Lifting effect of onabotulinumtoxinA in patients treated for glabellar and crow's feet rhytids.

OnabotulinumtoxinA injection can enhance the appearance of the eyes. This study evaluated the lifting effect of onabotulinumtoxinA treatment of the eye area. A retrospective, single-center audit of patients treated for glabellar and crow's feet rhytids was undertaken. Standardized photographs taken before and 2-4 weeks after treatment were assessed. Computer-based measurements were made of the height of the visible superior tarsal plate (STP) and brow (measured from upper eyelid lash edge to eyebrow base) at rest and maximum frown. One hundred patients were included (96 females; mean age: 46.2…

A deep learning approach for lower back-pain risk prediction during manual lifting.

Occupationally-induced back pain is a leading cause of reduced productivity in industry. Detecting when a worker is lifting incorrectly and at increased risk of back injury presents significant possible benefits. These include increased quality of life for the worker due to lower rates of back injury and fewer workers' compensation claims and missed time for the employer. However, recognizing lifting risk provides a challenge due to typically small datasets and subtle underlying features in accelerometer and gyroscope data. A novel method to classify a lifting dataset using a 2D convolutional …

Cumulative Mass and NIOSH Variable Lifting Index Method for Risk Assessment: Possible Relations.

Objective The aim of this study was to explore whether the Variable Lifting Index (VLI) can be corrected for cumulative mass and thus test its efficacy in predicting the risk of low-back pain (LBP). Background A validation study of the VLI method was published in this journal reporting promising results. Although several studies highlighted a positive correlation between cumulative load and LBP, cumulative mass has never been considered in any of the studies investigating the relationship between manual material handling and LBP. Method Both VLI and cumulative mass were calculated for 2,374 ex…

Measuring lifting forces in rock climbing: effect of hold size and fingertip structure.

This study investigates the hypothesis that shallow edge lifting force in high-level rock climbers is more strongly related to fingertip soft tissue anatomy than to absolute strength or strength to body mass ratio. Fifteen experienced climbers performed repeated maximal single hand lifting exercises on rectangular sandstone edges of depth 2.8, 4.3, 5.8, 7.3, and 12.5 mm while standing on a force measurement platform. Fingertip soft tissue dimensions were assessed by ultrasound imaging. Shallow edge (2.8 and 4.3 mm) lifting force, in newtons or body mass normalized, was uncorrelated with deep e…

Evaluation of a palatal lift prosthesis with a flexible lift in a lower cranial nerve palsy patient with dysphagia using high-resolution manometry: A case report.

Patient Palatal lift prostheses (PLPs) are used for dysarthria caused by velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI) and improving hypernasal speech. In this case, we used a PLP with a flexible lift (f-PLP) in a patient with dysphagia associated with VPI due to right-sided cranial nerve injuries after a skull base surgery. We examined its efficacy in swallowing biomechanics and swallowing function using high-resolution manometry (HRM) and videofluoroscopic examination of swallowing (VF). The patient felt that it was easier to swallow with f-PLP. Furthermore, VF indicated that the pharyngeal residue with

Lift-CM: An integrated lift-heater centrifugal microfluidic platform for point-of-care pathogen nucleic acid detection using isothermal amplification and CRISPR/Cas12a.

Pathogen nucleic acid detection technology based on isothermal amplification and CRISPR/Cas12a system offers advantages in terms of high sensitivity, high specificity, and rapidity. However, this method has not been widely applied because of its shortcomings in utilizing conventional instruments, which cannot satisfy the requirements for Point of Care Testing (POCT), such as integration, convenience, and miniaturization. In this study, we developed an integrated lift-heater centrifugal microfluidic platform (Lift-CM) to automate the processes of isothermal amplification and CRISPR/Cas12a detec

Maximum acceptable weight of lift reflects peak lumbosacral extension moments in a functional capacity evaluation test using free style, stoop and squat lifting.

UNLABELLED: It is unclear whether the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), a common psychophysical method, reflects joint kinetics when different lifting techniques are employed. In a within-participants study (n = 12), participants performed three lifting techniques--free style, stoop and squat lifting from knee to waist level--using the same dynamic functional capacity evaluation lifting test to assess MAWL and to calculate low back and knee kinetics. We assessed which knee and back kinetic parameters increased with the load mass lifted, and whether the magnitudes of the kinetic paramet…

Concurrent validity of markerless motion capture for occupational lifting: Kinematics and ergonomic risk assessment.

Markerless motion capture has the potential to enhance ergonomic risk assessment, but evidence remains limited for occupational manual handling tasks of increasing complexity. This study compared a multi-view system (OpenCap) and a monocular system (MediaPipe) against a marker-based reference system (Vicon) for lifting kinematics. Outcomes were assessed using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) risk assessment tool. Twenty healthy participants performed three two-handed lifting tasks of increasing complexity under controlled laboratory conditions. Errors increased by 15-30% from symmetrica…

Suture remnant-induced sialolithiasis and suppurative parotitis: A delayed complication following facial thread lifting.

Facial thread lifting is a popular, minimally invasive procedure for facial rejuvenation. While most complications are mild and self-limiting, severe adverse events may occur rarely. Injury to the parotid gland or its ducts represents a serious complication, particularly when leading to delayed sequelae such as sialolithiasis. We present the case of a 45‑year‑old female who developed acute suppurative parotitis and sialolithiasis three years after facial thread lifting. The patient received antibiotic therapy followed by surgical removal of the calculi. Intraoperatively, suture remnants were i…

Stensen' s duct penetration and sialolith formation: a rare complication of thread lifting surgery.

Sialolithiasis is a relatively frequent occurrence, but the etiology of sialoliths remains unclear. Foreign bodies might enter the salivary duct and induce sialoliths by retrograde migration or penetrating trauma. Several reports have involved salivary duct stones formed around a foreign body, such as fishbone, vegetable seed, grass blade, et al. However, an iatrogenic foreign body-induced sialolith is scarcely reported. Thread lifting is a minimally invasive technique for facial rejuvenation with the advantages of short recovery, good-lifting and high satisfaction rate. The injury of the Sten…

Biomechanical analysis of different back-supporting exoskeletons regarding musculoskeletal loading during lifting and holding.

Industrial back support exoskeletons (BSEs) are a promising approach to addressing low back pain (LBP) which still affect a significant proportion of the workforce. They aim to reduce lumbar loading, the main biomechanical risk factor for LBP, by providing external support to the lumbar spine. The aim of this study was to determine the supporting effect of one active (A1) and two passive (P1 and P2) BSEs during different manual material handling tasks. Kinematic data and back muscle activity were collected from 12 subjects during dynamic lifting and static holding of 10 kg. Mean and peak L5/S1…

A Novel Passive Back-Support Exoskeleton With a Spring-Cable-Differential for Lifting Assistance.

Lower back injuries are the most common work-related musculoskeletal disorders. As a wearable device, a back-support exoskeleton (BSE) can reduce the risk of lower back injuries and passive BSEs can achieve a low device weight. However, with current passive BSEs, there is a problem that the user must push against the device when lifting the leg to walk, which is perceived as particularly uncomfortable due to the resistance. To solve this problem, we propose a novel passive BSE that can automatically distinguish between lifting and walking. A unique spring-cable-differential acts as a torque ge…

Utility of Novel Clavicle-lifting Technique in Mediastinal Thyroid Surgery: A Case Series Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Symptomatic mediastinal goitre requires surgery and is usually resectable using the cervical approach alone; however, sternotomy is occasionally required. Sternotomy is a highly invasive procedure, and its complications, including mediastinitis and osteomyelitis, can be critical. To date, there have been no reports of non-invasive techniques to avoid sternotomy for mediastinal thyroid tumours. We investigated the safety and efficacy of thyroidectomy using the clavicle lifting technique with a paediatric Kent hook. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 8 patie…
