Guinea pigs infected by low dose aerosol with the H37Rv strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis rapidly developed granulomatous lesions in the pulmonary parenchyma and within the intra-thoracic hilar lymph node cluster. Lung lesions showed no predilection for specific lobes and were perivascular, peribronchial and peribronchiolar throughout the subpleural, hilar and pulmonary parenchyma. Marked hilar lymph node enlargement was due to coalescing foci of subcapsular, paracortical and medullary granulomatous inflammation that progressed to necrosis that effaced normal lymph node architecture. BACKGROUND: Cryptococcosis is one of the opportunistic infections in AIDS, and therefore an expeditious diagnosis is of the utmost importance since once a cryptococcal infection disseminates, it becomes life threatening.
CASE: A 40-year-old woman presented with epistaxis, fever and cervical lymphadenopathy for 20 days. Fine needle aspiration showed reactive lymphoid hyperplasia with plump, histiocytoid cells resembling metastatic deposits. The second aspirate showed ovoid to spherical, thick-walled structures that stained positive for periodic acid-Schiff stain and mucicarmine.
CONCLUSION: L

This report describes severe generalized granulomatous lymphadenitis and splenitis in a 5-year-old, spayed female, Rottweiler dog with anorexia and diarrhea. There was replacement or effacement of much of the parenchyma of the lymph nodes and spleen by sheets of macrophages, multinucleated giant cells, and myriad nonpigmented fungal organisms, most of which appeared to be intracellular. These organisms were very pleomorphic, including large chlamydospore-like cells, small round yeast-like cells, and septate hyphae. A fungus identified as Monocillium indicum was isolated from lymph node tissue.…

A healthy 14-months-old boy developed suppurative adenitis some weeks after Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) vaccination. The tumour grew rapidly, showed fluctuation and eventually incision was needed. Culture of the abscess was negative. The diagnosis was: regional lymphadenitis after BCG vaccination. This suppurative lymphadenitis is a non-serious complication of BCG vaccination and has been reported in 0.1 to 4% of those vaccinated. As the BCG vaccination is given only to the at-risk population in the Netherlands, BCG complications are rare. Non-suppurative nodal swellings are considered a no…

Localized or regional necrotizing lymphadenitis is an extremely uncommon manifestation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. We report a case of necrotizing HSV lymphadenitis in a patient with both common variable immunodeficiency and natural killer cell deficiency and review the literature on this unusual complication of HSV infection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our purpose was to describe the association between narrowing of the internal carotid artery (ICA) and retropharyngeal abscess in children.
METHODS: Neck CT scans from 13 consecutive children with suppurative retropharyngeal lymphadenitis and abscess were evaluated retrospectively for asymmetric ICA diameters at the level of the abscess. Clinical status at the time of illness was established via a chart review. Twenty control CT scans obtained from pediatric patients with normal imaging findings were evaluated prospectively to determine symmetry and size of the ICA.

A retrospective study was made of 43 consecutive cases of children with the diagnosis of non-tuberculous mycobacterial lymphadenitis treated in our surgical department between 1976 and 1992. In 16 of the 42 children the diagnosis was initially missed and these children elsewhere underwent incision and drainage resulting in a chronic sinus. In 37 children the disease was localized in the head-and-neck area, while in the other 6 inguinal or axillary lymph nodes were involved. All 43 children underwent a regional lymph node dissection with a partial parotidectomy in three. In 5 children recurrent…

A 40-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of fever, polyposia and polyuria in October 1990. The fasting blood sugar level was 471mg/dl and abdominal CT showed enlargement of the liver, kidneys, and intraabdominal lymph nodes. Although severe diabetes mellitus was controlled with insulin, intraabdominal lymph node swelling continued. Lymph node biopsy was performed under laparotomy. Four from intraabdominal lymph nodes, in addition to one from the left axillary lymph nodes. Four showed findings of non specific lymphadenitis, but one specimen obtained from near the right kidney de…

The cytologic investigation of needle biopsy material from lymphomas of unclear genesis may give valuable diagnostic references in patients with lymphadenitis toxoplasmotica. Findings of 19 patients are explained. Suspicious for a toxoplasmogenic genesis are colouredness of the cell picture with large basophilic roundnuclear cells, conspicious macrophagocytosis in reticulum cells and small-focal proliferation of the epitheloid cell. In own material these 3 criteria only 5 times appeared together. Two simultaneously existing, suspicious for Piringer's lymphadenitis findings, were shown in 11 pa…

PURPOSE: Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infections are primarily observed in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or organ transplant recipients. However, its role as a pathogen in immunocompetent adults remains debated. We aimed to explore the clinical significance of HHV-6 in immunocompetent individuals by presenting a case of HHV-6-associated meningitis with concurrent lymphadenitis.
METHOD: We describe a case of an immunocompetent adult presenting with recurrent fever and headaches.
FINDING: Diagnostic evaluations included next-generation sequ…

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare inborn error of immunity characterized by recurrent fungal and bacterial infections due to defective nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase activity. This case report describes an 11-month-old female who was initially diagnosed with tubercular lymphadenitis and presented with fever and bilateral neck swelling. Despite receiving anti-tubercular treatment (ATT) and intravenous antibiotics, the patient experienced recurrent infections and abscesses, prompting further investigation. Laboratory tests revealed normal immunoglobulin l…

Tuberculous lymphadenitis is one of the most common extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis. Lymphadenitis due to Listeria monocytogenes is rarely described. We present a case of a 59-year-old woman from Mexico presented to the Emergency Department with a 2-week history of erythematous and painful swelling in the right retromandibular area. An ultrasound-guided bedside needle aspiration of the lump was performed by an infectious diseases specialist and a diagnosis of Listeria monocytogenes and tuberculous coinfection was done. To our knowledge this is the first case of tuberculous and Lis…

Objective: To explore the clinical features and prognosis of children with histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL). Methods: The clinical data of 118 children with HNL diagnosed and treated in the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology of Children's Hospital, Capital Institute of Pediatrics from January 2014 to December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The clinical symptoms, laboratory examination, imaging examination, pathological findings, treatment and follow-up were analyzed. Results: Among the 118 patients, 69 were males and 49 were females. The age of onset was 10.0 (8.0, 12.0)…

Calvarial tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon form of TB reported in patients with mycobacterial infections. We present a case of calvarial TB in a patient with cervical TB lymphadenitis. The patient had a history of headache and swelling of the right parietal region of the skull. CT head showed peripherally enhancing small epidural collection at the right parietal region with overlying destroyed right parietal bone. Histopathology showed giant cells, lymphocytes, and caseous necrosis. We acknowledge that cervical TB lymphadenitis poses the development of calvarial TB in our patient.
