This represents the largest case of skin necrosis related to levamisole, a common cocaine contaminant, requiring closure with skin grafts, and is the only case resulting in nasal amputation, central upper lip excision, extremity bone necrosis, and above knee amputation. The case report is followed by a review of the literature. OBJECTIVE: Three commonly used antihelmenthic drugs including Dormectin (0.2 mg/kg), Ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg) and Levamisole (7.5 mg/kg) were examined for their antihelmenthic efficacy against experimental Trichinella spiralis infection in rats.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty rats were orally infected with 500 T. spiralis larvae. Drugs were tested against adult worms at 4th day, against migrating larvae at 10th days and against encysted larvae at 35th day post infection (dpi). Rats were sacrificed five days post treatment. Oesophagostomum bifurcum has recently been recognized as a common parasite of man in northern Togo and in Ghana. In a preliminary trial several anthelmintics were evaluated in the treatment of mixed Oesophagostomum and hookworm infections. Diagnosis was based on faecal culture, since the eggs of Oesophagostomum and hookworm cannot be distinguished morphologically. Fifteen patients of lepromatous leprosy within first 6 months of diagnosis were studied. 7 controls received standard DDS treatment and placebo while 8 patients received cyclical levamisole treatment (150 mg daily for 3 days repeated after a gap of 2 weeks), in addition to standard DDS treatment. Patients were followed up clinically for lepra reactions, serial B.I. and DNCB test for 2 years. Nematode anthelminthic resistance is widespread for the 3 major drug classes commonly used in agriculture: benzamidazoles, macrocyclic lactones, and nicotinic agonists e.g. levamisole.
