Tissue characterization and assessment of preoperative chemotherapeutic response in musculoskeletal tumors by in vivo 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

This study investigates the potential of in vivo 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to characterize musculoskeletal tumors and to determine preoperative levels of histological necrosis, which is an important clinical indicator of patient response. Pretherapy MRS was performed on 28 patients with large musculoskeletal tumors: 13 with osteosarcoma, 3 with chondrosarcoma, 5 with malignant fibrous histiocytoma, 1 with desmoid tumor, 1 with Ewing's, 2 with hemangioendothelioma, 1 with myxoid liposarcoma, 1 with synovial cell sarcoma, and 1 with rhabdomyosarcoma. Fifteen patients had follow-u

Division of Sacrospinous and Sacrotuberous Ligaments Expands Access Through Greater Sciatic Foramen: Anatomic Study with Application to Resection of Greater Sciatic Foramen Tumors.

OBJECTIVE: Tumors of the greater sciatic foramen remain difficult to treat. They often have both intrapelvic and extrapelvic components that may limit visualization and make safe resection of the tumor difficult. Therefore the goal of the present anatomic study was to quantitate how much additional surgical working space could be gained by transection of the sacrospinous and sacrotuberous ligaments. METHODS: Sixteen sides from 9 fresh-frozen Caucasian cadaveric torsos underwent transgluteal dissection and exposure of the greater sciatic foramen and associated liagments. With the piriformis in

[Nocturnal back pain; a misdiagnosed symptom of spinal tumor].

Four patients had nocturnal back pain or pain that worsened when lying down. In one of these, a 49-year-old man, the medical history mentioned a malignancy, as a result of which a spinal metastasis was suspected. In the other three patients, a 52-year old woman and two men aged 48 and 60 years, the nocturnal back pain and the back pain worsening when lying down was not recognised as indication of a spinal tumour. As objective neurological symptoms were not established at initial investigation, a long period of discomfort and frustration followed before the spinal tumour was diagnosed eventuall

Pathological response after neoadjuvant therapy in soft tissue sarcoma: A systematic review of its association with local recurrence, distant metastasis, and survival.

Histopathological response after neoadjuvant therapy is an established prognostic marker in bone sarcoma, but its significance in soft tissue sarcoma remains uncertain. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase and CENTRAL through July 3, 2026 for studies evaluating the association between pathological response and oncological outcomes in adults undergoing neoadjuvant treatment and surgery for localized soft tissue sarcoma. Risk of bias was assessed using QUIPS and certainty of evidence using GRADE. Nineteen studies comprising 2346 unique patients were included. Pathological complete response

Heterogeneity in response to neoadjuvant radiotherapy between soft tissue sarcoma histotypes: associations between radiology and pathology findings.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate imaging biomarkers of tumour response by describing changes in imaging and pathology findings after neoadjuvant radiotherapy (nRT) and exploring their correlations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tumour diameter, volume, and tumour-to-muscle signal intensity (SI) ratio were collected before and after radiotherapy in a cohort of 107 patients with intermediate/high-grade STS and were correlated with post-radiotherapy pathology findings (percentage of necrosis, viable cells, and fibrosis) using Spearman Rank test. Pathological complete response (pCR) was defined as no residual

Protocol for the 2ND-STEP study, Japan Clinical Oncology Group study JCOG1802: a randomized phase II trial of second-line treatment for advanced soft tissue sarcoma comparing trabectedin, eribulin and pazopanib.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a rare type of malignancy comprising a variety of histological diagnoses. Chemotherapy constitutes the standard treatment for advanced STS. Doxorubicin-based regimens, which include the administration of doxorubicin alone or in combination with ifosfamide or dacarbazine, are widely accepted as first-line chemotherapy for advanced STS. Trabectedin, eribulin, pazopanib, and gemcitabine plus docetaxel (GD), which is the empirical standard therapy in Japan, are major candidates for second-line chemotherapy for advanced STS, although clear evidence of the

What is the likelihood of nonpulmonary metastasis occurring in the absence of lung metastasis in bone and soft tissue sarcoma? A nested case-control from a sarcoma referral centre.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nonpulmonary metastases (NPM) are rare, associated with a poorer prognosis, and maybe missed on conventional chest imaging for sarcoma surveillance. We determined (1) the proportion of NPM occurring in isolation or with synchronous or prior pulmonary metastases (PM), and (2) if initial NPM would have been recognized with a standard surveillance protocol. METHODS: Investigators identified patients who developed initial NPM without prior evidence of or concurrent PM from an ongoing cohort of bone and soft tissue sarcoma (STS) patients. Logistic regression at univariat

Giant transverse colonic mesenteric mucinous liposarcoma combined with rectal cancer and aortic coarctation: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Liposarcomas (LPSs) are malignant mesenchymal tumors originating from adipocytes. Myxoid LPS (MLPS), a common subtype, predominantly arises in the extremities, retroperitoneum, and deep soft tissues, with a rare occurrence in the gastrointestinal tract. Primary mesenteric LPS is particularly uncommon, especially in the transverse colonic mesentery. CASE SUMMARY: This report describes the case of a 65-year-old female patient who presented with abdominal distension and was diagnosed with a giant mucinous LPS of the transverse colonic mesentery. Upon admission, the patient underwent

Present and future of whole-body MRI in metastatic disease and myeloma: how and why you will do it.

Metastatic disease and myeloma present unique diagnostic challenges due to their multifocal nature. Accurate detection and staging are critical for determining appropriate treatment. Bone scintigraphy, skeletal radiographs and CT have long been the mainstay for the assessment of these diseases, but have limitations, including reduced sensitivity and radiation exposure. Whole-body MRI has emerged as a highly sensitive and radiation-free alternative imaging modality. Initially developed for skeletal screening, it has extended tumor screening to all organs, providing morphological and physiologic

PRAME Expression in Cancer. A Systematic Immunohistochemical Study of >5800 Epithelial and Nonepithelial Tumors.

Preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma (PRAME) is considered a useful marker in the differential diagnosis between malignant melanoma and its melanocytic mimics. Recently PRAME expression was documented in nonmelanocytic tumors, but much of the data are based on mRNA studies. This investigation evaluated PRAME expression in the spectrum of normal tissues and >5800 human tumors using immunohistochemistry and EP461 monoclonal antibody. In normal tissues, PRAME was expressed in the testis and proliferative endometrium. In tumors, PRAME was variably expressed in malignancies of different lin

Primary cutaneous localized/clearly-outlined true histiocytic sarcoma: Two long-term follow-up cases.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare hematopoietic tumor that mainly involves extranodal sites, including the intestinal tract, skin, soft tissues and other organs. It is well known as an aggressive neoplasm that shows a poor response to therapy. However, a subset of patients with resectable disease has shown a favorable outcome with surgical treatment. Primary cutaneous HS is exceedingly rare and, to date, its long-term prognosis has thus not been well described. Here, we highlight two cases of primary cutaneous HS that showed long-term survival. Case 1 was a healthy 47-year-old woman who found

Next generation sequencing of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) is an indolent translocation-associated soft tissue sarcoma with a high propensity for metastases. Using a clinical sequencing approach, we genomically profiled patients with metastatic EMC to elucidate the molecular biology and identify potentially actionable mutations. We also evaluated potential predictive factors of benefit to sunitinib, a multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor with reported activity in a subset of EMC patients. Between January 31, 2012 and April 15, 2016, six patients with EMC participated in the clinical sequencing research stu

Lymphadenopathy in COVID-19 Vaccine Recipients: Diagnostic Dilemma in Oncologic Patients.

Five cases of axillary lymphadenopathy are presented, which occurred after COVID-19 vaccination and mimicked metastasis in a vulnerable oncologic patient group. Initial radiologic diagnosis raised concerns for metastasis. However, further investigation revealed that patients received COVID-19 vaccinations in the ipsilateral arm prior to imaging. In two cases, lymph node biopsy results confirmed vaccination-related reactive lymphadenopathy. Ipsilateral axillary swelling or lymphadenopathy was reported based on symptoms and physical examination in COVID-19 vaccine trials. Knowledge of the potent

Advances in 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography for soft tissue sarcomas.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare malignant tumors originating from mesodermal tissues with a poor prognosis, accounting for approximately 1% of all malignancies and comprising around 50 distinct subtypes. Conventional imaging modalities, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), primarily provide anatomical information, whereas 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT) integrates functional metabolic and anatomical imaging, serving as a critical complementary tool in the diagnosis and management of STS. This article reviews recent a

Lipoma-like hibernoma of the breast: A case report and literature review.

Hibernomas are uncommon and benign tumors made up of brown fat cells. These tumors are typically found in the thigh, axillae, shoulder, back, neck, thorax, arm, and retroperitoneum. There are 4 histological variants of hibernomas, including the typical pattern, myxoid, lipoma-like, and spindle cell variant. The lipoma-like variant is characterized by numerous univacuolated adipocytic cells with intermingled multivacuolated granular cells. It is worth noting that lipoma-like hibernoma in the breast is infrequent. In this case, we present a 72-year-old woman with a history of moderately differen

SOX11: a potentially useful marker in surgical pathology: a systematic analysis of SOX11 expression in epithelial and non-epithelial tumours.

AIMS: SOX11 is known as an essential transcription factor for regulating neurogenesis. Recently, SOX11 has been suggested to be a diagnostic marker and oncogene because of its significant expression in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). However, SOX11 expression in other tumour types has not yet been extensively studied. METHODS AND RESULTS: Herein, we examined SOX11 expression in 2026 cases of neuroectodermal, germ cell, mesenchymal and epithelial tumours by immunohistochemistry. SOX11 was consistently expressed in all neuroectodermal tumours with neural differentiation, as well as in immature tera

Current concepts in the management of retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcoma.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) in the retroperitoneum are usually diagnosed at the late stages. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment. The technique of resection is standardized. After dissection of the retroperitoneal blood vessel, a retroperitoneal plane of dissection adjacent to the spinal foramina is established in between the layers of the abdominal wall. Complete resection with tumor-free resection margins is the primary goal in retroperitoneal sarcoma surgery. Preoperative assessment of pathoanatomical growth patterns with respect to retroperitoneal vascular structures--as well as to viscera
