Leveraging a Parenting Intervention to Support Healthy Media Use in U.S. Preschoolers with Externalizing Behavior: A Pilot Randomized Trial.

Research shows that exposure to screen media and externalizing behavior problems in young children are linked. Externalizing behavior problems also present a significant barrier to parents attempting to adhere to screen media use recommendations. However, screen media use interventions have not specifically targeted children with externalizing behavior problems. This randomized pilot study examined the feasibility, acceptability, and initial effectiveness of adapting an evidence-based parenting intervention (the School Readiness Parenting Program) to intervene around screen media use with 31 l

Why Thirteen Reasons Why may elicit suicidal ideation in some viewers, but help others.

When the popular Netflix series 13 Reasons Why (13RW) debuted, scholars were quick to raise concerns that the show may encourage suicide as an option, particularly for vulnerable audience members; nonetheless, others pushed back, noting that the evidence used to draw a link between exposure to media and actual suicide risk suffers from methodological weaknesses and that censoring mental health topics may do more harm than good. The problem highlighted by the debate is that researchers generally lack the kinds of studies that would truly help us understand if a show like 13RW is problematic, an

Gender and Media Representations: A Review of the Literature on Gender Stereotypes, Objectification and Sexualization.

Media representations play an important role in producing sociocultural pressures. Despite social and legal progress in civil rights, restrictive gender-based representations appear to be still very pervasive in some contexts. The article explores scientific research on the relationship between media representations and gender stereotypes, objectification and sexualization, focusing on their presence in the cultural context. Results show how stereotyping, objectifying and sexualizing representations appear to be still very common across a number of contexts. Exposure to stereotyping representa

Risk Communication and Ebola-Specific Knowledge and Behavior during 2014-2015 Outbreak, Sierra Leone.

We assessed the effect of information sources on Ebola-specific knowledge and behavior during the 2014-2015 Ebola virus disease outbreak in Sierra Leone. We pooled data from 4 population-based knowledge, attitude, and practice surveys (August, October, and December 2014 and July 2015), with a total of 10,604 respondents. We created composite variables for exposures (information sources: electronic, print, new media, government, community) and outcomes (knowledge and misconceptions, protective and risk behavior) and tested associations by using logistic regression within multilevel modeling. Does true crime increase negative affect, or negative affect lead to true crime? A cross-lagged analysis on the dynamics of consuming frightening media.

BACKGROUND: Even in today's high-choice media landscape, people are drawn to stories of crime and murder, best exemplified by the massive appeal of the true crime genre. Research on negative effects of violent media on consumers has yielded highly contested results though, with traditional models often predicting negative impacts that are absent in other empirical studies. Newer avenues in horror research even suggest that frightening media may act as training grounds for coping with anxiety. METHODS: We investigated both perspectives in a two-week daily diary study on positive and negative a

Pediococcus acidilactici LAB4 and Lactobacillus plantarum LAB12 assimilate cholesterol and modulate ABCA1, CD36, NPC1L1 and SCARB1 in vitro.

There is growing interest in the use of probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for prevention of hypercholesterolaemia. This study assessed the cholesterol lowering ability of Pediococcus acidilactici LAB4 and Lactobacillus plantarum LAB12 in growth media. Both LAB yielded >98% (39.2 μg/ml) cholesterol lowering in growth media. Nile Red staining indicated direct assimilation of cholesterol by the LAB. The LAB were then explored for their prophylactic (pre-treatment of HT29 cells with LAB prior to cholesterol exposure) and biotherapeutic (treatment of HT29 cells with LAB after exposure to cholest

Active and passive exposure to e-cigarette-related content online and patterns of tobacco use among U.S. adolescents: A multigroup latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Most studies have examined exposure to e-cigarette-related content on social media without distinguishing between passive exposure and active engagement or considering broader patterns of tobacco and nicotine use. Distinguishing these forms of exposure allows clearer interpretation of whether associations reflect platform-driven content delivery or user interaction. This study identified the latent classes of tobacco and nicotine product use among U.S. adolescents (2021-2023) and examined the associations between passive and active exposure to e-cigarette content on social media an

Perceived Credibility of Social Media Narratives About GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Acceptance of Integrated Obesity Care: Implications for Nutrition and Lifestyle Support.

Background/Objectives: GLP-1 receptor agonists are an established component of obesity treatment that should complement nutritional and lifestyle interventions. Social media narratives may shape public understanding and acceptance of these therapies. This study examined whether exposure to GLP-1-related narratives and their perceived credibility were associated with perceptions of obesity pharmacotherapy. Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional online survey was conducted among Polish-speaking adults aged ≥ 18 years who used social media at least weekly and reported exposure to GLP-1-related con

Peroxynitrite upregulates angiogenic factors VEGF-A, BFGF, and HIF-1α in human corneal limbal epithelial cells.

PURPOSE: Corneal neovascularization (NV) is a sight-threatening condition often associated with infection, inflammation, prolonged contact lens use, corneal burns, and acute corneal graft rejection. Macrophages recruited to the cornea release nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide anion (O2(-)), which react together to form the highly toxic molecule peroxynitrite (ONOO(-)). The role of ONOO(-) in upregulating multiple angiogenic factors in cultured human corneal limbal epithelial (HCLE) cells was investigated. METHODS: Human corneal limbal epithelial cells were incubated with 500 μM of ONOO(-) dono

Debate: Social media in children and young people - time for a ban? Weighing up the implications and limitations of age-based social media restrictions.

Recent legislation in Australia banning social media accounts for children under 16, alongside similar proposals worldwide, has ignited debate about whether age-based restrictions are an effective way to protect young people's mental health. While the intent of such bans is to reduce exposure to harmful content, their feasibility and effectiveness remain unclear. Enforcement requires robust age verification, often relying on sensitive data such as government-issued identification or facial scans, which raises privacy concerns and can be circumvented through the use of VPNs. Moreover, social me

Elimination of stress factors by continuous embryo culture and its influence on in vitro fertilization outcomes.

Recently, infertility has become one of the most important endemic conditions, affecting approximately 15-20 % of couples worldwide. Among others, the careerist lifestyle, the increasing maternal age and the parallel increment in the aneuploidy rate of embryos play a crucial role in this phenomenon. In this study, embryological parameters and pregnancy outcomes were investigated in IVF cycles using either sequential embryo culture or a single step culture system. By sequential media, oocytes/embryos are needlessly exposed to the potentially negative effects of light exposure, temperature decre

The Role of Depression in Posting About Suicide on Social Media: An Exploratory Case Control Study of Adolescents and Young Adults.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this exploratory study was to test the association between moderate to severe depression symptoms and social media posts about suicide or suicidal ideation (S/SI) among adolescent and young adult (AYA) alcohol users. METHODS: Participants were AYAs aged 18-25 years who used alcohol. The Patient Health Questionnaire 8 assessed depression symptoms. Participants' Facebook, X, and Instagram profiles were evaluated for 6 months. Cases who posted an S/SI reference were randomly matched to three controls who did not post about S/SI. The relationship between depression symptom

Social media addiction, self-concept clarity, and social media fatigue: a two-wave longitudinal study.

Although social media addiction has been linked to numerous negative psychological outcomes, the self-level processes underlying the connection between this addiction and psychological burnout have not been sufficiently elucidated. This study examined whether self-concept clarity plays a mediating role in the longitudinal relationship between social media addiction and social media fatigue in a sample of Turkish adults. Conducted using a two-wave cross-lagged panel design, the study collected data from 344 adults (Mage = 34.06, SD = 8.81; 68% female) at two different measurement points three m

Adult attachment and problematic social media use: a daily measure study.

Attachment theory provides a valuable framework for understanding individual vulnerability to problematic social media use (PSMU). Previous research has found consistent evidence that PSMU is associated with increased attachment anxiety, whereas the role of attachment avoidance remains unclear. Most studies have relied on cross-sectional designs and measures that may fail to distinguish intensive from maladaptive engagement with social media. In this study, we adopted a daily diary approach in a community sample of adults (N = 89; 77.5% female; mean age = 23.64 ± 5.92 years, range = 20-50) to

Problematic social media use and eating behaviors in adolescence: gender-based differences.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a key period for shaping eating behaviors. Social media, central to identity formation and peer interaction, may influence diet through appearance-related mechanisms, with possible gender differences. This study investigated associations between social media use, addiction, and disorder with eating behaviors among Turkish adolescents, focusing on the mediating role of appearance-related social media consciousness. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 487 high school students aged 14-18 years in Manavgat, Antalya, Türkiye. Measures included the Social

Digital Affective Resilience: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study of Anxiety-Related Chinese Social Media.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders, including phobias, are a growing public health concern, profoundly affecting quality of life. While existing research utilizes text-based and physiological data for detection, a multimodal, ecologically valid understanding of how anxiety is expressed and regulated in natural social contexts remains limited. Social media offers a unique setting for studying spontaneous emotional disclosure and collective coping mechanisms. METHODS: A text-mining study was conducted on 28,349 social media comments related to phobia/anxiety from three Chinese platforms (XiaoHongShu
