Promising biomedical applications using superparamagnetic nanoparticles.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have emerged as powerful tools in biomedicine due to their distinct physicochemical characteristics, including a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, adjustable size, magnetic sensitivity, and compatibility with biological systems. These properties enable precise control through external magnetic fields, making MNPs highly effective in targeted therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Although not inherently intelligent, they can exhibit programmable and responsive behavior under external influence, enhancing their utility in drug delivery and hyperthermia-based tre

Precision-engineered magnetic/plasmonic heterodimers for naked-eye and photothermal mpox virus diagnostics.

The global surge of mpox virus (MPXV) demands diagnostic tools that combine laboratory-grade accuracy with point-of-care simplicity. Here, we report an all-in-one lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) leveraging precision-engineered Fe3O4-Aushell heterodimers for dual-signal MPXV quantification via naked-eye readout and photothermal amplification. These monodisperse plasmonic-magnetic nanoparticles, synthesized through controlled seed-mediated heterodimerization, integrate magnetic enrichment, photothermal conversion, and tunable plasmonic resonance into a single architecture. The Fe3O4 core enables

Detection of factor Xa activity using giant magnetoresistive biosensors.

BACKGROUND: As anticoagulants are widely used to treat patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and other thrombotic conditions, it is necessary for physicians to determine whether the medication has been taken in emergencies. Among many anticoagulants, rivaroxaban has attracted attention due to its safety and convenience. Since rivaroxaban inhibits activated coagulation factor X (factor Xa), measuring factor Xa activity can determine the presence of rivaroxaban. RESULTS: We report a magnetic biosensing platform capable of measuring the activity of factor Xa using peptide substrates conjugated

Enhancing reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene in bioelectrochemical systems with conductive materials.

The incorporation of conductive materials to enhance electron transfer in bioelectrochemical systems (BES) is considered a promising approach. However, the specific effects and mechanisms of these materials on trichloroethylene (TCE) reductive dechlorination in BES remains are not fully understood. This study investigated the use of magnetite nanoparticles (MNP) and biochars (BC) as coatings on biocathodes for TCE reduction. Results demonstrated that the average dechlorination rates of MNP-Biocathode (122.89 μM Cl·d-1) and BC-Biocathode (102.88 μM Cl·d-1) were greatly higher than that of Bioca…

Copper adorned magnetic nanoparticles as a heterogeneous catalyst for Sonogashira coupling reaction in aqueous media.

A nanomagnetic hydrophilic heterogeneous copper catalyst, termed γ-Fe2O3@PEG@PAMAM G0-Cu, has been successfully prepared and characterized using FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, mapping, TGA/DTG, VSM and ICP analyses. The catalyst displayed excellent activity for the palladium-free Sonogashira cross coupling reaction of various aryl iodides and bromides with phenylacetylene derivatives in pure water. The presence of polyethylene glycol coupled with hydrophilic character of the Cu-catalyst adorned on γ-Fe2O3 MNPs provides the ready dispersion of the catalyst particles in water, leading to higher c

Microdevice immunoassay with conjugated magnetic nanoparticles for rapid anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) detection.

Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide IgG antibodies (anti-CCP) are produced as an immune response in the presence of post-translational modified peptides known as cyclic citrullinated peptides (CCP). Anti-CCP have been considered as specific biomarkers for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and due to their high specificity, it is possible to make a differential diagnosis of other rheumatic diseases. These autoantibodies can be detected in the early stages of RA and even up to 10 years before presenting the first symptoms of the disease opening a window of opportunity for timely treatmen

Simple and rapid colorimetric detection of melanoma circulating tumor cells using bifunctional magnetic nanoparticles.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are a promising biomarker for monitoring cancer metastasis and therapy response. However, the rarity and inherent fragility of CTCs pose great challenges for CTC detection. Currently, CTC detection requires advanced instruments that might be inaccessible in most hospitals or labs. To allow simple and rapid CTC detection, we propose a sensor platform that relies only on the intrinsic properties of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) including rapid separation as well as nanozyme activity. The detection of melanoma CTC, which causes most skin cancer-related deaths, is de

Worm-Like Superparamagnetic Nanoparticle Clusters for Enhanced Adhesion and Magnetic Resonance Relaxivity.

Nanosized bioprobes that can highlight diseased tissue can be powerful diagnostic tools. However, a major unmet need is a tool with adequate adhesive properties and contrast-to-dose ratio. To this end, this study demonstrates that targeted superparamagnetic nanoprobes engineered to present a worm-like shape and hydrophilic packaging enhance both adhesion efficiency to target substrates and magnetic resonance (MR) sensitivity. These nanoprobes were prepared by the controlled self-assembly of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) into worm-like superstructures using glycogen-like a

Superparamagnetic nanoparticle delivery of DNA vaccine.

The efficiency of delivery of DNA vaccines is often relatively low compared to protein vaccines. The use of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) to deliver genes via magnetofection shows promise in improving the efficiency of gene delivery both in vitro and in vivo. In particular, the duration for gene transfection especially for in vitro application can be significantly reduced by magnetofection compared to the time required to achieve high gene transfection with standard protocols. SPIONs that have been rendered stable in physiological conditions can be used as both therapeuti

Fast detection of liver fibrosis with collagen-binding single-nanometer iron oxide nanoparticles via T1-weighted MRI.

SNIO-CBP, a single-nanometer iron oxide (SNIO) nanoparticle functionalized with a type I collagen-binding peptide (CBP), was developed as a T1-weighted MRI contrast agent with only endogenous elements for fast and noninvasive detection of liver fibrosis. SNIO-CBP exhibits 6.7-fold higher relaxivity compared to a molecular gadolinium-based collagen-binding contrast agent CM-101 on a per CBP basis at 4.7 T. Unlike most iron oxide nanoparticles, SNIO-CBP exhibits fast elimination from the bloodstream with a 5.7 min half-life, high renal clearance, and low, transient liver enhancement in healthy m

Microvolumetric determination of thrombomodulin based on competitive immunoreaction using a portable glucometer.

A new method of reducing the amount of reagent and sample for determination of thrombomodulin (TM) was developed based on competitive immunoreaction using a portable glucometer (PGM). Two types of nanocomposites, TM protein-modified magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs-TM) and TM antibody-/glucose oxidase-modified gold nanoparticles (Ab-GNPs-GOx), were prepared. Their binding product, MNPs-TM-Ab-GNPs-GOx, in the microvolumetric solution was used to catalyze the oxidation of glucose, leading to a decline of the glucose content. The TM-involved competitive immunoreaction had a negative effect on the gen

Agglomerated serum albumin adsorbed protocatechuic acid coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as a theranostic agent.

Iron oxide nanoparticles have been one of the most widely used nanomaterials in biomedical applications. However, the incomplete understanding of the toxicity mechanisms limits their use in diagnosis and treatment processes. Many parameters are associated with their toxicity such as size, surface modification, solubility, concentration and immunogenicity. Further research needs to be done to address toxicity-related concerns and to increase its effectiveness in various applications. Herein, colloidally stable nanoparticles were prepared by coating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONPs) wit

Single-cell nanotoxicity assays of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles.

Properly evaluating the nanotoxicity of nanoparticles involves much more than bulk-cell assays of cell death by necrosis. Cells exposed to nanoparticles may undergo repairable oxidative stress and DNA damage or be induced into apoptosis. Exposure to nanoparticles may cause the cells to alter their proliferation or differentiation or their cell-cell signaling with neighboring cells in a tissue. Nanoparticles are usually more toxic to some cell subpopulations than others, and toxicity often varies with cell cycle. All of these facts dictate that any nanotoxicity assay must be at the single-cell

Magnetic fluid hyperthermia for different breast categories: Effect of nanoparticle distribution patterns and temperature-dependent perfusion models on thermal transport.

Magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) offers a targeted means of thermally degrading malignant tissue by impregnating superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPMNPs) within a tumor and exciting them with an alternating magnetic field. Although numerical modeling has been attempted before to guide MFH treatment optimization, systematic studies jointly integrating specific tissue categories, clinically realistic nanoparticle distributions, and dynamic perfusion evolution remain absent from the literature, leaving a critical gap in personalized MFH treatment planning. To address this, we develop a finite-el
