. The firm, well-circumscribed nodule was present for several years. Histologically and ultrastructurally the excised nodule showed features of a leiomyosarcoma. The incidence and morphology of this rare tumor is discussed.

The case records and histologic material of 28 patients with leiomyosarcoma of soft tissue treated at M. D. Anderson Hospital between 1948 and 1975 were reviewed. These included patients in whom the tumors arose in the retroperitoneum (16), major blood vessels (3), and other soft-tissue sites, collectively designated peripheral soft tissue (9). Follow-up was complete in all cases. A striking preponderance of female patients was observed in the group with retroperitoneal tumors, in contrast to the male preponderance in the vascular and peripheral soft tissue tumor groups. Tumor size and locatio…

One case of embryonal paratesticular sarcoma and 2 cases of leiomyosarcomas are reported. The 13-year-old boy with embryonal sarcoma is well after an orchiectomy and high ligation of the spermatic cord followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. A 66-year-old man has been doing well after orchiectomy and hemiscrotectomy for a paratesticular leiomyosarcoma. The third patient had a highly pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma and died 2 months postoperatively. The clinical and histological diagnosis of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas is reviewed and the various therapeutic approaches to…

The occurrence of leiomyosarcoma was demonstrated in a tissue cylinder obtained by liver biopsy in a 68-year-old woman with unclear hepatomegaly. The patient died 8 months after she had experienced first signs of illness. Autopsy revealed a primary leiomyosarcoma of the liver with metastases in the lungs, bilaterally in the pleura, in the kidneys, and in the periportal and spleno-pancreatic lymph nodes. The occurrence of a primary tumour in the urogenital system or in the gastrointestinal-tract could be excluded. The diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma was based on the microscopical demonstration of s…

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the lower urinary tract (LUT) is a rare and aggressive malignancy derived from smooth muscle cells. It most commonly arises in the bladder, is less frequent in the prostate, and exceptionally rare in the urethra. The disease typically affects adults around the sixth decade of life with a slight male predominance. Etiology remains unclear, although previous radiotherapy or exposure to specific chemotherapeutic agents has been implicated. Clinical presentation is often nonspecific and may resemble more prevalent urinary tract diseases, contributing to delaye…

Leiomyosarcomas are malignant soft tissue tumors that can arise nearly anywhere in the body. These tumors may rarely originate within the retroperitoneum and may be found incidentally or present with nonspecific symptoms due to mass effect on abdominal or pelvic organs. The presentation of a leiomyosarcoma with a massively elevated CA 19-9 level is exceedingly rare with only one other report in the literature. This presentation makes for a diagnostic challenge, especially in the presence of metastatic disease to adjacent organ systems, and often requires a tissue sample obtained with core need…

Small bowel malignant tumours make only 2% of all gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies. Small bowel leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is further rare, accounts for only 0.1%-3% fraction of these tumours. These cases can present as asymptomatic intra-abdominal mass, anaemia due to GI bleed or acute abdomen such as perforation peritonitis, intussusception and bowel ischaemia. Standard of care is surgical resection. Our case presented as large lobulated exophytic ileal LMS measuring 10.8×11×14.7 cm involving multiple small bowel loops and abutting right iliac vessels and uterus. Patient's clinical course was co…

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare tumor. It has not been established if these tumors arise de novo or from pre-existing leiomyomas (LM). We report a case herein of LMS arising from a subserosal LM. A 47-year-old nulliparous woman was diagnosed with a uterine tumor measuring 30 cm in diameter by pelvic magnetic resonance imaging. Serum CA-125 level was 369 U/mL, and the lactate dehydrogenase level was elevated (565 IU/L, respectively). Positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed abnormal uptake (SUVmax = 25.29) of the abdominal tumor. Upon laparotomy, a large tumor with solid…

Sarcomas that arise from the spermatic cord constitute 2.1% of soft tissue sarcomas and are observed at a rate of 1% to 2% in the genitourin … size within the hernial sac. A radical orchiectomy and hernia repair were performed. A diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma was made based on the pathological evaluation of the mass. At the 7-month postoperative follow-up, no local relapse or distant metastasis was found. To conclude, although paratesticular leiomyosarcoma is rare, it should be kept in mind as one of the …

Leiomyosarcomas (LMS) of the ovarian vein are extremely rare and have a poor prognosis. Only 10 cases have been reported since 1977. The patient is a 69-year-old woman presented with right abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed a regularly shaped tumor, 80 mm in diameter in the retroperitoneum, adjacent to the descending part of the duodenum. Intraoperatively, the right ovarian vein was found to run through the tumor and was, therefore, resected together with the tumor. Pathological examination revealed a LMS of the right ovarian vein. Nine months postoperatively, multiple lung metastases …

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm that shows smooth muscle differentiation. It is the second most common sarcoma to affect the retroperitoneum. Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcomas may grow to large sizes before detection and may be an incidental finding at imaging. When symptomatic, retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma may cause compressive symptoms, including pain. Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma most commonly manifests as a large soft-tissue mass, with areas of necrosis. The most frequent pattern of growth is an entirely extravascular mass. Less commonly, leiomyosarcoma may demonstrate both extrav…

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that act as regulators of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. They play a key role in several biological processes. Their abnormal expression may lead to malignant cell transformation. This study aimed to evaluate the expression profile of 84 miRNAs involved in tumorigenesis in immortalized cells of myometrium (MM), uterine leiomyoma (ULM), and uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS). Specific cell lines were cultured and qRT-PCR was performed. Thirteen miRNAs presented different expression profiles in ULM and the same thirteen in ULMS compared…

It is important to distinguish between leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLS) in the retroperitoneum. The dedifferentiated component of DDLS shows an LMS-like morphology in some cases; thus, detailed evaluation is necessary to achieve an accurate diagnosis. Immunohistochemically, MDM2 and myogenic markers provide clues for the diagnoses. However, immunoreactivity for MDM2 and myogenic markers has not been well studied in retroperitoneal LMS and DDLS. Here, we compared the clinicopathological data of 20 retroperitoneal tumors initially diagnosed as LMS with that of 36 case…

Uterine sarcomas are rare cancers characterized by clinical and histological polymorphism. They are malignant tumors of poor prognosis. Inaugural manifestation of acute abdomen with hemo-pneumoperitoneum and spontaneous uterine rupture remains exceptional. The authors report the case of a uterine leiomyosarcoma manifesting itself as an inaugural generalized acute peritonitis in a 43 year old woman. Uterine rupture due to malignant tumor was suspected during urgent preoperative imaging (ultrasound and CT scan) and confirmed histologically.

We report a case of a large intra-aortic thrombosis in an 83-year-old woman concurrent with metastatic mediastinal leiomyosarcoma. Imaging studies incidentally detected a mediastinal malignant tumour metastasising to bilateral adrenals and an extensive intra-aortic mass that was suspected to be intra-aortic thrombosis. One month later massive embolism developed in the lower limb and her condition deteriorated rapidly resulting in death. Autopsy revealed diffused proliferation of highly pleomorphic atypical cells accompanied by necrosis in the mediastinum tumours and bilateral adrenal glands. L…
