[Molecular epidemiology of meningococcal meningitis in Mali: isolation of a new class 1 protein variant (P1.y)].

The study deals with 570 strains of Neisseriaceae isolated between 1989 and 1994 in Mali: 396 of the strains were isolated from samples of cerebrospinal fluid and 174 from the throat. Serogroup C accounted for 55% of all strains. Antigenic structure was determined by ELISA, SDS-PAGE and transfer to nitrocellulose membrane for immunoblotting with monoclonal antibodies produced at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics. For serogroup A, the class 1 protein types found were P1.7 for strains isolated prior to 1994 and P1.9 for strains isolated in 1994. P1.7 is specific to clone IV-1 and P…

Epidemiological and clinical profile of ischemic, hemorrhagic, and mixed strokes in Sikasso, Mali: a prospective cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: in sub-Saharan Africa, stroke places a substantial burden on health systems and populations. Clinical and epidemiological features vary by subtype, ischemic, hemorrhagic, and mixed, but data specific to Mali are limited. This study characterises, in Sikasso, the profiles linked to each stroke type. METHODS: from November 2021 to October 2022, a prospective cross-sectional study included 135 CT-confirmed stroke admissions. Socio-demographic, clinical, and biological information was collected at presentation. We used descriptive and bivariate statistics and performed multiple corr…

Quantifying the impact of health service delivery barriers on access to healthcare: a case study of antiretroviral therapy in Mali.

Achieving universal health coverage is a key component of the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on equitable access to quality health services and minimising financial hardship. While strategies often target the demand-side, supply-side barriers such as travel time and facility-level constraints are often overlooked. Accurately quantifying who is affected by these barriers and identifying their locations and specific barriers is critical to improving service delivery. This study examines these barriers in Mali, a country with significant health system challenges exacerbated by high ferti…

Occurrence of antibiotics in hospital wastewater effluents discharged into the Niger River in Bamako, Mali. Risk assessment and solutions.

Hospital wastewater effluents are a significant source of antibiotics (ABs) contamination in aquatic environments, contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study examines 30 pharmaceutical compounds, including 22 ABs, in wastewater effluents from four hospitals in Bamako, Mali, at exit points (Po) and discharge sites (Pf) into the Niger River. The ABs belong to nine classes, mainly fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and sulfonamides. While half of the ABs were undetected, concentrations of detected ABs ranged from 0.1 to nearly 40 μg/L. Acetyl-sulfamethoxazole (ASMX) and ciprofloxacin (…

Genetic insights of H9N2 avian influenza viruses circulating in Mali and phylogeographic patterns in Northern and Western Africa.

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) of the H9N2 subtype have become widespread in Western Africa since their first detection in 2017 in Burkina Faso. However, the genetic characteristics and diffusion patterns of the H9N2 virus remain poorly understood in Western Africa, mainly due to limited surveillance activities. In addition, Mali, a country considered to play an important role in the epidemiology of AIVs in the region, lacks more comprehensive data on the genetic characteristics of these viruses, especially the H9N2 subtype. To better understand the genetic characteristics and spatio-temporal …

Raoultella planticola and urinary tract infection: The first laboratory-confirmed case in an HIV-infected patient in Mali.

Raoultella planticola is a Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile bacterium, abundant in the environment, but rarely associated with pathology in humans. Notably, few urinary tract infections caused by R. planticola have been reported. To our knowledge, we are presenting here the first case of urinary tract infection caused by R. planticola in an HIV-infected individual. It is a 50-year-old female, with a history of HIV-1 infection treated for three years. At admission, her CD4 count was 70 cells/mL, and the main complaints were severe diarrhea and cough. She was diagnosed and treated for pulmonar

Effect of 4 years of seasonal malaria chemoprevention on the acquisition of antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum antigens in Ouelessebougou, Mali.

BACKGROUND: More than 200 million people live in areas of highly seasonal malaria transmission where Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and amodiaquine (AQ) was recommended in 2012 by WHO. This strategy is now implemented widely and protected more than 19 million children in 2018. It was previously reported that exposure to SMC reduced antibody levels to AMA1, MSP-142 and CSP, but the duration of exposure to SMC up to three 3 years, had no effect on antibody levels to MSP-142 and CSP. METHODS: In 2017, a cross-sectional survey was carried out 1 month af

Using community health workers as an alternative approach for epidemiological research on epilepsy in six health districts in Mali.

BACKGROUND: In Mali, the burden of epilepsy is underestimated due to socio-cultural barriers that keep most people with epilepsy out of the local health facilities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of trained community health workers (CHWs) in identifying epilepsy cases (active case detection) as compared to the passive cases detection (PCD) during outpatient visits at the community health centers in the health districts (HDs) of Kolokani, Kayes, Kéniéba, Sikasso, Kadiolo, and Tominian. METHODS: A two-phase cross-sectional study was conducted from February to Decemb…

The Depiction of Smallpox and Other Dermatologic Lesions on the Surfaces of Ancient Terracotta Statues from Mali, West Africa.

Between 1100 A.D. and 1700 A.D., terracotta statues were created in the Interior Delta of the Niger River in what is now the Republic of Mali. They are known as Djenné-Jeno terracottas because of their geographic proximity to an ancient town of that name. Some of these statues possess surface excrescences that have long perplexed archaeologists, art historians, curators, and others. This study of these surface excrescences employed clinical, diagnostic, and epidemiological methodologies to elucidate their possible meanings. It has not been possible to ascribe these excrescences to a single cau…

Evolution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex lineages and their role in an emerging threat of multidrug resistant tuberculosis in Bamako, Mali.

In recent years Bamako has been faced with an emerging threat from multidrug resistant TB (MDR-TB). Whole genome sequence analysis was performed on a subset of 76 isolates from a total of 208 isolates recovered from tuberculosis patients in Bamako, Mali between 2006 and 2012. Among the 76 patients, 61(80.3%) new cases and 15(19.7%) retreatment cases, 12 (16%) were infected by MDR-TB. The dominant lineage was the Euro-American lineage, Lineage 4. Within Lineage 4, the Cameroon genotype was the most prevalent genotype (n = 20, 26%), followed by the Ghana genotype (n = 16, 21%). A sub-clade of th…

Two members of the velvet family, VmVeA and VmVelB, affect conidiation, virulence and pectinase expression in Valsa mali.

Velvet protein family members are important fungal-specific regulators which are involved in conidial development, secondary metabolism and virulence. To gain a broader insight into the physiological functions of the velvet protein family of Valsa mali, which causes a highly destructive canker disease on apple, we conducted a functional analysis of two velvet protein family members (VmVeA and VmVelB) via a gene replacement strategy. Deletion mutants of VmVeA and VmVelB showed increased melanin production, conidiation and sensitivity to abiotic stresses, but exhibited reduced virulence on detac…

Performance of microscopic observation drug susceptibility for the rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis and detection of drug resistance in Bamako, Mali.

OBJECTIVES: In Mali early detection and treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) are still challenging due to the cost, time and/or complexity associated with regular tests. Microscopic Observation Drug Susceptibility (MODS) is a low-cost assay validated by WHO in 2010. It is a liquid-culture-based assay to detect the 'cording' characteristic of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and to assess susceptibility to both isoniazid and rifampicin defining multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). In this study we aimed to evaluate the performance of MODS as diagnostic tool compared wi…

First Report of 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali,' the Causal Agent of Apple Proliferation Disease, in Apple Trees in Finland.

Based on an earlier survey of putative psyllid vectors of apple proliferation (AP), carried out in 2009 and 2010, Cacopsylla picta (Förster) populations infected with 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali' were detected in at least two commercial apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) orchards in southern Finland (1). To establish the presence of 'Ca. P. mali' in apple trees, a survey was conducted in 17 commercial apple orchards in August 2012. Phytosanitary inspectors tracked the source of the 'Ca. P. mali' by collecting 33 leaf samples from trees showing probable symptoms. Typical symptoms, including elonga…
