Monomeric MnIII/II and FeIII/II complexes with terminal hydroxo and oxo ligands: probing reactivity via O-H bond dissociation energies.

Non-heme manganese and iron complexes with terminal hydroxo or oxo ligands are proposed to mediate the transfer of hydrogen atoms in metalloproteins. To investigate this process in synthetic systems, the monomeric complexes [M(III/II)H(3)1(OH)](-/2-) and [M(III)H(3)1(O)](2-) have been prepared, where M(III/II) = Mn and Fe and [H(3)1](3-) is the tripodal ligand, tris[(N'-tert-butylureaylato)-N-ethyl)]aminato. These complexes have similar primary and secondary coordination spheres, which are enforced by [H(3)1](3-). The homolytic bond dissociation energies (BDEs(O-H)) for the M(III/II)-OH comple

A biofilm reactor packed with aspen wood and polyurethane sponge for biological manganese(II) oxidation and minor metal recovery.

Biogenic manganese oxides (MnOx) are promising agents for the removal and recovery of minor metals from water. However, cultivating heterotrophic Mn(II)-oxidizing microorganisms in non-sterile bioreactors remains difficult, and few continuous-flow reactor designs have been evaluated for their ability to recover minor metals under such conditions. In this study, we operated a laboratory-scale biofilm reactor packed with aspen wood and a polyurethane sponge for 469 d to evaluate its feasibility for biogenic MnOx production. Aspen wood served as a solid-phase organic substrate, the biodegradation

Construction of a stable manganese/copper core-shell laccase-like enzyme for recyclable dye decolorization and phenolic pollutant detection.

Laccase shows significant potential for environmental remediation, yet its practical implementation is limited by inherent instability and restricted reusability. To address these limitations, we successfully synthesized a Mn/Cu-based core-shell structured laccase-like enzyme (SiO2@APTCu-MnO2) using a sol-gel method coupled with an in situ sacrificial strategy. Compared to natural laccase, SiO2@APTCu-MnO2 exhibited enhanced substrate affinity (Michaelis constant, Km = 0.29 mM) and a higher catalytic rate (Vmax = 1.05 ×10⁻³ mM/min). It maintained exceptional stability across wide pH and tempera

Effect of Cu(II) and Conserved Copper Binding Sites on the Multicopper Oxidase CopA and Characterization of BioMnO x.

The microbial manganese removal process is believed to consist of the catalytic oxidation of Mn(II) by manganese oxidase. In this study, the multicopper oxidase CopA was purified and exhibited high manganese oxidation activity in vitro, and it was found that Cu(II) can significantly enhance its manganese oxidation activity. Gene site-directed mutagenesis was used to mutate four conserved copper binding sites of CopA to obtain four mutant strains. The manganese removal efficiencies of the four strains were determined, and it was found that H120 is the catalytically active site of CopA. The loss

Performance of simultaneous nitrification-denitrification and denitrifying phosphorus and manganese removal by driving a single-stage moving bed biofilm reactor based on manganese redox cycling.

Simultaneous removal of NH4+-N, NO3--N, COD, and P by manganese redox cycling in nutrient wastewater was established with a single-stage moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) under low C/N ratio. When sodium succinate replaced the conventional denitrifying carbon source, removal efficiencies of TN, NO3--N, NH4+-N, TP, and Mn2+ were 65.13 %, 79.63 %, 92.79 %, 51.57 %, and 68.10 %, respectively. Based on modified Stover-Kincannon model, 11.03 and 10.05 mg TN·L-1·h-1 of Umax values were obtained with sodium acetate and sodium succinate as substrates. Extracellular polymeric substances were used to ev

High resolution spatiotemporal sampling as a tool for comprehensive assessment of zinc mobility and pollution in sediments of a eutrophic lake.

To assess zinc (Zn) pollution risk from sediments, this study investigated the monthly changes of dissolved Zn and labile Zn in sediment-overlying water profiles in a eutrophic bay (Meiliang Bay) of Lake Taihu (China) using high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) at a 4 mm vertical resolution. In February and March, Mn oxides reduction caused high concentrations of DGT-labile Zn (14 ∼ 235 μg L-1), as evidenced by the significant correlation between DGT-labile Zn and DGT-labile Mn in sediments. In June and July, algal blooms reduced concentrations of dis

Impact of manganese on and transfer across blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier in vitro.

Manganese occupational and dietary overexposure has been shown to result in specific clinical central nervous system syndromes, which are similar to those observed in Parkinson disease. To date, modes of neurotoxic action of Mn are still to be elucidated but are thought to be strongly related to Mn accumulation in brain and oxidative stress. However, the pathway and the exact process of Mn uptake in the brain are yet not fully understood. Here, two well characterized primary porcine in vitro models of the blood-brain and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier were applied to assess the tr

Epigenetic Regulation of Manganese-Induced Hepatotoxicity Uncovering Histone Demethylation-Associated Gene Networks.

Excessive manganese (Mn) exposure can result in significant liver toxicity in humans and animals. Histone demethylation, a crucial epigenetic modification, is believed to play a pivotal role in liver disease progression. However, the involvement of histone demethylation-associated genes in Mn-induced hepatotoxicity remains poorly understood. This study aimed to identify these genes related to Mn exposure. We analyzed gene expression data, which included liver samples treated with manganese chloride (MnCl2) and control samples. Our analysis revealed 351 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) on

Transformation of Iminodi(methylene phosphonate) on Manganese Dioxides - Passivation of the Mineral Surface by (Formed) Mn2.

Aminopolyphosphonates (APPs) are strong chelating agents with growing use in industrial and household applications. In this study, we investigated the oxidation of the bisphosphonate iminodi(methylene phosphonate) (IDMP) - a major transformation product (TP) of numerous commercially used APPs and a potential precursor for aminomethylphosphonate (AMPA) - on manganese dioxide (MnO2). Transformation batch experiments at pH 6 revealed AMPA and phosphate as main TPs, with a phosphorus mass balance of 80 to 92% throughout all experiments. Our results suggest initial cleavage of the C-P bond and form

Adsorption of hexavalent chromium from water using manganese-aluminum coated sand: Kinetics, equilibrium, effect of pH and ionic strength.

Removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from water was evaluated using a low-cost coated sand adsorbent for potential application in a flow-through filter system using permeable adsorption media. Manganese-aluminum coated sand (MACS) was investigated as a hybrid metal oxide based adsorbent due to the potential efficacy of manganese oxide and aluminum oxide for adsorption of Cr(VI) from water. Adsorbent characterization was performed using XRD, SEM/EDX, XPS and BET. Adsorption experiments were performed to determine adsorption capacity and kinetics. The effect of pH, common co-existing ions fou

Electron Transfer on the Donor Side of Manganese-Depleted Photosystem 2.

After removal of manganese ions responsible for light-driven water oxidation, redox-active tyrosine YZ (tyrosine 161 of the D1 subunit) still remains the dominant electron donor to the photooxidized chlorophyll P680 (P680+) in the reaction center of photosystem 2 (PS2). Here, we investigated P680+ reduction by YZ under single-turnover flashes in Mn-depleted PS2 core complexes in the presence of weak acids and NH4Cl. Analysis of changes in the light-induced absorption at 830 nm (reflecting P680 redox transitions) at pH 6.0 showed that P680+ reduction is well approximated by two kinetic componen

Maternal Exposure to Cadmium and Manganese Impairs Reproduction and Progeny Fitness in the Sea Urchin Paracentrotus lividus.

Metal contamination represents one of the major sources of pollution in marine environments. In this study we investigated the short-term effects of ecologically relevant cadmium and manganese concentrations (10(-6) and 3.6 x 10(-5) M, respectively) on females of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus and their progeny, reared in the absence or presence of the metal. Cadmium is a well-known heavy metal, whereas manganese represents a potential emerging contaminant, resulting from an increased production of manganese-containing compounds. The effects of these agents were examined on both P. livid

Oxidation of nitric oxide by oxomanganese-salen complexes: a new mechanism for cellular protection by superoxide dismutase/catalase mimetics.

Manganese-salen complexes (Mn-Salen), including EUK-8 [manganese N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine chloride] and EUK-134 [manganese 3-methoxy N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine chloride], have been reported to possess combined superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase mimetic functions. Because of this SOD/catalase mimicry, EUK-8 and EUK-134 have been investigated as possible therapeutic agents in neurological disorders resulting from oxidative stress, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke and multiple sclerosis. These actions have been explained by the ability of the

Iron-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling of Thioesters and Organomanganese Reagents.

We report a Fukuyama-type coupling of thioesters with aliphatic organomanganese reagents utilizing a cheap and easily available iron(III) precatalyst. The reactions exhibit a wide tolerance of solvents and functional groups, allowing for the conversion of thioesters derived from natural products and pharmaceutical compounds. A strong steric impact from each reaction component (carboxylic moiety, thiol substituent and manganese reagent) was displayed, which enabled regioselective transformation of dithioesters. Mechanistic investigations showed that the released thiolate does not act as a mere

[Methodology and evaluation of exposure to fumes formed during welding of chromium-nickel steel].

Using various methods for determination of welding fumes components and taking into account a simultaneous determination of soluble compounds of chromium III and IV, hygienic evaluation in two working places employing different systems of MMA/SS welding, TIG/SS welding and padding was carried out. As it is indicated by the results, proper hygienic evaluation of working conditions is possible owing to the measurements of individual exposure of workers in the breathing zone, allowing for determination of chromium manganese, nickel, and, while applying low-hydrogen electrodes, also fluorides, in

Dinuclear cadmium(II), zinc(II), and manganese(II), trinuclear nickel(II), and pentanuclear copper(II) complexes with novel macrocyclic and acyclic Schiff-base ligands having enantiopure or racemic camphoric diamine components.

Four novel [3 + 3] Schiff-base macrocyclic ligands I-IV condensed from 2,6-diformyl-4-substituted phenols (R = CH(3) or Cl) and enantiopure or racemic camphoric diamines have been synthesized and characterized. Metal-ion complexations of these enantiopure and racemic [3 + 3] macrocyclic ligands with different cadmium(II), zinc(II), manganese(II), nickel(II), and copper(II) salts lead to the cleavage of Schiff-base C horizontal lineN double bonds and subsequent ring contraction of the macrocyclic ligands due to the size effects and the spatial restrictions of the coordination geometry of the ce

Oxygen vacancy-mediated dispersion of MnOx on Co3O4 for enhanced Fenton-type degradation of tetracycline.

Developing efficient and stable heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts is essential for advancing the practical application of wastewater remediation. In this study, a ZIF-67-derived Co3O4 catalyst decorated with highly dispersed MnOx was synthesized for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). Compared to commercial Co3O4, the ZIF-67-derived Co3O4 nanoflakes provide abundant surface oxygen vacancies that serve as anchoring sites to facilitate the high dispersion of MnOx and promote the enrichment of Mn2+species. These Mn2+ sites effectively activate hydrogen peroxide to generate hydroxyl radicals
