Ossifying fibroma: the peripheral variant.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a solitary gingival growth thought to arise from the gingiva, periosteum or the periodontal ligament. It is a slow-growing, benign, progressive lesion that is limited in size. CASE DESCRIPTION: This article describes a case of ossifying fibroma of a peripheral variant that occurred in a 26-year-old female in the anterior region of the lower jaw and presented as a growth on the gingiva. Since it was difficult to diagnose clinically, a pathological evaluation was mandatory. Upon pathological confirmation of the diagnosis, the lesion was surgic

Clinicoradiologic features of ameloblastomas: A single-centre study of 155 cases.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the current study was to report on the clinical presentation and radiologic features of 155 cases of ameloblastoma (AB), representing a detailed, large, single-centre radiologic study. METHODS: Histologically confirmed cases were reviewed over 11 years. Demographic and clinical data were retrieved from the patient's records. Radiologic information was analysed from available radiographs. The radiologic features of ABs were assessed according to the mean age of presentation and the mean duration of the lesion. The distinguishing radiologic features between adults/chi

Atypical presentation of oral Burkitt lymphoma in an adult: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Burkitt lymphoma is an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin B cell lymphoma. Oral lesions often are a component of the disseminated disease process that may involve regional lymph nodes or may at times represent the primary extranodal form of the disease. However, isolated oral Burkitt lymphoma in adults is extremely rare. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 26-years-old Caucasian Moroccan woman with oral Burkitt lymphoma without any other general symptoms. It presented as swelling of the left mandibular and maxillary soft tissue progressing for 1 month. The unilateral location in bo

Nerve Sharing Between the Lingual and Mental Nerve to Restore Lower Lip Sensation After Segmental Resection of the Mandible.

This report demonstrates a successful new procedure for reconstructing the inferior alveolar nerve by transplanting the great auricular nerve (GAN) between the mental nerve and the remaining submandibular ganglion to achieve nerve sharing of the lingual nerve. A 59-year-old woman with discomfort in the left mandibular retromolar region and ipsilateral neck was referred to our hospital by a local dentist. Physical examination showed mild swelling and redness at the left mandibular retromolar region. The histologic diagnosis showed central mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the jaw. With the patient un

Bilateral coronoid hyperplasia (Jacob disease on right and elongation on left): report of a case and literature review.

A case is reported of bilateral coronoid hyperplasia. The literature is reviewed concerning this condition's etiology, pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment. Jacob disease and coronoid elongation are both clinical features of coronoid hyperplasia. It is usually accompanied by restricted opening. The etiology and pathogenesis of coronoid hyperplasia are unclear. The condition can be diagnosed by panoramic radiographs and with 3-dimensional reconstructions from computerized tomography image data sets. Hyperplasia of the coronoid processes can be treated using an intrao

Metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma to the mandibular condyle: a rare clinical presentation.

Metastatic disease to the oral cavity is rare, representing only 1-8% of oral malignancies, and involvement of the mandibular condyle is even less prevalent. In a recent literature review of 796 cases of metastatic disease to the oral cavity, only 39 (13.8%) involved the condyle. This report is a unique case of metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma to the condyle. There are only 5 documented cases of metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma to the oral cavity, one of which metastasized to the condyle. This is an important case because metastatic lesions to the condyle may mimic temporomandibular jo

[Mental neuropathy and pathologic fracture of the mandible as initial symptoms of metastatic prostate carcinoma].

BACKGROUND: Distant metastases of solid tumors account for about 1% of all malign neoplasms. In about 30% of all patients who present with an oral metastasis, the distant primary tumour has not been diagnosed yet. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 71-year-old man who clinically demonstrated unilateral mental neuropathy as well as pathologic fracture of the mandible. Prostate carcinoma was identified as a primary tumor. Clinically, there was significant hypesthesia of the skin area innervated by the left inferior alveolar nerve. X-ray examination revealed an osteolytic lesion of the ascendi

Symptomatic Mandibular Fibrous Dysplasia With Concurrent Triple X- and Premutation Stage Fragile-X-Syndrome: Case Report With Short Literature Survey.

BACKGROUND: Certain constitutive chromosomal abnormalities of the human X chromosome are relatively common in conspicuous neuropsychiatric findings. Although tumors or tumor-like lesions are occasionally reported in diseases of the X chromosome, they are numerically negligible, for example, in aneuploidy such as the triple X syndrome (TXS). CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old female patient with a known TXS and premutation stage of fragile X syndrome was referred by her dentist for diagnosis and treatment of unilateral cheek swelling. The examination of the psychologically conspicuous patient revealed

Mandibular reconstruction using iliac bone and great auricular nerve grafts and oral rehabilitation using osseointegrated implants in a patient with a large ossifying fibroma: a 10-year follow-up study.

Ossifying fibromas are bone-related benign neoplasms that are characterized by well-demarcated lesions composed of fibrocellular tissue and mineralized material with varying appearances. Although small lesions are asymptomatic, they may cause enlargement of the affected jaw and rarely require reconstructive or restorative treatments for aesthetic and functional problems. In this study, we report a 35-year-old woman who underwent multidisciplinary treatment for a large ossifying fibroma of the mandible. A segmental mandibular resection was performed, and immediate reconstruction was performed u

Surgical management of submandibulary gland diseases: ten years of experience.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical management of submandibular gland diseases has always been a challenge because it carries a considerable risk of nerve injury. The aim of the study was to evaluate the history, diagnostic procedure, extent and success of the surgical treatment as well as possible complications in patients with submandibulary gland disorder. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective analysis of 86 patients (42 males, 44 females) with submandibular gland disorder treated between 1999 and 2008 at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, FD Roosevelt Faculty Hospital in Banska Bystrica, Slovak

Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma of the Mandible, a Big Dilemma: Report of a Rare Case in Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma of the Mandible-Report of a Case With Discussion of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Dilemmas.

Chondrosarcomas are a group of malignant neoplasms with cartilaginous matrix production mostly found in flat and peripheral long bones. Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is one of the most unusual and rare histological variants of chondrosarcoma, with a distinct histopathological appearance and biologically aggressive behavior. The amount of cartilage in mesenchymal chondrosarcoma may be so abundant that it is easily found in random sections or so scarce that numerous sections are required to discover it. In such cases, it is tough to make an accurate diagnosis, which leads to a big dilemma for patho

Intractable Facial Pain and Numb Chin due to Metastatic Esophageal Adenocarcinoma.

The etiologies of facial pain are innumerable, thus facial pain misdiagnosis and resultant mismanagement is common. Numb chin syndrome presents with hypoesthesia and/or anesthesia in the dermatomal distribution of the inferior alveolar or the mental nerve. In this case report, we will discuss a case of intractable facial pain in a 57-year-old male with a history of esophageal adenocarcinoma who was initially misdiagnosed and treated as trigeminal neuralgia. During clinical examination, the loss of sensation in the inferior alveolar nerve distribution was identified and led to the diagnosis of

Molecularly Variant Synovial Sarcoma of the Lower Lip: MN1::SSX1 Fusion as a Diagnostic Pitfall in the Head and Neck.

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm typically characterized by SS18::SSX gene fusions. Although most commonly arising in the extremities, it rarely occurs in the head and neck region. We report a case of monophasic synovial sarcoma of the lower lip harboring a rare MN1::SSX1 fusion that presented a diagnostic challenge due to negative standard molecular testing. A 23-year-old woman presented with a slowly enlarging right lower lip mass. Imaging revealed a well-defined subcutaneous lesion without mandibular invasion and mildly prominent bilateral cervical lymph nodes. Core biop

Odontogenic carcinosarcoma of the mandible: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Odontogenic carcinosarcoma, a rare and challenging diagnosis, was identified in a 60-year-old male through histopathology, revealing a biphasic neoplasm with malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Surgical resection is crucial for management, highlighting the importance of vigilant postoperative follow-up to ensure early detection of any recurrence. ABSTRACT: One rare mixed malignant odontogenic tumor is odontogenic carcinosarcoma, which comprises malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Diagnosing odontogenic carcinosarcoma is challenging due to its ra

Dentinogenic ghost cell tumor: Two case reports and review of the literature.

Dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) is a rare odontogenic neoplasm, representing a solid variant of the calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), accounting for 2%-14% of all COCs and <0.5% of odontogenic tumors. Its unique histological and clinical characteristics, coupled with its potential for local invasiveness, underscore the necessity for accurate diagnosis and management. This article reports two cases of DGCT Case 1involves a 13-year-old boy presented with the absence of permanent teeth 4 and 5. Radiographic examinations revealed a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion in the left mandible ass
