BACKGROUND: This study was conducted within the framework of Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems theory and Erikson's Psychosocial theory. The study of age and generational differences in mental resilience could reveal which age groups are more vulnerable to stress. Generational differences in mental resilience are expected because of maturation in human development and accumulation of social experience.
METHODS: The participants were representatives of three generations - Generation Z, Generation Y, and Generation X. From 616 to 1053 participants were studied in Bulgaria with each of five sc

The majority of persons with mental distress (PWMD) in India do not have access to care, and even those who seek care are pushed to attend private providers, given the weak and largely absent public mental health services framework. The aim of this study was to examine the experiences in help-seeking and with unethical health service provision among persons with mental distress in the Saharanpur and Bijnor districts of Uttar Pradesh. In-depth interviews were conducted with twenty persons with mental distress and their caregivers. Thematic analysis yielded four key findings about help-seeking:

Animal and human research have demonstrated that events during early development influence vulnerability to physical and mental illness. In addition, the effectiveness of the coping methods used to deal with the problems of living can affect susceptibility to illness. The intervening mechanisms between stressful life experiences and illness appear to involve physiological homeostasis and immune competence.

OBJECTIVE: Growing mental health issues and workforce shortages highlight the need to train competent psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners. Limitations in clinical placements and curriculum demands hinder psychotherapy training and exposure. Educators created a simulation to boost graduate students' exposure to group therapy.
METHODS: While simulations improve psychiatric education, costs and staffing needs pose sustainability challenges. To address this, this pilot used volunteer undergraduate nursing students portraying simulated patients in place of paid standardized patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over 500,000 college students compete in the three divisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) each year. The rates of most mental health issues among collegiate student-athletes approximate the rates among non-athlete college students. In recent years, greater attention has been given to recognizing and treating the mental health concerns of student-athletes. This paper examines some of the specific mental health considerations that may arise when working with student-athletes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Using a biopsychosocial-structural framework, we were able

This article discusses the inception (in 1955) and history of the inclusion of the summary mental examination in criminal proceedings. It then reviews the procedures for diagnosing easily diagnosed cases such as frank psychosis or obvious mental normality. An overview is then provided of the manner in which the reliability of the summary examination can be maintained by deeming those cases where diagnosis can be made without the use of suggestive questions as easily "diagnosed cases" and by avoiding positively diagnosing obvious mental normality. The importance of ensuring that test proceeding

OBJECTIVE: To examine the characteristics of a sample of remands after the introduction of the 1992 Criminal Code amendments, to compare those deemed fit with those deemed unfit as the result of an institution-based evaluation of fitness, and to determine the impact of the Code changes on one's detention period by investigating the length of time that individuals were held on remand.
METHOD: File information was collected and analyzed for 180 males who were remanded for inpatient evaluations of their fitness to stand trial between October 1994 and July 1995.
RESULTS: The results indicated th

The decision of the Federal Constitutional Court permitting assisted suicide raises important questions regarding clinical and procedural standards in the care of vulnerable patients. In particular, the assessment of decision-making capacity in individuals with mental disorders presents significant challenges. This case report describes a patient with recurrent depressive disorder and histrionic personality disorder who died during day-clinic psychiatric treatment with the support of a right-to-die organization. The external psychiatric assessment was based on a single video consultation condu

A description is provided of the current situation in Aotearoa New Zealand with regard to compulsory treatment of people with schizophrenia. This is placed within the context of homelessness in New Zealand and the provision of services to the incarcerated mentally ill. There are high rates of homelessness and incarceration and services are struggling to meet their needs. This is particularly a problem for the indigenous population. The current Mental Health Act allows for compulsory treatment of people who as a result of schizophrenia are seriously impaired in their capacity to care for themse

Patients who are diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN patients) characteristically refuse to receive medical treatment, including life-saving treatment, for their illness. These refusals are generally not honored on the grounds that AN patients are incapable of making autonomous medical decisions regarding their illness. Despite being widely shared by medical and legal experts, the judgment that AN patients are incapable of medical decision-making lacks a sound theoretical basis in the existing bioethics literature. This paper aims to fill this gap in the literature by offering a novel explanat

We present the case of a 76-year-old male with mild cognitive impairment and delirium who was referred to consultation-liaison psychiatry for an assessment of capacity to choose discharge. Cases involving "dispositional capacity" are complex and increasingly frequent, with momentous consequences for patients and their families, but are rarely discussed in the literature. In this article, experts in functional assessment, cognition, and ethics provide guidance for this commonly encountered clinical scenario based on their experience and available literature. We review the content and formulatio

Playing a musical instrument can affect physical and mental health. A literature review was conducted to determine the prevalence of health problems among oboists, which medical conditions can be caused or exacerbated by playing, whether oboe playing can be a protective factor, and whether recommendations are possible as to who should or should not play the oboe. Searches in 7 databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SocIndex, PsyIndex, Psychinfo) yielded a total of 950 studies; after exclusion of duplicates and those not meeting eligibility criteria, 37 articles were sele

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), an umbrella term for neurodevelopmental conditions caused by prenatal alcohol exposure, is overrepresented in the U.S. juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. The brain damage in FASD manifests in a combination of cognitive and adaptive impairments that potentially reduce ability to function adequately during the criminal justice process, including capacity to stand trial (CST). Despite the high risk of arrest and conviction in this population, relatively little research guides CST assessment for defendants who have or may have FASD. Therefore, the

BACKGROUND: As the population ages, it is increasingly important to use effective short cognitive tests for suspected dementia. We aimed to review systematically brief cognitive tests for suspected dementia and report on their validation in different settings, to help clinicians choose rapid and appropriate tests.
METHODS: Electronic search for face-to-face sensitive and specific cognitive tests for people with suspected dementia, taking ≤ 20 minutes, providing quantitative psychometric data.
RESULTS: 22 tests fitted criteria. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Hopkins Verbal Learning

Section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended) provides police officers in the United Kingdom with the authority to remove individuals who appear to be suffering from a mental illness from any public place to a designated 'place of safety' for appropriate assessment. A considerable amount of research has been dedicated to investigate who is detained under this section and how it is implemented. A review of the literature revealed a high prevalence of schizophrenia, personality disorders and mania in individuals detained under Section 136 and an over-representation of black detainees. Seve

Mental health services in low income countries are inadequate. Health care delivery services in these countries are mainly focused on vector-borne diseases and HIV/AIDS. To make the situation worse, trained health workers are leaving developing countries for higher paying jobs elsewhere; this "brain drain" is robbing countries of their energetic and highly trained manpower. In response to this dire situation, Ethiopia started a psychiatric nursing training program where by nurses are trained and assigned to different parts of the country as mental health workers. Their activities range from pr

While the courts have final responsibility, physicians are often asked to evaluate the ability of an older individual to remain living alone in the community. A person's capacity to make this decision can be more difficult to assess than the capacity to make medical decisions. Unsafe actions alone do not restrict the choice of individuals. Inability to understand the implications of these actions may also limit this choice. Decision-making ability is not well measured by global tests of cognitive function. Deficits in executive function resulting in impaired insight, problem-solving ability, a
