Percentage distribution of fatty acids in subcutaneous adipose tissue of patients with peptic ulcer disease.

Dietary linoleic acid has been implicated in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease because its metabolite arachidonic acid may be converted to cytoprotective prostaglandins. In addition, it has been suggested that the falling incidence and virulence of duodenal ulcer disease is related to increased dietary polyunsaturated essential fatty acid intake. In the present study the percentage content of linoleic acid in subcutaneous adipose tissue microbiopsies were used to see whether changes in percentage of fatty acids correlate with the presence or absence of an ulcer in individual patients. Castration reshapes the liver by altering fatty acid composition and metabolism in male mice.

Castration promotes subcutaneous fat deposition that may be associated with metabolic adaptations in the liver. However, fatty acid composition, abundance, and metabolic characteristics of the liver after castration are not fully understood. Our results showed that surgical castration significantly reduced water and food intake, reduced liver weight, and induced liver inflammation in mice. Transcriptome analyses revealed that castration enhanced fatty acid metabolism, particularly that of arachidonic and linoleic acids metabolism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed that cas…

PUFA and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy: a two-sample Mendelian randomisation analysis.

This study aimed to explore the potential causal association between PUFA and the risk of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) using Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis. A two-sample MR analysis was conducted utilising large-scale European-based genome-wide association studies summary databases. The primary MR analysis was carried out using the inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method, complemented by other methods such as MR-egger, weighted-median and weighted mode. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to validate the robustness of the findings. Results indicated a 31 % reduced risk

Essential fatty acid requirements of cats: pathology of essential fatty acid deficiency.

The pathologic changes of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency were studied in specific-pathogen-free, domestic shorthair cats which were fed purified diets for 1.5 to 2.5 years. Cats fed an EFA-deficient diet exhibited signs of deficiency: severe fatty degeneration of the liver, excessive fat in the kidneys, dystrophic mineralization of the adrenal glands, degeneration of the testes, and hyperkeratosis of the skin. Minor clinical pathologic changes were consistent with liver damage. Fatty acid analyses of plasma lipids revealed low concentrations of linoleate and other n6-fatty acids, and hi

Fatty acids and monoacylglycerols inhibit growth of Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus causes a variety of human infections including toxic shock syndrome, osteomyelitis, and mastitis. Mastitis is a common disease in the dairy cow, and S. aureus has been found to be a major infectious organism causing mastitis. The objectives of this research were to determine which FA and esterified forms of FA were inhibitory to growth of S. aureus bacteria. FA as well as their mono-, di-, and triacylglycerol forms were tested for their ability to inhibit a human toxic shock syndrome clinical isolate (MN8) and two S. aureus clinical bovine mastitis isolates (305 and Novel

Towards an attract-and-kill strategy for sustainable tick control: combined effects of Metarhizium anisopliae and phytochemical attractants from Senna didymobotrya against Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus.

Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus are ticks of veterinary and zoonotic importance in sub-Saharan Africa. Presently, their control mainly relies on synthetic acaricides, which are limited by resistance and environmental harm. Sustainable alternatives, such as combining tick attractants with entomopathogenic fungi in attract-and-kill strategies, are therefore needed. This study aimed to determine (i) the effect of attractants from Senna didymobotrya (methanol extract of S. didymobotrya flowers, squalene, linoleic acid, and squalene: linoleic acid (1:1) blend) on Metarhizium a

Dim light during darkness stimulates tumor progression by enhancing tumor fatty acid uptake and metabolism.

Tumor linoleic acid uptake and metabolism, and growth are suppressed by melatonin, the synthesis of which is inhibited by light. Linoleic acid, via its mitogenic metabolite 13-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (13-HODE) is an important growth stimulant of rat hepatoma 7288CTC. Here we compared the effects of an alternating light:dark cycle (12L:12D), dim light (0.25 lux) present during the dark phase of a diurnal light cycle, and constant light on growth and fatty acid metabolism in hepatoma 7288CTC. Our results show that dim light suppressed melatonin release by the pineal gland, increased tumor li

Modification of fish oil triglycerides into 1,2,3-triazole-fatty acid esters as potent antitubercular agents.

This study aimed to develop 1,2,3-triazole derivatives from fish oil triglycerides as potential antitubercular agents. The synthetic route consisted of three main steps: hydrolysis of fish oil to obtain free fatty acids (2, yield 86%), propargylation of the free fatty acids to produce propargyl esters (3, yield 59%), and azide-alkyne [3 + 2] cycloaddition of the propargyl esters to afford 1,2,3-triazole esters (5, yield 85%). Linoleic acid was identified as the predominant fatty acid. All compounds were characterized using FTIR, NMR, and HRMS analyses. The final compound (5) demonstrated moder

[Changes in the free fatty acid composition of rat salivary glands induced by chronic administration of isoproterenol].

The major constituent free fatty acid in rat parotid and submandibular glands was palmitic acid (about 40% of the total), followed by saturated and unsaturated fatty acids with 18 carbon atoms and arachidonic acid. The composition was changed by chronic administration of isoproterenol, with an increase of linoleic acid and a decrease of arachidonic acid coinciding with changes in the acyl composition of phospholipids. With respect to the metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids, delta 6-desaturation activity converting linoleic acid to gamma-linolenic acid was detected using [14C]linoleoyl-CoA in

The fatty acid imbalance of cystic fibrosis exists at birth independent of feeding in pig and ferret models.

Persons with cystic fibrosis (CF) exhibit a unique alteration of fatty acid composition, marked especially among polyunsaturates by relative deficiency of linoleic acid and excess of Mead acid. Relative deficiency of docosahexaenoic acid is variably found. However, the initial development of these abnormalities is not understood. We examined fatty acid composition in young CF ferrets and pigs, finding abnormalities from the day of birth onward including relative deficiency of linoleic acid in both species. Fatty acid composition abnormalities were present in both liver and serum phospholipids

Differential effects of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids on vascular reactivity in isolated mesenteric and femoral arteries of rats.

Free fatty acid (FFA) intake regulates blood pressure and vascular reactivity but its direct effect on contractility of systemic arteries is not well understood. We investigated the effects of saturated fatty acid (SFA, palmitic acid), polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA, linoleic acid), and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA, oleic acid) on the contractility of isolated mesenteric (MA) and deep femoral arteries (DFA) of Sprague-Dawley rats. Isolated MA and DFA were mounted on a dual wire myograph and phenylephrine (PhE, 1-10 µM) concentration-dependent contraction was obtained with or without FFAs

Degradation of extracellular matrix by larvae of Schistosoma mansoni. I. Degradation by cercariae as a model for initial parasite invasion of host.

We have examined the ability of cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni to degrade a model extracellular connective tissue matrix produced by rat vascular smooth muscle cells in culture. In this model, connective tissue macromolecules are present in the interactive framework that characterizes their structure in vivo. Cercariae were stimulated to degrade the matrix by skin lipid or linoleic acid. At the maximally stimulating concentration of linoleic acid (25 micrograms/cm2), 68% of the total matrix was degraded, including 57% of the glycoprotein, 79% of the elastin, and 8% of the collagen. Ions and low molecular weight components in sulfite pulp mills strongly reduce or boost lipases activity on lipophilic wood extractives.

Lipophilic wood extractives (LWEs), including triterpenes, fatty acids, resin acids, waxes, alcohols, sterols, sterol esters, and glycerides, pose significant challenges for pulp and paper mills. Microbial triacylglycerol lipases (EC 3.1.1.3), stable at high temperatures and pH, offer a solution by hydrolyzing detrimental triglycerides into free fatty acids, which can be solubilized in alkaline environments. However, inconsistent performance and limited understanding of process dynamics under industrial conditions have hindered their application. This study evaluated the effects of phenols, sa

Differences in Plasma Fatty Acid Composition Related to Chronic Pancreatitis: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is an inflammatory disease affecting the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients. Signaling in pancreatic cells that lead to inflammation may be influenced by fatty acids (FAs) through diet and de novo lipogenesis. Here, we investigated the relationship between plasma FA composition in CP with heterogeneity of etiology and complications of CP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood and clinical parameters were collected from subjects with CP (n = 47) and controls (n = 22). Plasma was analyzed for FA composition using gas chromatography and compared between controls and

Modulation of human erythrocyte shape and fatty acids by diet.

A semi-synthetic diet (Vivonex) was administered via nasogastric tube to three cystic fibrosis patients with pancreatic exocrine deficiency for 14 days to gain weight. Dietary essential fatty acids were provided as safflower oil, which constituted 1.3% of total calories. Plasma and red blood cells were analyzed for the content and composition of lipids at the start of the diet and at days 7 and 14 of the dietary period, and the results were correlated with the morphology of the cells. Feeding Vivonex to the patients led to an essential fatty acid deficiency, which was manifested in a 50% decre

Free Fatty Acids Correlate with the Interleukin-1 β and Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist in the Early Subacute Phase of Stroke.

Inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of ischaemic stroke both as a long-term causal factor and through the inflammatory cascade in acute stroke. Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a potent pro-inflammatory molecule, while interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) acts as its antagonist. Free fatty acids (FFAs) play a role in atherosclerosis formation and serve as substrates for inflammatory molecules. This study aimed to determine the potential interplay between FFAs, IL-1β, and IL-1Ra in stroke patients. A prospective analysis was conducted on 73 ischaemic stroke patients. All participant

Structured lipids improve fat absorption in normal and malabsorbing rats.

The presence of medium-chain fatty acids in dietary fatty acid as well as the triacylglycerol structure may influence the absorption and lymphatic transport of fatty acids. We compared the lymphatic transport and recovery of fatty acids from four intragastrically administered fats based on rapeseed oil and decanoic acid in two rat models of normal absorption and malabsorption, respectively. The fats were: 1) a fat with a regiospecific structure, 2) a similar fat but with a random distribution of fatty acids in the triacylglycerol molecule, 3) a physical mixture of tridecanoin and rapeseed oil

Fatty acid dietary intakes and blood concentrations in relation to hip fracture risk in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

Previous research suggests that dietary intake and blood levels of fatty acids may influence the risk of osteoporosis and hip fractures, although findings have been inconsistent. We conducted a meta-analysis of nine prospective cohort studies involving 382,094 participants and 12,392 hip fractures to investigate these associations. Follow-ups ranged from 7 to 24 years in duration. A hazard ratio (HR) of 1.20 (95% CI: 1.08-1.33) indicated that a higher intake of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) was associated with an increased risk of hip fractures. In contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)
