Modulation in alpha band activity reflects syntax composition: an MEG study of minimal syntactic binding.

Successful sentence comprehension requires the binding, or composition, of multiple words into larger structures to establish meaning. Using magnetoencephalography, we investigated the neural mechanisms involved in binding at the syntax level, in a task where contributions from semantics were minimized. Participants were auditorily presented with minimal sentences that required binding (pronoun and pseudo-verb with the corresponding morphological inflection; "she grushes") and pseudo-verb wordlists that did not require binding ("cugged grushes"). Relative to no binding, we found that syntactic…

Magnetoencephalographic spikes with small spikes on simultaneous electroencephalography have high spatial clustering in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To classify magnetoencephalographic (MEG) spikes according to the findings of simultaneous scalp electroencephalography (EEG) to study dipole estimation in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. METHODS: We analyzed MEG and simultaneous scalp EEG in 27 patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. We classified MEG spikes into three groups (H-EM-spikes, L-EM-spikes, M-spikes) based on the amplitude of simultaneous EEG (50 μV or higher, lower than 50 μV, no spike morphology on EEG, respectively). We calculated parameters of the dipoles, such as goodness of fit (GOF), current mome

Resting-state oscillations reveal disturbed excitation-inhibition ratio in Alzheimer's disease patients.

An early disruption of neuronal excitation-inhibition (E-I) balance in preclinical animal models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been frequently reported, but is difficult to measure directly and non-invasively in humans. Here, we examined known and novel neurophysiological measures sensitive to E-I in patients across the AD continuum. Resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) data of 86 amyloid-biomarker-confirmed subjects across the AD continuum (17 patients diagnosed with subjective cognitive decline, 18 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 51 with dementia due to probable AD (AD demen…

Altered beta band spatial-temporal interactions during negative emotional processing in major depressive disorder: An MEG study.

BACKGROUND: The mood-concordance bias is a key feature of major depressive disorder (MDD), but the spatiotemporal neural activity associated with emotional processing in MDD remains unclear. Understanding the dysregulated connectivity patterns during emotional processing and their relationship with clinical symptoms could provide insights into MDD neuropathology. METHODS: We enrolled 108 MDD patients and 64 healthy controls (HCs) who performed an emotion recognition task during magnetoencephalography recording. Network-based statistics (NBS) was used to analyze whole-brain functional connecti…

Neural Coding of Visual Objects Rapidly Reconfigures to Reflect Subtrial Shifts in Attentional Focus.

Every day, we respond to the dynamic world around us by choosing actions to meet our goals. Flexible neural populations are thought to suppo … onfigure more quickly than we can observe with fMRI. Here, we used multivariate pattern analysis of magnetoencephalography data to test for rapid reconfiguration of stimulus information when a new feature becomes relevant within a trial. Participants saw two displays on each trial. They attended to the shape of a first target then the color of a second, or vice versa, a …

State-dependent tDCS modulation of the somatomotor network: A MEG study.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique widely used to investigate brain excitability and activity. However, the variability in both brain and behavioral responses to tDCS limits its application for clinical purposes. This study aims to shed light on state-dependency, a phenomenon that contributes to the variability of tDCS. METHODS: To this aim, we investigated changes in spectral activity and functional connectivity in somatomotor regions after Real and Sham tDCS using generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs), which allowed us to investigate ho

Maturation of hemispheric specialization for face encoding during infancy and toddlerhood.

Little is known about the neural processes associated with attending to social stimuli during infancy and toddlerhood. Using infant magnetoencephalography (MEG), fusiform gyrus (FFG) activity while processing Face and Non-Face stimuli was examined in 46 typically developing infants 3 to 24 months old (28 males). Several findings indicated FFG maturation throughout the first two years of life. First, right FFG responses to Face stimuli decreased as a function of age. Second, hemispheric specialization to the face stimuli developed somewhat slowly, with earlier right than left FFG peak activity …

Phasic modulation of visual representations during sustained attention.

Sustained attention has long been thought to benefit perception in a continuous fashion, but recent evidence suggests that it affects perception in a discrete, rhythmic way. Periodic fluctuations in behavioral performance over time, and modulations of behavioral performance by the phase of spontaneous oscillatory brain activity point to an attentional sampling rate in the theta or alpha frequency range. We investigated whether such discrete sampling by attention is reflected in periodic fluctuations in the decodability of visual stimulus orientation from magnetoencephalographic (MEG) brain sig

Neurology of musical performance.

Performing music at a professional level requires the integration of multimodal sensory and motor information and precise monitoring of the performance via auditory feedback. In the context of Western classical music, musicians are forced to reproduce highly controlled movements almost perfectly with a high reliability. These specialised sensorimotor skills are acquired during extensive training periods over many years. The superior skills of musicians are mirrored in functional and structural plastic adaptations of sensorimotor and auditory systems of the brain. Auditory-sensorimotor integrat

Vagus nerve stimulation for epilepsy: A narrative review of factors predictive of response.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an established therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy. However, there is a lack of reliable predictors of VNS response in clinical use. The identification of factors predictive of VNS response is important for patient selection and stratification as well as tailored stimulation programming. We conducted a narrative review of the existing literature on prognostic markers for VNS response using clinical, demographic, biochemical, and modality-specific information such as from electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).…

Oxytocin attenuates feelings of hostility depending on emotional context and individuals' characteristics.

In humans, oxytocin (OT) enhances prosocial behaviour. However, it is still unclear how the prosocial effects of OT are modulated by emotional features and/or individuals' characteristics. In a placebo-controlled design, we tested 20 healthy male volunteers to investigate these behavioural and neurophysiological modulations using magnetoencephalography. As an index of the individuals' characteristics, we used the empathy quotient (EQ), the autism spectrum quotient (AQ), and the systemising quotient (SQ). Only during the perception of another person's angry face was a higher SQ a significant pr…

Neural representation of language: activation versus long-range connectivity.

Cognitive functions are thought to build on connectivity within large-scale neuronal networks, rather than on strictly localized processes. … localization and characterization of functionally connected neural networks directly from real-time magnetoencephalography data. The time scales of irreversibility in spontaneous brain activity are altered in obsessive compulsive disorder.

We study how obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects the complexity and time-reversal symmetry-breaking (irreversibility) of the brain resting-state activity as measured by magnetoencephalography (MEG). Comparing MEG recordings from OCD patients and age/sex matched control subjects, we find that irreversibility is more concentrated at faster time scales and more uniformly distributed across different channels of the same hemisphere in OCD patients than in control subjects. Furthermore, the interhemispheric asymmetry between homologous areas of OCD patients and controls is also markedly dif…

Akinetopsia as epileptic seizure.

Akinetopsia is a rare syndrome in which a patient specifically loses the ability to perceive visual motion following bilateral cortical lesi … sembling freeze frames in a motion picture. This symptom was paroxysmal and recurrent. Both EEG and magnetoencephalography showed repetitive right temporal spikes. We diagnosed his visual symptom as akinetopsia, which was aroused by hyperexcitability of the right temporal and parietal cortices, including area MT/V5. We administered carbamazepine 200 mg/day, which suppre …

Surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy originating from the primary sensory area of the hand--case report.

A 14-year-old right-handed girl presented with intractable epilepsy originating from the primary sensory area of the hand, manifesting as sensory partial seizures in the left hand with secondary generalization. Neurological examination showed no abnormal findings. Magnetic resonance imaging, magnetoencephalography, and cortical stimulation using chronic subdural electrodes demonstrated a lesion located in the primary sensory cortex of the hand, in which the ictal onset zone was identified by 24-hour intracranial electroencephalographic recording. Surgical resection of the lesion and multiple s…

Bias-correction subspace projection method for background noise suppression in OPM-MEG systems.

The Magnetoencephalography (MEG) based on optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) has emerged as a transformative wearable neuroimaging modality, offering significant advantages such as flexible sensor placement and closer proximity to neural sources. However, these very characteristics impose more stringent requirements on the environmental noise suppression. Among spatial filtering approaches, signal space projection (SSP) estimates the noise subspace directly from empty-room recordings and can be implemented without dense spatial sampling, detailed sensor-geometry modeling, or subject-specifi…
