Thirty Holstein cows in early and midlactation were fed one of five TMR for 12 wk in which soyhulls replaced 25 or 42% of the forage (alfalfa:corn silages, 1:1, wt/wt, dry basis). Within each amount of soyhull replacement, 33% of the silage was replaced with coarsely chopped alfalfa hay. All diets were isocaloric compared with the control diet, which contained 60% silage and no soyhulls. The high amounts of soyhulls fed with coarsely chopped hay improved DMI, and NDF intake and milk yield by 14, 33, and 9%, respectively, compared with the control diet. Addition of soyhulls at low or high amoun

The comparative effects of alfalfa hay (AH, Medicago sativa L.) and winter-triticale hay (TH, × Triticosecale L.), which require less water, supplemented with pomegranate pulp extract (PPE), on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, growth performance, ruminal fermentation variables, estimated microbial-N synthesis (EMNS), blood biochemistry, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of dairy calves were evaluated. Forty-eight Holstein female calves (initial BW of 37.1 ± 2.6 kg) were randomly assigned to 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The diets consisted of: (1) solid feed containing 12% A…

Helium, previously described as "biologically inert", displays great medicinal potential in a number of respiratory ailments via influencing redox signaling. However, whether or how this gas functions in plant biology is still elusive. Here, hydroponic and pot experiments showed that mimicking the responses achieved by nitric oxide (NO)-releasing compound, exogenous helium supply with helium-enriched solution or its fumigation significantly prevented NaCl-induced growth inhibition of alfalfa seedlings. Lower level of Na+/K+ ratio in both root and shoot parts caused by lower efflux of net K+ an

Root rot is a common disease, that severely affects the yield and quality of alfalfa. Biocontrol is widely used to control plant diseases caused by pathogenic fungi, however, biocontrol strains for alfalfa root rot are very limited. In this study, a Bacillus subtilis CG-6 strain with a significant biocontrol effect on alfalfa root rot was isolated. CG-6 secretes antibacterial enzymes and siderophore, phosphate solubilization and indoleacetic acid (IAA). The inhibition rate of strain CG-6 against Fusarium oxysporum was 87.33%, and it showed broad-spectrum antifungal activity. Inoculation with C

Alfalfa was the forage in the control diet. Other diets contained Sericea lespedeza as the forage, with 1.25% DM of quebracho extract included in the concentrate fraction for a dietary condensed tannin level of 8.4%. In equines, Cr2O3 is widely accepted as an indigestible marker, but there are health concerns regarding the carcinogenic properties of Cr2O3. Recently, TiO2 has been suggested to be an alternative digestibility marker in equines. However, a comparison between Cr2O3 and TiO2 has not been made in equines. Six Welsh pony geldings (initial BW: 254±3 kg; 7 years of age) fed chopped alfalfa hay were used to evaluate the use of TiO2 (Ti) and Cr2O3 (Cr) as markers for calculating apparent digestibility and to investigate the effect of frequency of marker administration on the measurement of digestibil

Normally innocuous forages are sporadically associated with hepatogenous photosensitization outbreaks at certain times of the year or when grown and harvested during unusual environmental conditions, such as periods of excessive rainfall. Allegations of livestock illness following consumption of such moldy hays are associated with clinical syndromes uncharacteristic of known forage-related diseases, suggesting that unidentified toxin(s) may be responsible. This study was instigated by field observations of hepatogenous photosensitization in cattle fed alfalfa-grass forage. To document the toxi

Three ruminally fistulated dairy cows in early lactation were used in a 3 x 3 Latin square design with 3-wk periods to investigate the effects of alteration of ruminal mat consistency on ruminal function and soybean hull rate of passage. The control diet consisted of 60% forage (alfalfa:corn silages, 1:1, dry basis) and no soybean hulls. Replacement of 40% of the silage mixture with soybean hulls decreased ruminal mat consistency by 57% at 6 h postfeeding and reduced rumination activity 52%, ruminal pH 6%, and acetate:propionate ratio observed over 24 h by 10% compared with the control diet. The aim of the study was to compare the in vivo anthelmintic activity of sainfoin hay (Onobrychis viciifolia) and carob pod meal (Ceratonia siliqua) against gastrointestinal nematodes. Seven days before infection, 64 naive lambs were assigned to four different groups: Group S received sainfoin hay and group CAR was fed with carob pods. The remaining lambs received lucerne hay (Medicago sativa) and were assigned to positive (non-treated, NT) and negative (treated, T) control groups (treatment with albendazole). On day 0, lambs were artificially trickle infected for 6 weeks, with a mixture of in…

Meat rabbits are ideal meat-producing animals. However, weaning-induced intestinal inflammation often leads to growth delays, and severe cases impair breeding efficiency. Alfalfa polysaccharides (APSs) have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making them potential natural alternatives to antibiotics. To date, relatively limited research has been conducted on APS in meat rabbits. This research investigated the effects of APS on growth performance, intestinal inflammation, and meat quality in rabbits. Eighty healthy rabbits were randomized into four treatment groups, each group consist

Dietary supplementation of alfalfa hay or calf starter during the preweaning period was beneficial to the gastrointestinal development in dairy calves and lambs. In the present study, we designed 2 experiments using weaning with calf starter and alfalfa hay to investigate the diet-ruminal microbiome-host crosstalk in yak calves by analyzing the ruminal microbiota and rumen epithelial transcriptome. During the preweaning period, supplementation with either alfalfa hay or the starter significantly promoted animal growth and organ development in yak calves, including increases in body weight, bod

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a fermentation by-product on rumen function, microbial yield, and composition and flows of nutrients from the rumen in high-producing lactating dairy cattle. Eight ruminally cannulated multiparous Holstein cows averaging (mean ± standard deviation) 60 ± 10 d in milk and 637 ± 38 kg of body weight were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment sequences in a switchback design. Treatment diets contained (dry matter basis) 44% corn silage, 13% alfalfa silage, 12% ground corn, and 31% protein premix, containing either a control mix of urea and

Fumigant residues in hay were "extracted" by microwave irradiation. Hay, in gastight glass flasks, was placed in a domestic microwave oven, and fumigants were released into the headspace by microwave irradiation. Power settings for maximum release of fumigants were determined for carbonyl sulfide (COS), carbon disulfide (CS(2)), cyanogen (C(2)N(2)), ethyl formate (EF), methyl bromide (CH(3)Br), sulfuryl fluoride (SF), propylene oxide (PPO), and phosphine (PH(3)). Recoveries of fortified samples were >91% for COS, CS(2), CH(3)Br, SF, PPO, and PH(3) and >76% for C(2)N(2) and EF. Completeness of
