He's home, but he's not the same: a pastoral counseling impression of family care after combat related traumatic brain injury.

As the occurrence of direct contact with heavy improvised explosive devices has increased in Operation Enduring Freedom, more and more veterans are returning home from combat deployment with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Although these injuries are associated with many different neurological, physiological, and emotional symptoms, perhaps most difficult for families is the phenomenon of perceived personality change. This article examines common clinical interventions in treating personality change associated with TBI, and offers pastoral context and insights for complementary care with famil

Adverse family experiences and flourishing amongst children ages 6-17 years: 2011/12 National Survey of Children's Health.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are prevalent in the population and linked to various negative long-term health and social consequences. However, due to the retrospective nature of most studies on the topic, little is currently known regarding ACEs' immediate health impact. This study aims to provide insight into this area by examining the association between a new measurement, Adverse Family Experiences (AFEs), and flourishing amongst children ages 6-17 years in the United States. Data from the 2011/12 National Survey of Children's Health were analyzed. Adjusted prevalence ratios assesse

Psychosocial factors related to posttraumatic growth in breast cancer survivors: a review.

In this article, we reviewed quantitative studies regarding psychosocial factors associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG) in patients with breast cancer to elucidate our understanding of a model of PTG process. PsycInfo, Embase, Medline, Web of Knowledge were used for the search. Only quantitative, English written studies that used the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) measure administered to breast cancer patients were included. The initial search yielded 90 publications. Of those, 22 studies satisfied inclusion criteria and formed the basis of the review. Personality traits (e.g., opti

[Life events, quality of life and social support prior to acute cerebral vascular disease, as predictive factors of the quality of life and functional state following stroke].

INTRODUCTION: The repercussion of stroke on quality of life has been evaluated but not the possible relation between the quality of life before and months after an acute stroke. OBJECTIVE: To study the possible relation between quality of life, social support, stressful life events prior to the stroke and quality of life, social support and functional state months after. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective study was made of 34 patients (71.7 +/- 8 years; 19 (56%) men; 15 (44%) women with stroke, by means of two evaluations: personal interview within the first 36 hours (quality of life--Nothi

Feasibility and Acceptability of Screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences in Prenatal Care.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common among pregnant women and contribute to increased risk for negative perinatal outcomes, yet few clinicians screen prenatal patients for ACEs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of screening for ACEs in standard prenatal care. METHODS: We evaluated a 4-month pilot (March 2016-June 2016) to screen pregnant women (at ∼14-23 weeks of gestation) for ACEs and resiliency in two Kaiser Permanente Northern California medical centers (N = 480). We examined the acceptability of the screening to patients

Emotional reactivity to daily positive and negative events in adulthood: The role of adverse childhood experiences.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have lasting impact on everyday emotional experiences in adulthood, with extant evidence linking ACEs to elevated emotional reactivity. However, findings are typically based on reactivity to negative daily events (i.e., stressors) and its moderation by cumulative ACEs (where individual adversities are summed into a total score), which overlooks adversity-specific associations and reactivity to other types of daily events. We therefore examine cumulative and individual ACEs as moderators of emotional reactivity to positive and negative daily events. Data wer

Optimism/pessimism and associations with life event perceptions.

Optimism is the generalized sense that good things will happen in the future, and people higher in optimism typically experience a host of positive personal and relational outcomes. However, when ostensibly important life events happen to optimists and pessimists, they rarely change their perspective about the future. One potential reason optimists are resilient to life circumstances is that they might vary in how they perceive those circumstances. Another source of confusion is whether these perceptions are driven by optimistic thinking per se or the lack of pessimistic thinking. In the curre

How people with major depression adjust their expectations of future life events in response to other patients' reports of the positive effects of psychotherapy.

Research proposed the devaluation of positive information, referred to as cognitive immunisation, as a mechanism underlying the persistence of negative expectations in depression. In a pre-registered experimental study, we tested this hypothesis by enhancing vs. inhibiting the engagement in cognitive immunisation and comparing it with a distraction control condition and a no-instruction control condition. In a between-subjects design, we presented participants with major depression (N = 156) with video recordings of other patients in which they reported on the positive effects of psychotherapy

Borderline personality traits mediate the relationship between negative life events and nonsuicidal self-injury in a clinical sample with youth depression.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality traits play a significant role in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), particularly in depressed youths. NSSI is also highly correlated with negative life events. This research aimed to explore the connections between negative life events, borderline personality traits, and NSSI. METHODS: The study included 338 depressed youth aged 13 to 25 years. Self-reported measures and clinical interviews were utilized to evaluate the depressive symptoms, borderline personality traits, negative life events, and NSSI behaviours of these participants. Atopic dermatitis across the life course.

Atopic dermatitis, the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease, can occur at any age, and patterns of disease activity vary over time. Both prevalence and incidence are highest in infancy and early childhood, followed by a second peak in older adulthood. Birth cohort studies from European countries following children through adolescence have identified subgroups of patients with early-onset persistent disease, early-onset resolving disease, and later-onset disease. Parental history of atopy and genetic factors are among the most consistent predictors of more persistent disease. Studies h

A life course health development model of HIV vulnerabilities and resiliencies in young transgender women in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Globally transgender women (TW) are at heightened vulnerability for HIV infection. In Lima Peru, sharp increases in HIV prevalence are seen among TW ages 25 years and older highlighting the need for early HIV prevention efforts for young TW. This study conducted in-depth qualitative interviews to elucidate the social and developmental contexts of HIV vulnerability for young TW in Lima Peru. METHODS: Between November 2019 and February 2020, young TW ages 16-24 years (n = 21) in Lima Peru were purposively sampled using in-person (e.g., face-to-face outreach) and online (e.g., social

Life course history of physical and sexual abuse is associated with cardiovascular disease risk among women living with and without HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual and physical abuse predict cardiovascular disease (CVD) among women in the general population. Women living with HIV (WLWH) report more abuse and have higher CVD risk compared with other women, yet associations between abuse history and CVD have not been considered among WLWH. This study fills this gap, and describes possible pathways linking abuse to CVD risk among WLWH and women living without HIV (WLWOH). METHODS: Using 25 years of data from the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS; n  = 2734; WLWH n  = 1963; WLWOH n  = 771), we used longitudinal generalized estimating equ

Traumatic life experiences and post-traumatic stress symptoms in middle-aged and older adults with and without autistic traits.

OBJECTIVES: Research with younger adults has begun to explore associations between autism/autistic traits and vulnerability to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Large scale studies and/or examination of age-effects have not been conducted. METHODS: Adults aged 50 years+ from the PROTECT study (n = 20,220) completed items about current and childhood socio-communicative difficulties characteristic of autism. Approximately 1% (n = 251) endorsed high autistic traits, henceforth the Autism Spectrum Traits (AST) group. Differences between the AST and an age-and sex-matched "Comparison Older Ad

Immigrant women living homeless in Madrid (Spain).

Homeless people are one of the most obvious embodiments of the phenomenon of social exclusion, and homeless immigrants and homeless women are considered 2 particularly vulnerable groups. The objective of this article is to analyze the differences between women living homeless born in Spain (nonimmigrants) and those born abroad (immigrants). The study was carried out based on the data obtained from a sample of women living homeless in Madrid (Spain; N = 136). The information was collected using a structured interview. The results show major similarities between immigrant and nonimmigrant homele

The association between chronic psychological stress and uterine fibroids risk: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

The association between chronic psychological stress and uterine fibroids (UFs) risk remains unclear. In this study, a meta-analysis of observational studies was performed to explore the reported association between them. A literature search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science to identify relevant published articles. A random-effect model was used to examine pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Additionally, subgroup analyses and two-stage random-effect dose-response meta-analysis were performed. A total of six articles with seven studies were included in th

Dynamic associations between borderline personality disorder and stressful life events over five years in older adults.

The time course of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is far more variable than traditionally assumed. Shifting environmental conditions are theorized to account, at least in part, for fluctuations in symptom presentation over time. In the present study, we evaluated the reciprocal influences of stressful life events and borderline pathology in a representative community sample of 1,630 older adults assessed 3 times over 5 years. An autoregressive cross-lagged model revealed strong, but imperfect, stability in symptoms of BPD over the study time frame. After adjusting for this continuity in

Stressful life events and maltreatment in conversion (functional neurological) disorder: systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events and maltreatment have traditionally been considered crucial in the development of conversion (functional neurological) disorder, but the evidence underpinning this association is not clear. We aimed to assess the association between stressors and functional neurological disorder. METHODS: We systematically reviewed controlled studies reporting stressors occurring in childhood or adulthood, such as stressful life events and maltreatment (including sexual, physical abuse, and emotional neglect) and functional neurological disorder. We did a meta-analysis, with

Adverse Life Experience and Psychological Distress in Adolescence: Moderating and Mediating Effects of Emotion Regulation and Rumination.

The current study tested whether emotion regulation and rumination moderated and/or mediated the relationship between accumulated adverse life experience and psychological distress in adolescence. In class, Australian high school students (n = 2637, 12-18 years, 68% female) from 41 schools completed well-validated measures of adverse life experience, emotion regulation, rumination and psychological distress, and were followed up 1 year later (n = 1973, 75% retention rate). Adjusting for age, gender and baseline psychological distress, adverse life experience predicted psychological distress 1
