The occurrence of dietary deficiency of Vitamin B12 is reported in two young caucasian adults. In one case megaloblastic anaemia occurred and in the other optic atrophy. The importance of the dietary history, the significance of folic acid intake and the inter-relationship of Vitamin B12 and cyanide detoxication are discussed.

Vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, and adenosylcobalamin, is an essential vitamin that can be primarily obtained through the human diet. Although animal-based foods supply adequate B12 for most people, deficiency remains common in older adults, vegetarians and vegans, and in those with gastrointestinal disease or malabsorption. Deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia, neurologic symptoms, and pregnancy complications. In healthy individuals, supplementation raises serum B12 levels to a similar extent as dietary intake; however, in disease states such as megaloblasti

Normal red blood cells maturation depends on many different hematological factors, including vitamin (vit.) B12. Megaloblastic anemias are basically caused by vit. B12 deficiency. In childhood the deficiency of this vitamin is extremely rare. The article captures findings of observation of the patient with rare form congenital vit. B12 deficiency anemia - Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome. The disease is characterized with selective intestinal malabsorption of vit. B12 and permanent proteinuria, without sings of kidney disease. The diagnosis was confirmed by our team in early childhood and based on

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a well-known cause of megaloblastic anaemia and pancytopenia. However, the incidence in pregnancy is rarely reported. We present a case of a 32-year old multigravid woman who was diagnosed with megaloblastic anaemia since 22 weeks gestation and progressed to develop severe pancytopenia at 30 weeks gestation. She was also diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency related to dietary and sociocultural habits. Folate and iron levels were normal throughout pregnancy. Treatment with parenteral cyano-cobalamin resulted in sustained improvement of haematological parameters. The p

A total of 128 leprosy patients were investigated for the morphological type of anaemia, the underlying disturbances in iron metabolism and patterns of erythropoiesis and other cytomorphological changes in the bone marrow. The anaemia was a mild to moderate degree in paucibacillary (PB) leprosy, while in multibacillary (MB) leprosy it was of a severe degree. Iron deficiency was observed in only a few patients. Impaired iron utilization as observed in a anaemia of a chronic disorder was a common finding in MB leprosy (41.7%) and more so in new cases (50%). Megaloblastic erythropoiesis was also

Vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with mucocutaneous symptoms, such as glossitis and hyperpigmentation, as well as megaloblastic anemia and neuropathy. These are reversible conditions, and the symptoms improve with early detection and treatment. Whenever anemia is encountered in routine practice, vitamin B12 deficiency should be considered and the presence of skin symptoms should be investigated.

A method for the measurement of serum folic acid activity is described, which is a modification of previous methods. The material in serum with activity for L. casei is made up of a stable and a labile component. The amount of stable component in normal subjects and patients with megaloblastic anaemia is similar. The amount of labile component varies. In patients with folic acid deficiency none is present; in normal subjects it constitutes between 65 and 94% of the total serum L. casei activity. The labile component appears to be an index of folic acid metabolism, and the assay of total serum

Vitamin B12 deficiency is an uncommon cause of pyrexia. We report the case of a patient who presented with pyrexia and anaemia, which after exclusion of infective, inflammatory or endocrine causes was attributed to megaloblastic anaemia secondary to vitamin B12 deficiency. The patient's fever responded to treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency.

A 19-year-old man with documented infectious mononucleosis presented with pancytopenia and a megaloblastic bone marrow. He developed a "capillary leak syndrome" with an expanded plasma volume of 9,290 ml and normal right heart and pulmonary artery pressures. The patient had a dramatic recovery after corticosteroid therapy.

Four children presenting with a range of signs and symptoms were found to have chronic intestinal obstruction. Presentations included massive upper-gastronintestinal bleeding, chronic weight loss simulating neoplasm, andprofound megaloblastic anemia. The pathophysiology involved and a brief review of stagnant loop syndrome in childhood are discussed.

Utilizing the ability of molybdenum dioxide dichloride to form a black insoluble precipitate with tetrahydrofolate, a cytochemical test for rapid detection of tetrahydrofolate in human leukocytes was developed. The test may be useful in distinguishing deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate or both from other disorders of erythropoiesis characterized by megaloblastic erythropoiesis.

INTRODUCTION: Although vitamin B12 deficiency is a well-known cause of hematological and neuropsychiatric illness, the presentation of combined severe pancytopenia, demyelination and prominent psychiatric impairment is rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a previously healthy 55-year-old East African man with severe vitamin B12 deficiency (serum vitamin B12 22pmol/L) secondary to pernicious anemia. He had a severe hypoproliferative megaloblastic anemia with hemolysis (hemoglobin 61g/L, mean corpuscular volume 99fL, reticulocytes 0.8%, haptoglobin undetectable), leukopenia (2.7×109/L)

A 62-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C underwent interferon (IFN)-β therapy. After treatment for a period comprising 29 months and 2 weeks, hematological results showed a decrease in white blood cell, hemoglobin, and platelet counts (WBC 2,300/µl, Hb 7.2 g/dl, PLT 4.7×10(4)/µl), and IFN therapy was stopped. Despite therapy discontinuation, the pancytopenia continued to progress with elevation of LDH (LDH 4,898 IU/l), and the patient was admitted to our hospital with suspected hematological disease. The patient underwent clinical screening, and pernicious anemia caused by vitamin B12 defici

This study was purposed to investigate the cell morphological features of bone marrow and peripheral blood in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome, mainly with refractory anemia, and to compare them with other anemia diseases including chronic aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia and megaloblastic anemia. The bone marrow and peripheral blood were taken from patients for preparing the smears with Wright staining. 500 karyocytes in bone marrow and 100 karyocytes in peripheral blood were detected, and the features of morbid cells of erythrocyte, granulocyte and megakaryocytic series were observed.

Thiamin-responsive megaloblastic anemia syndrome (TRMA) is characterized by diabetes mellitus, megaloblastic anemia and sensorineural deafness. Mutations in the thiamin transporter gene SLC19A2 cause TRMA. To generate a mouse model of TRMA, we developed an Slc19a2 targeting construct using transposon-mediated mutagenesis and disrupted the gene through homologous recombination in embryonic stem cells. Erythrocytes from Slc19a2(-/-) mice lacked the high-affinity component of thiamin transport. On a thiamin-free diet, Slc19a2(-/-) mice developed diabetes mellitus with reduced insulin secretion an

All of vitamin B12 in nature is of microbial origin. Cobalamin, as vitamin B12 should correctly be termed, is a large polar molecule that must be bound to specialized transport proteins to gain entry into cells. Entry from the lumen of the intestine under physiological conditions occurs only in the ileum and only when bound to intrinsic factor. It is transported into all other cells only when bound to another transport protein, transcobalamin II. Congenital absence or defective synthesis of intrinsic factor or transcobalamin II result in megaloblastic anemia. The Immerslund-Graesbeck syndrome,
