OBJECTIVES: To determine which types of bone lesion (spicules, lobules, porous bone) in the maxillary sinus indicate sinusitis METHODS: Subadjacent dental disease is a cause of maxillary sinusitis; if a lesion type indicates sinusitis it should be more common above diseased posterior maxillary teeth than a lesion type that is not indicative of sinusitis. The study sample is a British Mediaeval human skeletal collection.
RESULTS: Porous bone lesions (chiefly new bone deposits) in maxillary sinuses are associated with subadjacent dental disease; spicules/lobules of bone in the sinus are not.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to evaluate the incidence, timing, and factors contributing to recurrent maxillary sinusitis due to middle meatal antrostomy (MMA) site stenosis after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).
METHODS: The medical records and endoscopic photographs of 288 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis who underwent ESS were evaluated. Patients visited the clinic with similar schedule after ESS; recurrent maxillary sinusitis due to MMA site stenosis was investigated, including in terms of the incidence and timing. The preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans, intraoperative …

Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia is a chronic, indolent, lymphoproliferative disorder, which is characterized by the presence of a high macroglobulin (IgM) level, elevated serum viscosity, and the presence of a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate in the bone marrow. Clinical manifestations may be found due to the presence of IgM paraprotein and malignant lymphoplasmacytic cell infiltration of the bone marrow and other tissues. We reported a case of male patient with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia and bilateral maxillary sinusitis. He had received symptomatic and antibiotic treatment for his sinusitis, FF…

INTRODUCTION: Although several anatomical anomalies in the middle turbinate have been reported, they usually remain asymptomatic. However, c … achment of the right middle turbinate to the left posterior nasopharyngeal wall. In addition, right maxillary sinusitis was observed. From these findings, the lesion was suspected to be an abnormal configuration of the right middle turbinate with secondary maxillary sinusitis and was successfully treated by resection of the malformed middle turbinate and middle meata …

Foreign bodies in maxillary sinuses are unusual clinical conditions, and they can cause chronic sinusitis by mucosal irritation. Most cases … uate for visualisation. In this case, we present a 24-year-old male patient with unilateral chronic maxillary sinusitis due to a wooden toothpick in left maxillary sinus. The patient had a history of upper second premolar tooth extraction. CT scan revealed sinus opacification with presence of a foreign body in left maxillary sinus extending from the floor of the sinu …

In a pooled analysis of three large controlled clinical trials involving patients with acute maxillary sinusitis, the bacteriological efficacy of 5- or 10-day treatment with telithromycin and 10-day treatment with comparators was evaluated. Telithromycin administered as a once-daily 800 mg dose for 5 days achieved eradication rates of 91.8, 87.5 and 92.9% for …

A 17-year-old male presented with a 3-month history of cough associated with right-sided purulent rhinorrhoea and right facial pain. Nasal endoscopy confirmed the presence of mucopus from the right middle meatus. Plain sinus X-ray assessment showed the presence of an ectopic molar in the right anterosuperior aspect of the maxillary sinus entrapped in soft tissue. Surgical removal of the tooth and the diseased antral tissue was undertaken via a Caldwell-Luc procedure with resolution of symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of acute exacerbation of chronic bilateral maxillary sinusitis during therapy with nafarelin nasal spray for chronic pelvic pain and suspected adenomyosis uteri in a patient of 34 years.
DESIGN: Case report.
INTERVENTIONS: In the follicular stage of the cycle a diagnostic laparoscopy was carried out because of unexplained pelvic pain for 2 years with biopsy of the pelvic peritoneum and of the uterine fundus was done, revealing no pathology. One and a half years ago the patient already had a diagnostic laparoscopy for the same reason without pathological findings…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It is important to differentiate fungal from nonfungal sinusitis in order to determine the optimal treatment for chronic sinusitis. The purpose of this study was to describe the CT findings of calcifications in chronic fungal and nonfungal maxillary sinusitis.
METHODS: Five hundred ten patients with pathologically proved chronic maxillary sinusitis were studied with unenhanced CT before undergoing sinonasal surgery. In 36 patients, the CT scans were reviewed retrospectively to ascertain the shape and location of intrasinus calcifications.
RESULTS: Calcifications were …

To examine trends in the incidence of chronic maxillary sinusitis that require surgical treatment in northern Finland, a retrospective population-based survey from 1974 through 1995 was conducted. Data on surgical cases and on various demographic factors and on variables describing medical care in the area were collected for every third year. The overall crude incidence rate (per 100,000 person-years) of chronic maxillary sinusitis requiring surgical therapy was 44 for children and 76 for adults. The age-standardized incidence rate dropped by 78% in children, and by 66% in adults during the pe…

BACKGROUND: In general practice, acute sinusitis is frequently diagnosed and treated with antibiotics.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the evidence for the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment in acute maxillary sinusitis in adults by assessing the methodological quality of placebo-controlled double-blind randomized trials.
METHOD: An evaluation by four raters through a 35-item scoring-scale for internal and external validity of all placebo-controlled double-blind randomized trials on acute sinusitis found between January 1966 and July 1996.
RESULTS: Eighty-five trials were exclud…

The aim of this study is to determine the role of nasal smear in evaluating diagnosis and response to the treatment by the patient of acute maxillary sinusitis. We compared nasal smear and histopathological findings obtained from rabbits experimentally induced acute maxillary sinusitis. The animals were divided into two groups; one with blocked ostium and treated with antibiotic and the other applied natural ostiotomy, during a 4-week period. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in respect of recovery period. This conclusion was derived from nasal smear and …

The maxillary sinuses of 133 skeletons from the medieval hospital of St. James and St. Mary Magdalene, Chichester, England, were analyzed for evidence of sinusitis. Of the sample, 16 individuals were considered to have suffered from lepromatous leprosy and 13 from tuberculoid leprosy. The most common bone change seen within the sinuses was the presence of new bone formation followed by pitting. Bone change was seen in 56.3% (9 of 16) of the individuals with lepromatous leprosy and 54.8% (57 of 104) of nonleprous individuals. These results are not statistically significant. Clinical evidence su

To distinguish opacification owing to inflammatory conditions (sinusitis) from that caused by nasomaxillary malignancy, computed tomography scans in 24 proved cases of sinusitis or tumor were reviewed for features related to sinus size, wall thickness, and character of bone erosion. An anatomic system was defined for classifying lesions according to the surface and type of bony involvement. In 12 cases of chronic maxillary sinusitis, the involved sinus was usually small and thick walled. The nasal surface of the involved sinus usually was eroded; often the orbital surface was eroded. The erosi…
